Any latest news on Hyde?
« on: April 24, 2005, 10:43:09 PM »
Any latest news on how Hyde is doing? I've been trying to get some news about him on the radio but there's no footy talk. The afl.com.au article Wallace says he was conscious and had his wits about him straight after the match.

Hope he and Maguire are ok.

Concern for pair after head clash

Sportal for afl.com.au

St Kilda coach Grant Thomas and his Richmond counterpart Terry Wallace have spoken about their concern for Matt Maguire and Chris Hyde, after the two players clashed heads in a sickening contest during Sunday's twilight match at Telstra Dome.

Maguire and Hyde were taken from the ground after the final quarter incident and took no further part in the match, with St Kilda defeating Richmond by 68 points.

Thomas said it was 'very disturbing' to see both players injured in the clash.

"It was just two guys just totally committed to their club and their teammates and the footy and when you have that, sometime you have unfortunate incidents, but thankfully, I think they're both in reasonable shape," Thomas said.

"Young Hyde was totally committed irrespective of the state of the game and Matty Maguire was committed irrespective of the state of the game, which is what you want."

Wallace initially thought both players were in more trouble than later determined.

"I think that was the worst I'd seen. I actually sent someone out from our party on the bench to just go and see whether everything was alright. It has started to take time and I was seriously worried for both boys. It was a car wreck - that’s as bad as I've ever seen," Wallace said.

Wallace said Hyde was able to communicate after the game and was showing signs of memory recollection.

"I came straight back into the rooms - didn't stay on the ground at all and spoke to Chris, and he is obviously a very sick boy, but at least he had his faculty and his wits about him and he was obviously taken to hospital for observation.

"He was awake in the rooms, he was able to speak to us, he knew who I was and we were able to speak about what happened in the game, (but) obviously he's all over the place a bit, but he's OK."

Thomas said he would leave it up to the club's medical staff to decide if Maguire plays next round against Collingwood.

"If there is the slightest doubt he won't be playing and that's something I'm sure they'll wait and do the necessary testing and I know they've got testing done when they're in a normal state and they measure that up as the week progresses. If he's able to put the square block in the square hole, he should be right," Thomas said.

From what we could see on the tv, Hyde looked agitated/upset/frightened? as they were carrying him on.  It was such a sickening collision.  I was worried he could have broken his jaw.

Chris will stay in hospital until tomorrow morning where he'll have further neurologicial tests. Although he's in good spirits he's still suffering from massive headaches.

Hope he's alright.

Matt Maguire is fine and joined in the rest of the St Kilda side today.

From article: I'm right to play: Maguire
By Len Johnson and Melissa Ryan
The Age
April 26, 2005

Richmond onballer Chris Hyde remained in hospital last night with severe headaches after the sickening collision with St Kilda's Matt Maguire in last Sunday's match at Docklands, while an upbeat Maguire said yesterday he wanted to play this weekend.

Neurosurgeons recommended Hyde remain under observation to be sure he had recovered totally from the contact, described graphically by Tiger coach Terry Wallace after the game as "a car wreck". Hyde is expected to be allowed home this morning.

"They just want to make sure that everything's OK," Richmond football manager Paul Armstrong said. "Chris' mind-set is good. He is lucid. He can remember the lead-up to the game and the early parts of it, he just can't remember the collision and being taken off."

Hyde is unlikely to play in the game against Port Adelaide.
...
After the clash, Hyde tore off the neck-brace put on as a precaution before he was taken off on a stretcher, a not uncommon reaction by patients on regaining consciousness. The Tigers were given another by St Kilda medical staff.

Hyde's teammate Greg Stafford said yesterday that he saw the clash between the two "out of the corner of my eye". "It was quite sickening, not the sort of thing you go to the footy to see.

"It's a real shame because he's playing good footy and he is such an important and respected part of the team," Stafford said. "To see him go down like that, it was unfortunate."

