Richmond signs PNG teenager Gideon Simon as international rookie

    Al Paton

RICHMOND hopes its new 172cm rookie from Papua New Guinea will terrorise opposition defenders.

Gideon Simon was signed up today as the Tigers' first international rookie.

The small forward spent three months at Punt Rd this season on an international scholarship, and played with the Coburg reserves.

The 18-year-old showed enough to be rookie-listed for next season.

Richmond recruiting manager Matt Clarke said the club hoped to turn Simon into a "tackling machine".

"He's little but he's powerful," Clarke told the Tigers website.

"The thing that impressed us (during his stint at Punt Rd) was how well he fitted into the group.

"Our players were disappointed when he had to go back home.

"The coach (Damien Hardwick) said, 'He does everything right as a person, he does everything right on the ground. Let's give him a chance'."

Simon has been at Etihad Stadium for this week's draft camp, testing well in sprinting and agility events.

Simon, who hails from Mt Hagen, PNG's third-largest city, said he played in the midfield in the Port Moresby competition.

"Here I'm too short," he said. "They will play me in the forwards."

A little bit short?
He makes David Rodan look like Nic Nat!
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

1. How much sunlight and Seasol does his hair need?
2. Can an international rookie get a kick or do they need to get elevated like a regular vanilla rookie?

Reckon he will get games depending on his endurance which when I watched him was pretty ordinary. Will play NAB Cup though so we will at least see him without having to go to Crapburg.  :shh

Coming from PNG he ought a be used to the tough stuff too and hopefully won't be another weak kneed Irish go homer.  It'll be easier to 1. Move his folks over or 2. Have him fly home on holidays too.
