Richmond VFL defeat Carlton in practice match

By Zakariya El-Houli
Richmond Media
14 March 2025

Richmond VFL defeated Carlton by 19 points in their final practice match of the pre-season on Friday morning, 8.16 (64) to 13.5 (83).

In their third-and-final practice match of the pre-season, the VFL Tigers secured their second consecutive win, defeating arch-rival Carlton by 19 points.

The clinical Tigers converted eight goals from nine scoring shots in the first half to establish a 26 point half-time lead while the Blues were left to lament their poor accuracy in front of goal.

Liam Fawcett was strong early, kicking two goals in the opening term. The 197cm key forward finished with three goals against the Blues.

Also finishing with three goals against Carlton was Samson Ryan.

VFL senior coach Jake Batchelor said, “we knew our key forwards were probably going to be the difference for us this week.”

Samson Ryan shows off his range after a big goal in the third term.

‘Really pleased with their performance, but (also) their effort throughout the whole game,” he said.

“Really proud of their ability to accept feedback and put it into action.”

Youngster Jasper Alger was impressive against Carlton to finish with two goals on the day, as was 195cm key forward Jonty Faull, who was impressive in his first official outing in Richmond colours.

“He was great, he was crashing packs…that’s all we wanted from him,” Bachelor said of Faull.

“It (Batchelor’s message) was be a contest, it was celebrate, it was have fun, and enjoy your first game in the Richmond colours, and we’re looking forward to seeing him build from here.”

Hitting the scoreboard on the day was Tom McCarthy, Kane McAuliffe, and 199cm key forward Thomas Sims.

Featuring for the VFL Tigers for the first time in over 900 days was 213cm Category B rookie Mate Colina.

“He was great, and he’s trained that way,” Batchelor said.

“It wasn’t a big surprise that we’ve seen some good ruck work, some good contest work, and some really good clean hands as well.

“The boys around him can feel really confident and strong to know that he’s going to get the ball for us, he’s going to drive his legs and be really strong with his big limbs, so it’s an absolute asset for us.”

Richmond VFL will look ahead to their Round 1 clash with Coburg at Holm Park in Beaconsfield on Sunday, March 23 from 11:00am.

“We just need to keep connecting (until Round 1),” Batchelor said.

“We need to keep getting on the same page, we need to iron out some things in our game plan, which we’ve got great exposure to today.”

“We treated this like Round 1, we spoke about how proud we were of our boys last night, and what they achieved through raw effort and sheer determination, and we said we want to replicate that, and it’s in our control.”

Richmond VFL confirm 2025 playing list

The 34-man squad includes 16 new faces, including former North Melbourne and Coburg half-back Tom McKenzie and former Sydney VFL forward Phil Moimoi.

51. Austin Johnson
26-Dec-2001 (23 years old), 4th year in program, wing/half back, 182cm, Local club - Cheltenham (Southern FNL)
Austin has played 44 games of VFL, predominantly on a wing, and has this role down to a fine art. He’s a strong overall footballer, endurance runner and all-round athlete. His compliance in the wing position helps us win games and is a strong contest player, sharp decision maker and kicks the ball very well.

52. Mohammed Yassine
29-Aug-2003 (21 years old), 4th year in program, half forward/wing, 177cm, Local club - Pascoe Vale (Essendon District FL)
Started as a train on in his first year and has progressed over time into one of our more dangerous and impactful half forward options. Speed is his best attribute and his work rate is excellent. Good user of the ball and kicks goals.

53. Joel Garner
12-May-1999 (25 years old), 2nd year in program, half back/inside mid, 184cm, Local club - Wandin (Outer East FL)
Been super for us since joining. Works full time in our AFL program as an Indigenous Player Development Manager. Drafted to Port Adelaide from the talent pathway, so has top level experience, and is a great connector between AFL and VFL for us. He’s our enforcer - super physical and throws his weight around.

