It's up to us, says Tiger star

Richmond midfielder Shaun Grigg says the players will be responsible for the future of Tigers coach Damien Hardwick beyond this season.

Hardwick is out of contract at the end of the year, but Grigg says if the players can implement his plan he is set to be re-signed.

He said Hardwick's vision had already resulted in a re-invigorated side and he was certain they would improve further this season.

"If Dimma (Hardwick) keeps going the way he is and we develop his game plan and his teams that will all take care of itself," Grigg said.

"We'll play well and win games and it won't be an issue."

He said Richmond was on track for a better year after a solid pre-season boosted by a first-time training camp in Arizona.

"It was just good for the team to get away for a period of time and gel moreso than what you would here," Grigg said.

"We're a lot closer and we're a lot fitter, it was a good camp.

"We've had a good pre-season but we're sick of the training and are just ready for the games."

Grigg admitted turnovers had been costly for the Tigers last year but said all parts of their game had been addressed during the off-season.

"We've worked on every aspect of our game. We've got Ross Smith from the Hawks who has come in as a defensive coach so we've spent a lot of time with him.

"We've been going over footage and drills and game plans."

Grigg said midfielder Dustin Martin was again poised for a big season after the 20-year-old produced stellar performances in his first two years with the club.

"He's been one of the strongest trainers all season, he hasn't missed a beat and he's fit and firing," Grigg said.

"I think he'll take the competition by the scruff of the neck this year."

Martin, who was third in the club's best-and-fairest last year and a Rising Star nominee in 2010, was again likely to mix working in the midfield and the forward line.

 :o

Nice one bru.

But really, I'd be happy just to not see another dinky little handball in the back line.

Blowtorch would be more on the coaches that have walked into ready established lists such as Lyon and his replacement at the Saints, even Buckley.....
DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

Don't think so media is jumping on the  "honeymoon" period being over and fans demanding finals....no excuses I think is the catch cry  ;D

Besides those coaches you've listed are starting and have contracts - Hardwick coming out of contract is the big difference

Seriously though WP, do contracts mean anything these days???

Yes if Hardwicks contract runs out then he is gone or it's renewed....easy?

But if you are 2 years into a 4 year deal and the club wants you gone you are gone.....they just pay you out.....same as players, same as work....contracts are not worth much these days mate.

Hardwick will be ok anyway.......NO EXCUSES..... ;D

Fair point especially when talking about Ross Lyon - a contract to Ross means little

Watters will get a honeymoon period because I don't think Ross Lyon left the Saints in that good a shape

And Buckley we get left alone because Eddie will go after someone else and make them front page news to protect his mate

But you are right - Hardwick will get an extension not a case of if just a case of when and for how long  ;D

Hey WAT happy to have a hundred that Lyon and Buckley will still be at their clubs in 2013.
It's that simple Spud

Would like to see him get a 3 year contract should we reach the finals. If we don't reach the finals as a result of circumstances beyond his control, injuries etc.....I would still like to see him get a one year extension to see if the following year with a full squad (would have to be a full squad at his disposal) what he could do.

Extension only if we make finals  :huh Is that what you are saying

What if we miss out on the finals by % only - no extension? Or if we win 10 games and finish 10-11th - no extension.

I don't think it will matter - he will get a contract extension IMV it has alot more to do with than just win/losses

No, of course you would have to look at the circumstance, I want him to stay, so I will be happy if his contract is renewed.

But finish 14th or below of the new teams and things could work out differently..

Hey WAT happy to have a hundred that Lyon and Buckley will still be at their clubs in 2013.

I didn't say they wouldn't be Y&B, just said they are taking control of 1. Freo that has the players and are ripe for finals and 2. Need I say.

So for those clubs to go backwards, pressure would be on those coaches, i did nt say they would not be there.

This.

Grigg would be lucky to get a game in more than half the sides in the comp
