Richmond must play finals this year

    Jon Ralph
    From: Herald Sun
    March 14, 2012

THE problem with far-reaching five-year plans is that at some stage they come back to bite you.

Terry Wallace was roundly mocked for his constant references to long-term plans at Richmond, so much so that he still jokes about it now.

But Richmond is an ambitious club, so it has set ambitious plans.

The club declared in 2010 that by 2014 it would have played finals three times (with a top four finish), have attracted 75,000 members, and be clear of debt.

Do the sums and that means Richmond must make finals every year from now to 2014.

No wiggle room, no way of backing out.

It is a bold contrast: Richmond's own plan shouts from the rooftops its definitive plans, ones that have it winning three premierships by 2020.

Yet talk to any coach or player at the club and they go out of their way not to set finals as a goal this year.

As recently as last year, when the Tigers lost eight of nine games mid-year and fell to Port Adelaide and Gold Coast, talk of finals was a pipe dream.

A quick straw poll of the Herald Sun football writers yesterday drew a consensus: Richmond are absolutely no chance to make the finals this year.

''They are kidding themselves,'' was one retort.

''We get this hype about Richmond in March every year,'' was another.

The irony, though, is that Richmond is closer to a premiership than at any time since 1983.

How close? Maybe still 3-5 years from a real crack.

That's not that close, but it's better than the past two decades.

What coach Damien Hardwick and his assistants would have witnessed in the past two weeks would have them quietly giddy with excitement.

Any side with Jack Riewoldt and Tyrone Vickery as key forwards has enough firepower in attack.

Any side with youngsters like Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin and Brett Deledio in the midfield will eventually develop into a side with enough A-grade midfield potential.

The massive holes at Richmond were in the ruck, down back and their inability to win the ball back from opponents.

Richmond looks to have addressed them all over a single pre-season.

Ivan Maric has quickly become a cult favourite at Richmond through his long locks alone.

But the spectacular flowing mullet is only an added bonus.

Richmond was often obliterated at the stoppages last year, partly through the inability of Angus Graham to compete.

Maric has won first possession, buttered up when the ball hits the ground and dropped back in front of the tall marking forwards when the opposition has the ball.

If he could maintain that rage through the home-and-away season, he would be the bargain-basement recruit of the year.

Given the Tigers gave up only pick 37, the price was certainly right at the trade table.

Down back, the addition of Steven Morris, and first-round pick Brandon Ellis, plus the return of tall defender Dylan Grimes significantly improves the defence.

Ellis is hard and tough and uses the ball exceptionally well. Morris is hard and tough and probably doesn't use it exceptionally well.

But with Grimes exhibiting the cool head, closing speed and sound marking in the pre-season that was a feature of his game last year, the defence looks immeasurably better than in 2011.

Not exceptional, but good enough to break even if the ball doesn't come in with lightning speed.

Every side can fill holes over the pre-season, but not every side changes its mindset.

At times last year Richmond let the opposition gain possession deep in defence then waltz it all the way down the field to score.

Against Fremantle early and Geelong all day the Tigers hunted in packs.

They chasing frenetically, gang-tackled repeatedly, and forced turnover after turnover.

Against Fremantle the endeavor ran out after halftime, and against Geelong the Cats had such a lack of intensity it was hard to know just what to think.

All of it is extremely positive, yet once again, it is two games in a sea of historic mediocrity for Richmond.

That type of form and commitment all year would see the Tigers push for finals and get Hardwick a contract extension in quick time.

Yet Richmond has played great football in patches before; bringing it for six months of an AFL season is another thing altogether.

Champion Data says last year Richmond was 15th in contested possessions, 16th in clearances and 17th in centre clearances.

It is hard to marry up this year's stats given that second half against Fremantle, but in the NAB Cup so far Richmond has risen from last year's 15th in tackling to this ninth so far this year.

In centre clearances they are an encouraging eighth, even if they are still 15th in clearances.

What does it all mean?

The five-year plan might be great in theory, but a side which had sunk as low as Richmond before Hardwick cannot hope to live up to those expectations.

Richmond won eight games last year.

It could improve 50 per cent, win 12 games, and yet still miss the finals in a competition with 18 teams.

The hype is building at Richmond like never before.

When that five-year plan was released the football component looked ridiculously optimistic.

Is two exceptional weeks of football enough to change perceptions?

Probably not, but there is no denying the Tigers are finally playing a brand of football that will one day take them far in September.

The article is the usual ra ra for March. I bristle whenever I read about hype for Tigers in March, it is almost always media led because they know it sells papers.

Tomorrow there will be an article about the spotlight on why Dimmas not yet re-signed  :wallywink
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

As soon as I read the thread title, I knew it was an article from Ralphy
Its written by a fan for the fans, and gives us nothing more than what we discuss.

