Best ever time to put up or shut up, Tigers Mark Robinson
From: Herald Sun
March 29, 2012 IT'S happening again - the familiar roar coming from Punt Rd before Round 1.
The Tigers could end up winning this one - they've lost four of the past five Round 1 clashes - but I am a little disturbed by their self-congratulatory build-up.
Yes, there is good news: coach Damien Hardwick is re-signed, Brett Deledio is on board for five years, Tyrone Vickery for two, they beat Geelong away by 10 goals and Hawthorn in a mini-match to kick off the NAB Cup, and membership is booming.
But what have they really done to command such startling headlines in yesterday's Herald Sun?
"No Excuses" bellowed the back page. And "Tigers: Dimma is next Hafey".
Tom Hafey won four flags for the Tigers. I don't know if Hardwick has won four games on the trot.
Richmond president Gary March was being hopeful with his Hafey analogy, but Hardwick would be embarrassed to have his name connected to the Tigers great.
Hardwick has won 14 games and lost 29 for a winning percentage of 32.
Hafey won 173 (70 per cent) and lost 73.
March has overseen some pretty dark times, so hope springs eternal for him. We can cut him some slack.
"No more excuses", by the way, is a largely emotive phrase for the masses. But we've heard it all before from the Tigers.
Take 2009, when Ben Cousins mania swept Tigerland before Round 1.
"In the last couple of years we've been standing up here hoping to take the next step and now we demand that we take the next step, and there's a massive difference between the two," roared coach Terry Wallace. He was sacked 18 months later.
In 2010, and last year, they were a little more circumspect, but this yesterday from March: "We go into this first week probably in the best shape we have ever been."
Best ever!
We've hardly heard a word from Hardwick.
He knows words are nothing more than huff and puff, and that the real huff and puff will be found at the contested ball.
What will it be for the Tigers tonight? Substance and sacrifice, or another false dawn?
