2008 Draft revisited
« on: April 19, 2012, 03:35:39 AM »
Good to see the media finally bag another club (Melbourne) over its recruiting and draft choices (in 2008) rather than regurgitate the same old out-dated garbage about ours from long long ago.

Mind you our 2008 drafting wasn't that flash either:  :-\

ND
8. Tyrone Vickery
26. Jayden Post
42. Traded for Port's Adam Thomson
58. Tom Hislop (delisted by Essendon)

PSD
6. Ben Cousins
RD
8. Robin Nahas
24. David Gourdis (re-drafted by us)
39. Andrew Browne
53. Alroy Gilligan

Pretty average draft all round

Could of had Zac Clarke (37) or Hanneberry (30) instead of Post, Rory Sloane (44) instead of Thomson, and Tom Rockcliff (PSD 5) instead of Hislop  :wallywink
Bruest (RD 47), Broughton (RD 74) & Suckling (RD 81) all available Rookie Draft at all our picks after Gourdis  :wallywink

Can we get Matt Rendell yet?  ::)

Would have increased our chances of landing one of those players if we hadn't taken Ben Cousins which was a ridiculous decision at the time.
We picked up Grimes in the PSD a year later and look how he's turned out.
Take Nahas in the PSD instead of Cuz and you might land a Bruest or Suckling in the rookie draft.

No you are wrong.
Cousins had ZERO effect on landing any of those players. He was the last pick in the PSD and we then picked Nahas, Gourdis, Browne, & PASS in the Rookie Draft.
Re-drafting Gourdis, picking up the Dinosaur Pear, and skipping our last pick were the ridiculous decisions at the time.

Disagree. Passing on the last pick was the next dumb decision.

Magic, all of those players were available at after our second Rookie pick. Cousins had no impact on us not picking them.

all well and good in hindsight.
were any those names mentioned at the time?
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

And the relevance is what?

Recruiters are full time employees of the club whose job is to get the best players to the club.
The only way to judge their ability is to compare players after some years in the AFL system ie in hindsight.
Our Recruitment Manager himself, Francis Jackson, stated in an interview with Richo that recruiting should be judged NOT at the time of drafting but after some years.
I would suggest that is a fair way to judge.
You seem to think that the only criticism allowed should be from someone who picked the players at the time AND has proven to be correct years later.
So do you disagree with Jackson that recruiting should be judged after a number of years?

rookie draft is a lottery.

players taken at at 47, 74 and 81 in the rookie draft have been passed over by every club, what about 6-8 times each? even the clubs that selected them preferred others.

what is the overall success rate of the rookie draft and how do we stack up to that in the last couple of years?

This is a fair point but you'd have to concede that Freo and the Hawks seem to manage the later draft picks and rookies better than most.
It's that simple Spud

Well fair enough then. Since it's a "lottery" we should just rely on luck and forget any process of evaluation.
Comparisons of Rookie picks over the last years will be misleading since they are "project" players who need more development time than National Draft picks.
I can't be bothered doing a comparison of every club's rookie picks over the last couple of years but these are some I've looked at before.

2007       PSD1   Gourdis            R8   Collard   R17  Sylvester      R33  Cartledge    R47 Howat
               PSD3   Martin               R2   Joseph    R19  Wonaeamirri   R34  Ellard           R57  Mumford
               PSD7   McGinnity                               R25  Petrenko        R35  Spencer
               PSD8   Bellchambers                          R30  Garlett           R38  Hanley
                                                                       R32  Laidler            R40  Curnow

2008   58  Hislop
          PSD6  Rockliff
          PSD7  Cousins

         R8  Nahas     R24  Gourdis         R39  Browne   R53  Gilligan
         R19  DeBoer   R25  L Delaney       R40  Speight     R74  Broughton
                              R27  Blair               R47  Breust      R81  Suckling
                              R29  Simpkins
                              R30  Picken

2009   PSD2  Grimes        R7  Hicks                  R23  Contin      R38  Roberts   R51  Westhoff   R62  Polak
   PSD7  Hardingham          R8  Barlow                 R24  Silvagni     R43  Crameri     R56  White
                                        R9  Daw                    R27  Strijk         R46  Jaensch
                                        R12  Hitchcock           R30  Howlett
                                        R17  Thompson

and that's the last time I'll try and do a transfer of an Excel spreadsheet to here, so that's a win for you, Al.

The worst part of the 2008 draft for us was that Craig Cameron (first year at Punt Rd) and co. only went with three live picks and used just two of them on kids (Vickery and Post). We were still trying to have a bet each way as far as rebuilding and topping up in a invain attempt to play finals and in the end did neither. The Thomson trade was a shocker before it was even done. Even ignoring the fact he wasn't AFL standard, Port were going to delist him anyway. Hislop just added to the pain. Thankfully it would be the last National draft of us not valuing mid-range draft picks highly and not playing the numbers game.
