Smillie only played a half

Commentators mumbled something about "his injury" but no idea if it's a new one or they were talking about his injury history..

They were too busy waffling on about the U/18 players

That was the final score.

Richmond VFL   12.7-79
Australia U18s    9.12-66

Goals: Fawcett 3, Flockart 2, Raso 2, Hayes-Brown, Wilson, Toner, Ferguson, Lai

Possies: Ferguson 23, McCarthy 22, Wilson 16, Collier 26.

Smillie had 14 possies - only played a half so that's high numbers from him.

Looked pretty bruise free but liked Duursma & Addinsal.  Plenty to like at the pointy end of the draft.

They were too busy waffling on about the U/18 players

Said that he was put on ice due to his injury, but not sure if they meant he was injured in the game, or only playing a half because of his recent injury.

Richmond VFL defeat AFL Academy

By Zakariya El-Houli

13 April 2025

Richmond VFL 4.0 8.2 11.2 12.7 (79)

AFL Academy  1.4 2.7 5.9 9.12 (66)

Goals Fawcett (3), Raso (2), Flockart (2), Hayes-Brown, Toner, Wilson, Ferguson, Yassine

----------------------------------------

Richmond VFL defeated the AFL Academy by 13 points on Sunday afternoon at RSEA Park, 12.7 (79) to 9.12 (66).

The VFL Tigers controlled the contest from the outset. Despite a spirited second-half fightback from the country’s top Under-18 talent, the Tigers’ commanding 31-point lead at half-time proved too great for the AFL Academy to overcome.

Lively speedy small forwards Massimo Raso and Mohammed Yassine hit the scoreboard once again for the Tigers, while Liam Fawcett was impressive on return from concussion protocols, finishing with three majors.

Among the VFL's brigade of new faces on Sunday afternoon, Tom Ferguson led all-comers with 23 disposals to go along with five clearances, five inside-50's and a goal.

Off the back of making his debut against Sandringham at the same venue in Round 2, 196cm hybrid footballer Sam Flockart was potent in the forward half to finish with two goals.

Tom McCarthy was strong from half-back once again for the Tigers, collecting 20 disposals, while 2024 Guinane Medallist Lachlan Wilson gathered 16 disposals, six marks and a goal from the midfield to earn the medal for best afield for his side.

VFL coach Jake Batchelor said the chance for so many fresh faces to come in and play a role today was "so important".

"That might be the only chance they get to pull on a Richmond VFL jumper for this year...everyone had a reason to play and perform really well today and learn our system," he said.

"It was a great opportunity for us to see, as a coaching and match committee, where our next players are going to come from."

Off the back of an undefeated start to the 2025 Smithy's VFL season, he said "we just want to keep playing good football".

"We want to expose as many players as possible to our system...so really pleased for the boys," Batchelor said.

Richmond VFL will look ahead to their next challenge against Frankston on Friday, April 18 at Kinetic Stadium.
