Chaplin courted by rival clubs Jake Niall
The Age
July 26, 2012 FOUR or five clubs, including St Kilda and Richmond, have shown interest in Port Adelaide free agent and key defender Troy Chaplin.
But Port, which has been fending off Geelong's advances on another Victorian, Travis Boak, is in discussions with Chaplin's management about a new contract and is ''pretty confident'' he will stay.
The Tigers are understood to be the strongest suitor for Chaplin, 26, who is a restricted free agent and can seek offers from other clubs which Port has the right to match.
Richmond has been in the market for a mature tall back, having shored up its ruck problem this year by acquiring Ivan Maric from the Crows. Chaplin played one season with Tigers coach Damien Hardwick - his first year at Port was Hardwick's last - while he is also well known to Richmond assistant coach and former teammate Brendon Lade and opposition and list analyst Blair Hartley, who worked for Port previously.

St Kilda, too, has registered an interest with Chaplin's management, the Saints also having a significant weakness at full-back, having lost journeyman Zac Dawson to Fremantle without finding a mature replacement. St Kilda's tight salary cap and substantial contracts have not given it much space to pursue players from rival clubs, though that situation is likely to change in the next couple of years as club greats retire.
Port Adelaide football operations manager Peter Rohde said the Power was in talks with the management of Chaplin, who is originally from Maryborough but said to have settled well in Adelaide.
''We're talking with his management, we're a fair way down the track, but like a lot of free agents, I think there's a little bit of water still to go under the bridge,'' Rohde said.
He said the club was ''pretty confident'' of retaining Chaplin, who has played 138 games, including all 16 this year.
Chaplin is seeking a new deal of at least two years, with the interest from Victorian clubs perhaps improving his bargaining position.