Hyde to miss, Maguire faces tests
26 April 2005
Herald Sun

While Maguire was well enough to join teammates during a recovery session at Moorabbin yesterday, Hyde had to stay in hospital again last night for more neurological tests as an added precaution.

The pair were side by side in beds at an East Melbourne hospital after being unconscious when removed on stretchers following the incident which stopped play for five minutes.

"He was more worse for wear than I was. I was up and about and he still had the neck brace on. But he was talking OK and he sounded like he was recovering well," Maguire said yesterday.

Hyde has already been ruled out of the Tigers game against Port Adelaide at Telstra Dome on Sunday.

"He had a severe case of concussion and the neurosurgeon wanted to be extra careful and keep him in there," Richmond football director Greg Miller said.

"He's fine, but they just felt he was a bit worse than Maguire."

Concussion no reason to miss
By Melissa Ryan
The Age
April 26, 2005

Players should not have to miss a match automatically after being concussed, as was the case in the 1980s, sports medicine specialist Peter Brukner said yesterday.

Brukner said each case, including St Kilda's Matt Maguire and Richmond's Chris Hyde, had to be judged individually. If symptoms were gone and test results fine, there was no reason players could not play the next match. "It's a fully reversible injury to the brain," said Brukner, who is associate professor of sports medicine at Melbourne University . . . "that returns to normal in a variable range of time. It might be an hour, it might be a day, it might be a week.

"You can have a relatively minor knock . . . miss a couple of games, and you can do a Jimmy Bartel, where you seem to have a horrendous injury and you recover and play the following week.

"When I first started at Melbourne, there was a strict rule. If you were concussed, you missed a week . . . I remember a specific incident with Garry Lyon where he was concussed and I made him miss a week.

"The coach was peeed off and Garry was peeed off and it really made me think, 'This is stupid, he is perfectly OK and we've got this silly rule'.

"I was talking to Paul Kelly . . . and he said he had a concussion that lasted 10 weeks, he felt ordinary for 10 weeks . . . That's unusual, and I reckon 90 per cent now of concussions, they play the following week," he said.

This wasn't a relatively minor knock.  Better to be safe than sorry.

He will miss a few weeks, but the main thing is he is okay.

Richmond midfielder Chris Hyde suffered a hairline skull fracture in the sickening clash of heads on Sunday with St Kilda defender Matt Maguire, it has been revealed.

The Tigers expect the 22-year-old Hyde to be sidelined for 2-3 weeks, although he will wear a head-guard as a precautionary measure when he starts playing again.

He is expected to make a full recovery and not suffer any long-term effects from the collision.

The incident happened during the final quarter of Sunday's AFL match at Telstra Dome which the Saints won by 68 points.

Maguire was also knocked out, but he has made a quick recovery and is hopeful of playing this weekend against Collingwood.

Club doctor feared for Hyde

Doctor feared for Hyde
4:48:11 PM Tue 26 April, 2005
Jason Phelan
Sportal for afl.com.au

Richmond club doctor Greg Hickey has described the accident involving young Tigers midfielder Chris Hyde as one of the worst he had seen in his medical career.

Hickey, who was one of the first on the scene when Hyde and St Kilda's Matt Maguire were knocked unconscious after a clash of heads at Telstra Dome on Sunday, has spoken of his relief when Hyde came to on the field.

"I've seen one guy in country footy who suffered brain damage from a knock, but this is certainly the most obvious collision. " Hickey said.

"To have two guys out there having a seizure-type thing at the same time was pretty unique, and I'm sure it will stick in my memory for a long time.

"It's not a situation you enjoy being in, but it's what we're there for and we're trained pretty well and over the years you deal with that sort of thing a bit.

"It's a time to keep calm and not panic (because) if you start to panic the whole situation can go badly so you've just got to maintain your cool and do what you know you should do."

Hickey had his hands full when Hyde woke up with the dazed midfielder attempting to stand up and remove the protective neck brace which was damaged beyond repair during the ordeal.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace applauded the actions of his medical staff on the night and highlighted the need for today's players to leave injured players in the hands of the experts.

