This season, however, the Tigers are 2-1 and coming off the bye.
And they are more determined than ever to beat Frankston this week and go 3-1.
It's a massive game for a club, whose aim last year was to stay off the bottom of the ladder.
But there's a vastly different mindset now, finals football is now the benchmark.
While being aligned with AFL club Richmond, Coburg has developed young quality talent in their regular VFL line-up with Willie Wheeler, Rhett Jordan and Ben Clifton instantly coming to mind.
Taking out the local derby against arch rival Northern Blues in Round 1 was the first step in the right direction for the Tigers.
Holding the upper hand throughout the match helped save the day for the Tigers as the Blues attempted to finish strongly and more importantly with a win.
A sudden loss to Casey Scorpions by just six points hurt the club but promising signs stemmed from the match with Captain Nick Carnell slotting three.
The Tigers turned it all around the following week when they played Sandringham on Easter Sunday.
Mindful of Sandingham's ability to turn a game on it's heads, Coburg held its nerve and managed to make Potter an extremely happy coach.
After the third-round encounter, Potter addressed his players ensuring they realised the importance of their game against Frankston.
Treating the match as a mini-final, you can expect the Tigers to come out roaring and any Richmond listed players named will be warned not to take the game lightly.
If the Tigers can pull off a win at Frankston Oval next week, it will not only setup a ripper round six match against Box Hill, but they'll be one step closer to securing a finals spot.