I'm not getting carried away with preseason form, I think well be competive with those around us and below.

if we've only make two finals appearances and only signed 60,000 members by 2014 the whole club, players, coaches, admin, board, should be burnt to the ground  ::)

He forgot to mention that we were just pipped by Nort and we beat the Hawks. So overall it has been a solid effort by the Lads in all NAB games, not just the last two.

Here's some discussion from Jon Ralph's live chat ...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi guys. Jon Ralph here to talk about the Buzz.
Topics for discussion:
-Is Richmond's stated hope in its five-year plan of three finals series by 2014 wildly optimistic?
-Can they make the finals if they play as they have the past two weeks against Fremantle (first half at least) and Geelong.
-Is Maric potentially the bargain-basement recruit of the year at pick 37?
-What is wrong with Jack Watts given he was dropped today for the club's final hit-out?
-Who will win the battle of the sides vying for spots 7-14 on the ladder. It's going to be some sort of logjam this year

Comment From Justin
What do you make of the following players Ralphy - Kelvin Moore, Daniel Connors and Matt White. Three surely on there last chance.

Hi Justin, I think Richmond would like to think Moore will get back but fears he never will. He's on the long term injury list. They will hope Matt White is not in their best side given their midfield depth, and they will hope Dan Connors pulls his finger out. He is fighting with Ellis and Morris for one of those small defender roles. His left boot is super, so he has the challenge ahead of him

Comment From Toris
Benny Gale’s five year mantra was 3-0-75. That means they are three years into their mission statement to play finals three times in five years. If the Tigers do not play finals this season (and perhaps Benny was relying on the AFL introducing a final nine by now), will Benny admit defeat and resign? Or will he merely beg the dregs for more money?

No, Benny has done the right thing in thinking big. Not sure they will get to either milestone but doesn't mean they can't try. The Tigers knew they had holes in their side and they have filled them. Now it's about developing the kids into A graders and adding depth. A couple of injuries down back and they are stuffed like they were last year

Comment From Justin
Hi Craig, realise Moore has been plagued by injuries but for how long can you keep players on your list that never get out on the park?! Reckon the Tiges have other viable defensive talls in Grimes, McGuane, Astbury and Post.

Think Post has taken another step in the NAB Cup. He can still do silly things (he turned it over badly early against the Cats) but he might be able to play third tall down back. I think the Tigers would hope Astbury or Griffiths might go past him, but both have been battling with injury

Comment From Sam
How can people possibly be putting clubs like Melbourne and Essendon ahead of Richmond? The Tigers have one of the best forward lines and midfields in the league. And now they have added some real talent into the back half, and have a ruckman willing to contest the ball and win it at ground level. So can you explain why shouldn't we make the finals?

The Tigers shouldn't make the finals, because history says they are chronic underachievers. Two finals campaigns since 1982 is quite frankly an embarrassment. But as I say in the column, finally they are playing the type of football which will win them finals. I think it can be this year, but consider the sides hoping to improve and who have claims to the eighth spot - Freo, Adelaide, North, Dogs, Melbourne. And that's from sides outside the eight last year

Comment From @camtherose
Maric was just okay despite a bit of overhype in round one, but he was a significant force on the weekend. I don't want him kicking the ball in general play too often (takes an hour to get boot to ball), but if he can bring what he did on Saturday, pick 37 was okay.

Think just OK is pretty rough for Maric. He is the big body that Angus Graham is, but he actually uses his heft and bulk for good. One argument is that the new ruck rule (players have to start 3m apart) actually helps guys like him to jump into their opponents. He was right up there in contested marks at Adelaide two years ago before Sam Jacobs was preferred to him. Doesn't have to be a world-beater, just has to do what Ben Hudson used to do at the Dogs - make an impact

Comment From stephen
i would be surprised if Martin did not win a Brownlow by the time he turns 25 maybe 2 he is that good

Martin is cutting a swathe in the NAB Cup, isn't he. Think it's all about consistency for him, but loved what Jack Riewoldt said: that he went and got himself a trainer over the off-season to get fit. Last year he came back fat, but this year he hasn't missed a session, and that bodes pretty well for him buttering up every week this year

Comment From Cameron
Ralphy the one thing your article didn't look at was the draw. After a horrible first five weeks, it's one of the easiest going round. I had a look at it and thought there are 12-13 wins on offer for the tigers if they keep improving. How many do you reckon?

Realistically a ten or 11-win season would be a fabulous result for them. Just think that given they have a stated goal of making the finals, they shouldn't feel like they have to run away from that statement when they are asked about finals aspirations.
Nothing wrong with shooting for the stars. Coming off 8 wins and having turned over 20-plus players in the last two years, ten plus wins would still be excellent

Comment From Jim
Should we be worried about Deledio's hammy?

