MICK Malthouse has labelled Richmond's game plan ''a bit disjointed'' and has urged Damien Hardwick to abandon coaching from the boundary.

Hardwick is facing a critical third year at the helm as he is out of contract and the Tigers, starved of success for so long, hope to challenge for a finals berth.

Malthouse, a three-time premiership coach, said Hardwick needed to make improvements. ''I have a bit of a soft spot for the Tigers because I played there in a premiership side. But so much is dependent on Jack Riewoldt and that young midfield being productive in the big games,'' he said.

''They will promise a lot and will have one of the best midfields in a few years. I just hope that Damien Hardwick coaches from upstairs in the box where he will have a greater view of the game.

''On the bench, he's getting a very one-dimensional view. I doubt whether his people in the box could give him every ounce of information he needs under pressure.

''I like their list, but I sometimes worry about the way they play and I think their game is a little bit disjointed at times. They have the capacity to win more games than they lose, which suggests the eight is not beyond them.''

The Tigers have refused to discuss contract renegotiations publicly. Hardwick's great friend, Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson, recently caused a stir when he urged the Tigers to act promptly for the sake of stability.

Malthouse has given his analysis of all clubs in a weekend column in The West Australian.

Just reading an article in HUN on the blues... Mick labelled them "chris judd conscious" and they relied too heavily on him etc etc. Mick also said in the same breath that collingwood will win the flag this year.

He is wrong and is just causing trouble.... Paul Roos coached a premiership team from the boundary... Our game plan is damn good... Just gotta keep improving our skills so we can keep implementing it.... Collingwood lost the granny last year Bec their boundary game plan sucks arse and the cats proves it

They are fair observations IMO, he can only speak from his perspective be it right or wrong and he is a fair judge of the game and coaching one would think....
I suspect Hardwicks boundary line perspective was more for develomental reasons than tactical but that is just my opinion, could be he feels more comfortable observing from that vantage, I would prefer a more commanding isometric view if I was moving the chess pieces around as Mick suggested.

Correct owl, hard wick himself has said he preferred the boundary early so he could give direct feedback immediately when the players came off. Beingreseason it's still development as we fine tune our structures.

Mick I'm sure knows patience is required, took him 10 years to win a flag including a rebuild halfway through, takes time... He's just paid to create a buzz now like all journos

Owl's on the money. Hardwick coaches from the  boundary to give direct feedback to the players. There were occasions last year where he coched from the box, mainly games we had a chance to win and they said yesterday he was coaching from the box.

With the empaphis changing from player development to match day results results I think we will see hardwick spend more time in the box this year.

I can understand Mick's observations, but they are not fully informed ones. Its a bit dissapointing from the supercoach messiah really. You would have expected the all seeing and all knowing football guru to have a deeper insight, perhaps he is just a very naughty boy after all

Agree with you Owl. Spot on there mate.

Saw on the telly yesterday Dimma was indeed coaching from the box.

Unfortunantely until the time as Dimma will get signed up and Mick will be writing articles in the Hun with even the smallest reference about us Dimma's future with Mick possibly replacing him will be the sub heading.

We all know well that the newspapers nowadays have a reputation of being a scavenger of human misery. Why read the trashy mags when you can read the paper.

Mick is a now media commentator, his job is to give an opinion. Which he articulates very well indeed IMHO

Compared to others in the industry I would think his opinion has greater validity than the many others.

Although I don't necessarily agree with everything he said the article in todays paper has taken bits of a very interesting article on all clubs and tried to create another "Pressure on Hardwick" article.

Just on the coaching form the boundary stuff, Dimma coached from the box yesterday, coached from the box for the last 2-3 games in 201. Yesterday we had less of our youngsters out there so he wen tthe traditional way, rounds 1 & 2 of the NAB cup we had a lot kids (new recruits) and he was on the boundary. I think we see more of the Dimma in the box in 2012
