Q. Asked about having more inside 50s yet losing. Is it more about leaking easy goals on the rebound?Dimma: Leaking easy goals on the rebound means there's been an overall structural breakdown. A combination of poor kicks to top of the 50 arc which Dimma calls the "trampoline zone", mistackles as opposition tries to break out, and losing critical contests with the opposition's exit kick which allows the ball over the back.
Q. Why do we kick to the pockets where the conversation rate is 20% when shots in front could end up in us kicking 15.6?Dimma: We did go to the pockets but Melbourne defend the arc very well and the only space is in the pockets.
However, we kicked on Friday night:
3.8 from the corridor which went a long way to costing us the game.
1.10 from between 30-50m out.
3.6 from set shots.
Bad kicking leads to bad footy and it's been a coming theme for us this year. If you don't take your chances early, you fail to put scoreboard pressure on the opposition and it comes backs to bite you. Showed gettable misses by Griffo x3, Lloyd, Jack and Cotch. Jack's around the corner technique has been scrutinised but he has 80 shots at week at training do it and normally goes at 80-90%. We're normally good with our goalkicking rated #3 in the AFL in 2014. So we'll work to get it right again.
* We sit 2-2 and 9th which is not where we want to be. We wanted to be 3-1 or 4-0 after the first block of 4 games. However, we remain positive starting with Geelong this weekend.