Deledio is expected back this week. If he doesn't play this week I think we should worry a bit, given he won't have played NAB Cup at all, but he's naturally fit, has put together several pre-seasons and had another really solid year last season. Think they are just being cautious with him

Comment From Sam
Give us your best SuperCoach pick from the Tiges Ralphy - Maric, Ellis, Martin, Cotchin?

I think Ellis will probably play a heap of games, and use it well. Cotchin is bloody expensive and Maric is a good bet, but not sure he's enough of a star to be your first ruckman and not cheap enough to be your bargain basement man.

Comment From One Eyed Richmond Forum  :thumbsup
Do you think we will get to 50,000 members?

Comment From @camtherose
We all love Dustin Martin, but if you compare his second year with Judd's second, he average a couple of touches more a match and kicked more goals for the year, with both polling 12 votes. Judd went up another level again in year three and won the Brownlow. No reason Martin won't rise again, and good to see Mike have him reasonably high. Get on at $67 for Charlie!!

Dusty is the kind of bloke who will just rack up Brownlow votes because of how he looks and his ability to kick goals. He just stands out. 67 bucks is great value, but the problem is clubs from outside the eight don't have Brownlow medal winners much.
Can't see how Dusty doesn't improve this year though

Comment From jacob
if we win round one do you think its likely we will play finals on a positive start ?

Yeah, they win Round 1 against Carlton then they play finals. Last year Essendon had the five first rounds from hell, but think they went 2 and a half wins from the first five, and then they rode the momentum all the way. Richmond at least had a crack against Carlton last year then fell away late. The Blues have injury issues with Warnock, Jamison, and Walker. It's not enough for Richmond to start favourite, but they will be shorter than in previous years

Comment From Jimmy
Riewoldt is a sook just like Richo and just like Richo, he will play finals once in a career.

Nah, think Riewoldt is misunderstood, as he said recently in the Herald Sun.
He did throw the toys out of the cot just fractionally in the first NAB Cup game he played, but asking him to strip all emotion from his game would be counterproductive. He plays with his heart on his sleeve and I reckon most Richmond fans would be happy with that, as long as he doesn't abuse his teammates on-field

Comment From One Eyed Richmond Forum   :thumbsup
How long will Dimma Hardwicks next contract be?

The talk is that Dimma will get a two-year deal before Round 1. But noone knows exactly when it will be announced. If they don't sign him up before then, they are crazy

Comment From Lalapaloogi
If we make the eight, how far do you think we'd go?

Can't see the Tigers winning a final.

Comment From stephen
i know its not good looking back but could you imagine having Franklin in the side at CHF we would be monties for sept cant understand why they chose a tambling over him but that was the poor recruiting team which did not mount up to much that was a wasted year 5 picks in the top 20 and only 1 worth it

Yeah, it was a bad blue. It can set a club back three years given Polo/Pattison/Meyer/Tambling aren't at the club, and Hawthorn has Buddy/Roughy/Lewis from that draft. Consider how good Buddy and Lewis were in last year's finals series.

Comment From Lalapaloogi
Seeing that Batchelor had a great first season, probably better than Conca's but at this point in time do you think Conca has surpassed Batchelor?

Conca looks like he's taken several steps given his pre-season and even just his game against Hawthorn before he was suspended.
The word from Richmond was that Batchelor wasn't as progressed, but that's the best thing about Richmond's increased depth. Batchelor and Helbig and those blokes have to win selection, not be handed it on a platter

Comment From Juzzy
I was at punt rd on Sunday for the family day. The facilities look great. There's a good buzz, the next couple years will be good, do you think deledio will resign?

Yeah, Deledio will re-sign for sure. Given what he has recently said about his future, it would be staggering to see him walk away. He's been paid exceptionally well of late, and will continue to be paid like that. So he should be. If he was restricted and could get to club of choice, maybe it would affect him.
But which top eight clubs could afford him given that under free agency provisions, the Tigers can match any offers for him

Comment From trademaker
Conca kicked a number of goals last year, less than 300k in super coach, worth it ralphy???

I just reckon the Supercoach experts out there would say that as a mid-ranger Conca isn't worth it. He might average 75 or so, but you can get a first-round pick in his first year at 100K who will average that. It's 200K that you can spend elsewhere

Comment From One Eyed Richmond Forum  :thumbsup
Dont Forget that Tambling to Adelaide has already got us 2 players + the compo pick coming up in the next draft. We have done alright out of Adelaide. I have high hopes for Todd Elton in particular at this stage.

The word out of Richmond is that Todd Elton has tricks. Great hands, took a nice mark in NAB 1. He might take five years, but the club has enough talls that he has time. He didn't go hard enough at times in his last junior year, but given the late-ish pick they used for him, definitely worth the risk
