More Richmond woes with Foley doubt

A WEEK from hell around Richmond will intensify if top on-baller Nathan Foley fails to prove fit to play against struggling Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday.

Foley is reported to be nursing a heel injury.

But grave doubts surround the nippy follower and handy tagger returning against the Demons as a timely replacement for banned duo Dustin Martin and Daniel Connors after they were banished by Tigers management on Wednesday.

Connors was sacked and marched out of Punt Road while the gifted Martin was barred for two-games after they breached club training and rehabilitation rules early in the week.

Foley, 26, has not played for the past month since he gathered 20 possessions in the Tigers stirring eight-point win over St Kilda on a piping-hot Friday night stage at the MCG in Round 10 on June 1.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick and his advisors are now armed with needs to find five replacements to the side that surrendered a five-goal quarter-time lead and then lost to Adelaide by 19 points at AAMI Stadium last Saturday.

The Tigers are also without hard core on-baller Daniel Jackson, who copped a two-game suspension for whacking Crows follower Chris Knights, while disciplined defender Dylan Grimes and tough small utility Jake King are both out of contention through injury.

Grimes suffered another bad hamstring strain, while King is sidelined for at least the next month with a knee problem.

The Tigers are expected to train behind closed doors on Thursday somewhere in suburban Melbourne with the surface at home ground Punt Road being upgraded.

Foley’s immediate fate is expected to be initially revealed with team announcements on Thursday evening when the gritty 120-game defender and part-time tagger could be named and then given until Saturday to decide whether he is able to play.

The Tigers sit a precarious 11th on the league ladder with a 6-7 win-loss record and can retain a tender grip on a top eight spot with successive wins over the Demons and then Gold Coast in Cairns a week later.

It’s then a defining shootout in Round 17 at the “G” with North Melbourne who are another outfit surging toward a finish somewhere around the bottom end of the top eight.
