Newy was very solid today but I want to see this against better opposition.

From the AFL website...

Hardwick admitted Sunday's game was "ugly", but maintained it was an encouraging performance from the Tigers after two consecutive 10-point losses.

"I've said previously our performance up to this stage was OK, without quite getting the four points, but to come over here and beat Port on their home deck by 37 points; it's not easy travelling," he said.

"It's certainly a win we'll take stock of and move on."

After taking a 41-point lead into half-time, Richmond were outscored by the Power in the third term and the deficit was reduced to 24 by the final change. But the Tigers held firm and managed a four-goals-to-two final quarter to seal the win.

Hardwick said Richmond's on-field leaders stood up to Port's comeback, especially skipper Chris Newman.

"It's quite easy for the coach to get up there and talk through things, but Chris has got, and his leaders in general, have got this hunger to succeed," Hardwick said.

"They've been down for a long time and Chris has been part of that.

"We want bigger and better things and I think they're now beginning to understand that the honourable losses are now no more."

Newman looked to have injured his shin in a marking contest in the second quarter on Sunday, but it was ruckman Tyrone Vickery who was eventually subbed out of the game with a corked buttock.

Hardwick was optimistic though that both would be fit to face the Swans next weekend.

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says his leaders have the hunger to succeed

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick praised the hunger of his long-suffering leaders after the Tigers maintained their rage with a 37-point win against Port Adelaide.

Hardwick said "honourable losses" were no longer acceptable and conceded he had an easy job motivating his players after close shaves against Geelong and West Coast.

"I think (captain) Chris Newman has really driven that," Hardwick said last night.

"It's quite easy for the coach to get up there and talk through things, but Chris and his leaders in general have just got this hunger to succeed."

Riewoldt leads Tigers to victory

Hardwick praised Jack Riewoldt, who kicked four goals.

"We want to win football games. We want to get the four points. Hopefully that's the start of that today," Hardwick said.

Midfielder Nathan Foley, who shut down Travis Boak in the AAMI Stadium clash, said: "We kind of feel we're on the cusp of it."

The Tigers now have a 2-4 record and are intent on getting back in the mix with a win against Sydney at the MCG on Saturday.

"It doesn't get any easier next week. We've got Sydney who will obviously be smarting after their loss to the Crows last night," Hardwick said.

"We've got a relatively good record against them, so we go in confident ... look forward to the challenge."

Port was poor, turning up the heat on coach Matthew Primus, but the Tigers were completely dominant in the second term, winning the inside 50s 19-2.

Richmond kicked 5.5 in that period, but could have easily kicked 10 goals, such was its flair and flow against a dispirited Power outfit.

"It's always hard to travel ... it's certainly a good win," Hardwick said.

"It wasn't a great game to watch probably, but they're the games we expect to win.

"We came over here expecting to win, but no doubt it was encouraging. To come over here and beat Port on their home deck by 37 points ... it's not easy travelling."

Newman received a kick to the shin/calf area, but is expected to be fine for the Swans clash.

We will need him (or a suitable replacement) against the Swans, otherwise we will hand them a big advantage in defence with Richards and Grundy.  Need to keep those two apart and one out.
