Tigers won't buy into list argument
The Age/AAP
April 12, 2012 - 12:45PM

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick isn't buying into the argument about where the Tigers and Saturday's AFL opponents Melbourne are in terms of their rebuilding.

Not for the first time in recent years, the Tigers and Demons approach a crunch match with their seasons at tipping point.

Both teams are 0-2 and the doom merchants are poised to swoop on the losers of the match at the MCG.

But ahead of the match, Hardwick isn't weighing into another instalment of the three-year argument of the comparative merits of the clubs' playing lists.

"It is early in the season. Some clubs have had a harder draw than others. someone's got to play Carlton and Collingwood (Richmond's first two opponents) and unfortunately we were it," Hardwick said on Thursday.

"Ideally we'd love to be more than zero and two, but the Melbourne list versus Richmond list - done to death as far as we're concerned."

Hardwick says he's pleased with most aspects of how his team has gone about its opening two matches.

He believes the Tigers have only played 25 minutes of bad football - and it's cost them dearly.

Melbourne have been shredded by Brisbane by 41 points and West Coast by 108 to open a season plagued with off-field distractions.

Brief lapses cost Tigers

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says his team is on the right track despite losses to Carlton and Collingwood in the opening two rounds.

But he adds that the Tigers are not going to underestimate round-three opponent Melbourne despite the Demons' shocking early-season form.

Richmond lost to Carlton (44 points) and Collingwood (21) after short lapses for which they were punished.

Carlton overran the Tigers, kicking the last six goals, and Collingwood won on the back of a withering eight-minute burst in the third quarter during which it kicked five goals.

"We've played 25 minutes of bad footy over the course of the first two rounds and it's cost us dearly in both games," Hardwick said. "We've been in positions in both games where we could have grabbed our chances.

"Overall we're just not taking our chances. But we're improving as a footy club. Both sides belted us last year - by close to 70 and 100 points — so we're bridging the gap.

"We've just got to keep persevering for a four-quarter effort."

Collingwood last year defeated Richmond by 71 points in round four and Carlton won by 103 points in round 15.

Hardwick said Melbourne had played well in the first halves against the Brisbane Lions and West Coast, "then things went amiss."

The Demons ended up losing by 41 points and 108 points respectively.

"They've been a bit unlucky," Hardwick said. "They've got some areas they want to improve in, as have we, but we understand it's going to be a tough game.

"They're going better than their figures suggest."

In reviewing the Carlton and Collingwood performances, Hardwick said it was a fact of footy that matches ebbed and flowed. One team dominates for a period and then the opposition rallies.

"The funny thing about it is if you lose everyone thinks you're not playing to a certain standard.

"The reality is that the other (winning) side doesn't play the way it wants to play for certain stages, but they can sustain the way they want to play it for longer periods."

A case in point was Geelong's two-point victory over Hawthorn on Monday.

"That was an extreme example of a game of ebbs and flows. It's just a matter of the club that's got more experience and bigger bodies, which came out in favour of Geelong."

Since Hardwick took over as Richmond coach before the 2010 season, the Tigers and Melbourne have been compared as young teams coming through.

The prospect of seeing two young, exciting teams attracted 61,900 to their round-14 match at the MCG last season. Melbourne won by 27 points, but only after an out-of-their-skins tackling performance.

The Demons laid 34 tackles inside 50, way above their season average of 12.

Hardwick said the Tigers were sick of the comparisons.

"That's old news: the Melbourne list versus the Richmond list. That's been done to death, as far as we're concerned."

Melbourne recruit Mitch Clark impressed the Tigers' coaching staff by kicking five goals during the loss to West Coast.

Hardwick said Alex Rance or Dylan Grimes would get the job on Clark.

Rance last week had a career-high 34 disposals, while Grimes had 20 disposals, a high figure considering he was solely negating backman before this season.

Oh the 4 quarter efforts.....I remember them so well ::) Dimma, other sides very rarely play well for 4 quarters yet they win. Collingwood could turn around and say that they only played 8 mins of good football :banghead. Look at the players who are incapable of taking advantage when we have the run of  the ball and there you will find our Achilles heel. You know....... the turnover kings and the lazy/scared forwards - they kill us every time. God I feel for blokes like Cotch and Rance.

Demons clash no walkover: Richmond coach Damien Hardwick

    Matt Windley
    From: Herald Sun
    April 12, 2012 1:00PM

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick isn't buying in to talk that Melbourne is an easybeat ahead of the pair's clash at the MCG on Saturday.

The Demons' dismal performances in the first two rounds of the season have led many to group Mark Neeld's men in with expansion sides Greater Western Sydney and Gold Coast as "gimmie games" for opposition clubs.

But the Tigers, playing against a side it has beaten just once in their past four encounters, won't be taking Melbourne lightly.

"It's a big game for us, obviously both clubs are 0-2 and we both want to come out with a win,'' Hardwick said.

"Every week there's an enormous build-up to a game and this is no different. We've got an expectation that we want to win and Melbourne are no different.

"We obviously put a lot of research in to the opposition and Melbourne, if you had have looked at their first halves against two good sides, they're actually playing some OK footy.

"They've got some areas they need to improve, as we have, but we understand it's going to be a tough game.''

Hardwick said he did not have to shield his players from external talk that all they had to do to win this weekend was simply turn up.

"I think most players are now pretty much aware of what is required to be done on a weekly basis,'' he said.

"Our players focus on the task at hand, we just worry about the process, how we play, what we've got to control and the style game that Melbourne want to play and how we combat that.

"Our guys are really focussed and we hope to show that on the weekend by playing some decent football and get the required four points.''

What's amazing is the media don't ask hard questions at press conferences
In return the club"feed" certain media inside info and scoops during the year.
Why wouldn't the media ask the hard questions then ???

Not to that extent but yeah, I know what you mean.

Like when seasoned players poo themselves in defence and theres a turnover and goal.