"I think our guys are getting more educated about not touching blokes who are in that sort of circumstance," Wallace said.

"Once upon a time you might have tried to help the guy up but it's just really important from a medical aspect that our medical staff deal with it.

"These guys have just got to make sure that everything is okay and that there's no neck damage or spinal damage or anything like that and I just think the players need to remain educated about the fact to let the medical people do their jobs."

Sheesh just goes to show how hard the collision was if he's ended up with a hairline fracture in his skull  :o

He is expected to make a full recovery and not suffer any long-term effects from the collision.

That's the most important thing out of this for Hyde. To make a full recovery and not have any lasting effects. All the best Chris.

As someone who's seen a child have many seizures, they're not things that are easy to look at or deal with, and you never ever get used to it.  I know what to do, but you're always waiting for something unexpected to happen.

It's great that we've got such terrific docs and staff at the club to look after the players in a crisis like this.

Tiger's skull fractured
Malcolm Conn
The Australian
April 27, 2005

YOUNG Richmond midfielder Chris Hyde suffered a hairline skull fracture in the severe head clash with St Kilda's Matt Maguire at Telstra Dome on Sunday, when both players were instantly knocked unconscious.

Hyde is expected to make a full recovery but will miss two to three weeks and has been instructed by a neurosurgeon to wear a headguard as a precaution when he does resume playing.

Club doctor Greg Hickey hoped Hyde would be jogging by the end of the week.

While Maguire hopes to complete a full training session with the Saints tomorrow and prove his fitness to play against Collingwood at the MCG on Sunday, Hyde was waiting for a specialist's clearance to be released from hospital last night.

Hickey said Hyde had suffered a 2cm fracture where the players had clashed heads, but said he expected it to heal quickly.

"He's going well, he's making progress," Hickey said. "His main discomfort at the moment is headache and pain related to some swelling outside his scalp."

Hyde recovering after collision
By Dan Oakes
The Age
April 27, 2005

Richmond's Chris Hyde could be playing within two weeks despite fracturing his skull in the nasty clash of heads with St Kilda defender Matt Maguire on Sunday.

Hyde and Maguire were knocked out cold in the final-quarter collision at Telstra Dome and rushed to the same hospital. While Maguire was cleared of serious damage and might play this weekend, scans after the game and since showed Hyde was left with a inch-long hairline crack above his right temple.

The young Richmond onballer was released from hospital last night after being kept in for observation since Sunday due to severe headaches. Tigers club doctor Greg Hickey said yesterday the pain was due to swelling outside the skull and would dissipate soon.

The neurosurgeon who examined Hyde said he was confident the Tiger could be playing in as little as two weeks, albeit sporting a helmet.

"We're working with the neurosurgeon who's been looking after him and he's optimistic that Chris will be back playing in as soon as two to three weeks," Hickey said.

"Because of the fracture, he'll probably make an appearance in a helmet to protect his skull from any severe knock - that's only because of the fracture, not because of concussion - and that's probably only going to be for a few weeks or until Chris is comfortable without it."

Hickey said a helmet might have protected Hyde from the fracture, but that it would not have stopped the concussion.

The doctor also backed St Kilda's decision to consider Maguire for Sunday's clash with Collingwood at the MCG.

In the past, it was accepted practice, following the lead of boxing, to give a concussed player a week's rest before throwing him back into the fray.

Hickey said he had seen a collision worse than Maguire's and Hyde's in a country football match but to have "two guys out there having a seizure-type thing at the same time is pretty unique".

The doctor also joked that he was waiting for Hyde to apologise for trying to fight the medical staff off when receiving treatment - a common reaction in concussion victims.

It was great to see the other night Hyde walking out of the Punt Road Oval changerooms onto the oval. Still looked a bit worse for wear but so would anyone with a hairline fracture in their skull.