54. Tom McCarthy
12-Jul-2000 (24 years old), 2nd year in program, half back/inside mid, 189cm, Local club - Dingley (Southern FL)
Tom impressed in his first year, playing 15 games. A composed and balanced player, he has great footy smarts, clean ball handling, and deceptive speed. His leadership will be key this year.

55. Lachlan Street
25-Jun-1998 (26 years old), 7th year in program, inside mid/half back, 191cm, Local club - Frankston YCW (Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL)
It’s his 7th year in the program - his fourth as skipper. Suffered a heartbreaking ACL this year after previously being incredibly durable. Has always been a mid but moved to the backline last year and had a significant impact. He’s a big bodied utility that reads the game well and naturally finds the footy, and is a natural connector of people and relationship builder. So passionate about the club and a terrific leader.

56. Lachlan Wilson
22-Oct-1998 (26 years old), 2nd year in program, inside mid/half forward, 172cm, Local club - Heidelberg (Northern FNL)
Lachlan is a local footy star who took his VFL chance and won our Best & Fairest in his first season. He’s a tough, smart contest-to-contest midfielder with elite awareness and decision-making.

57. Mutaz El Nour
14-Aug-2001 (23 years old), 3rd year in program, hybrid defender, 192cm, Local club - Deer Park (Essendon District FL)
One of our vice-captains, Mutaz is a defensive general. He reads the game superbly, is highly competitive, and sets up play from the back. Injuries have held him back, but he remains a key player. He is also involved at the Bachar Houli Foundation as a Victorian Programs Coordinator.

58. Phillip Moimoi
18-Jun-2000 (24 years old), 2nd year in program, half forward, 181cm, Local club - Newport (Western Region FL)
Has moved back to Melbourne after 10 games in 2024 with Sydney VFL. Originally an NGA player with us, Phillip is strong, fast, and powerful with AFL-level traits.

59. Nicholas Girolami
23-Jul-2002 (24 years old), 2nd year in program, hybrid defender, 191cm, Local club - Mt Eliza (Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL)
Part of the leadership group this year. Went down with a very innocuous foot stress fracture in Round 2 that wiped him out for most of the year. He returned in time to play in the Mt Eliza flag. Those high hopes will continue with us next year with a clean bill of health. He is an athletic specimen at 191cm, but can run, is strong and has power.

60. Tom McKenzie
23-Jul-2000 (24 years old), 1st year in program, half back/wing, 184cm, Local club - Old Ivanhoe (VAFA)
A former North Melbourne draftee with 40 games of VFL experience, Tom is a strong ball user and brings speed and outside run. Excited for a fresh start with us. He is the brother of AFLW midfielder Ellie.

61. O’Neill Moncrieff
4-Feb-2002 (21 years old), 2nd year in program, inside mid/half forward, 179cm, Local club - Parkside (WRFL)
A relentless competitor with a strong work rate and contested ball-winning ability. Determined to make an impact at VFL level.

62. Nick Guiney
18-Jan-2002 (22 years old), 4th year in program, half back/wing/inside mid, 187cm, Local club - Old Xaverians (VAFA)
A versatile and athletic player, Nick has grown into a leader within the side. He offers flexibility across multiple positions and is a valuable contributor to the team.

63. Nicholas Collier
29-Apr-2004 (20 years old), 2nd year in program, half back/half forward, 176cm, Local club - Dromana (Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL)
A relentless runner with elite endurance, Nicholas was a key part of our structure last year. His fitness and work ethic make him a vital role player.

64. Jed Feneley
17-Jan-2002 (22 years old), 2nd year in program, hybrid defender, 189cm, Local club - Old Xaverians (VAFA)
A highly athletic defender with the ability to play on both tall and small forwards. His confidence and ability to impact games will be key this year.

65. Max Clohesy
12-Feb-2004 (20 years old), 2nd year in program, half back/inside mid, 180cm, Local club - Shepparton Swans (GVFL)
Returning after a year in local footy off the back of his debut season with us in 2023 where he played seven games. Max possesses speed, power, and clean ball handling. He’s determined to make his mark in the VFL.

66. Sam Flockart
31-Oct-2003 (21 years old), 1st year in program, ruck/wing/key def/key fwd, 196cm, Local club - Old Brighton (VAFA)
A highly mobile ruckman with great endurance and ball-handling skills. With the ability to play multiple positions, Sam has strong upside and flexibility.

67. Liam George
5-Oct-2005 (19 years old), 2nd year in program, half forward/wing, 182cm, Local club - Mooroolbark (Eastern FNL)
Liam had a standout debut season, showing high football IQ and versatility across multiple positions, and has been rewarded by being included in the leadership group this year.

68. Sam Toner
23-10-2005, (19 years old), 1st year in program, forward, 184cm, Local club - Narre Warren
A natural goal kicker who burst onto the scene after dominating local footy, Toner made an immediate impact in the Coates Talent League. His speed, energy, and vertical leap make him a dangerous forward option.

69. Seth Macdonald
14-09-2006 (18 years old), 1st year in program, utility, 189cm, Local club - Rowville
A rangy utility from the Eastern Ranges. He's played in a variety of positions across his two years at the Ranges, predominately on the outside. He has been at his most impactful as a dangerous forward.

70. Will Bravo
6-May-2002 (22 years old), 4th year in program, inside mid/half forward/wing, 183cm, Local club - Mt Eliza (Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL)
Will was primed for a breakout season before a serious knee injury in 2024. He brings speed, power, and strength to the contest and is eager to make his comeback.

71 .Kai Daniels
(23 years old), 1st year in program, key position, 193cm, Local club - Golden Square (Bendigo league)
An exciting key position prospect, we’re excited to have Kai join us for 2025. Returning to football last year in the Bendigo league, Daniels immediately impressed with his athleticism.

74. Harry Scott
24-Jan-2005 (19 years old), 2nd year in program, inside mid/half forward, 186cm, Local club - Old Scotch (VAFA)
Harry had a standout debut VFL season, playing eight games before a broken wrist ended his year. A strong-bodied midfielder with clean hands, great vision, and strong marking ability, he impacts both in the midfield and forward. Hard-working and is eager to develop further.

76. Sean Lai
2nd year in program, wing/half forward/half back, 183cm, Local club - Cheltenham (SFNL)
Sean is athletic with a strong upside. Hailing from Cheltenham, he is a damaging left-foot kick off half-back.

77. Massimo Raso
21-Apr-2006 (18 years old), 1st year in program, half forward, 171cm, Local club - Deer Park (WRFL)
Mass has had a strong couple of years at the Western Jets as an inside mid/half forward. He is very smart and very clean at ground level. He’s also got speed and agility and is balanced with ball in hand.

AFL ACADEMY FACES VFL TEAMS

THIS year's top draft talents will come together for two clashes against VFL opponents as part of the Mash AFL Academy's program over the next month.

The AFL Academy will play Richmond's VFL side at RSEA Park on Sunday, April 13 at 1.30pm in the first of the side's VFL clashes for this year under coach Tarkyn Lockyer.

The games have been a key part of the Academy's talent program and give the prospects an insight into matches against senior opposition while playing alongside the best talent in the country, with the matches also valuable for recruiters in assessing the players in the step up.

The likes of Levi Ashcroft, Josh Smillie, Luke Trainor and Xavier Lindsay were among the first-round picks to impress in the Academy's two games last season against Footscray's VFL and Coburg. – Callum Twomey

Would love to know who made the stupid decision to not upgrade Davidson?

He showed form in our VFL did he not?

Morris was his coach and really had a big say.
Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

Morris was his coach and really had a big say.

And which of our draftees should we not have taken to take him?

And don't say we should have taken in the mid season rookie draft last year... up to that point he had shown reasonable form against poor opposition and very poor form against decent opposition...
