Wallace's gameplan coming together nicely

Yesterday was memorable not only for Matthew Richardson's 200th game, but also for the simple fact the Tigers conquered Port.

"We hadn't beaten Port Adelaide for seven years – for anything – not a Wizard Cup game, practice game . . . anything," Wallace said.

"We just felt if we're ever going to have an opportunity to have a go at them, this was our chance.

"It's one we've broken . . . it's one that's gone now.

"That's the sort of stuff you've got to do when you've been down a long time. You've got to break all those hoodoos."

Wallace praised his players for listening to the coaches' message and not deviating from the game plan.

"They were so prepared to listen to instructions and so prepared to stick with what we wanted to do to actually change the momentum back our way," Wallace said.

"All we did in Round 1 (against Geelong) was look at the scoreboard. I thought today we didn't look at the scoreboard at all . . . that means they're learning."

Wallace conceded the first quarter was a horror story as Warren Tredrea and Port looked likely to wreak havoc.

"They certainly didn't make the most of opportunities and when that door's left ajar there's always occasions when you'll get your turn in the sun," he said. "It is a game of momentum. In this game when the momentum changed, it stayed that way."

At the first break, Wallace asked his players to start taking risks and run through the lines, and the results were spectacular.

"We were all over the place in the first quarter," he said.

"Everything that could've gone wrong in the early stages went wrong."

I heard Terry said at quarter time something along the lines to the boys of "unless you guys are willing to take risks you will never win a footy match"  :thumbsup

Although we aren't consistently skilled enough and still do too many stupid things to be classed anywhere near the top sides, IMO Wallace's run and carry gameplan is coming along very nicely. When the whole 18 on the field follow it to the letter we look a very dangerous side.

and teh best part of his game plan i sthat flooding is not involved.

imo one reason why port got thumped is that in th eforst 40 min they flooded back so hard that they were all spent. its impossible to have 18 onballers on the ground. all their fwds ran so hard to flood early on that after half time their tanks were empty.

tw spoke about this last week, he said teams that flood as a game plan will neve rwin a premiership  because come years end , they will be burnt out, u cannot run all that hard in one game let alone a year!

Loved seeing Port flood........just loved it. Add to the fact that Williams said he will never flood and then add to the fact that every team sh1ts itself against our talls so they flood like dogs....

Expect to see Carlton do a lot of the same this week......

Love the fact that we actually have a Plan B, if Plan A isn't working.

When the tall forward line wasn't working, TW simply moved Richo out, put two talls on the bench and went small with Brown, Pettifer, Tuck, Tambling  etc and look what happened.

We have a coach and coaching panel that aren't afraid to make moves and take risks in their attempt to get the right on field combo.  :bow :bow When we were getting hammered in the First quarter, what did Wallace do? Did he tell them all to flood or to go into their shells...hell no he told them to take risks and run the lines and look at the results.  :cheers

So true bg25. Wallace outcoached Williams by a mile.

Imagine if our previous coaching staff was still in charge. They would have made us flood in the face of that early onslaught in a desperate and pointless attempt to keep the losing margin down  :scream.

It is just so refreshing to have this new attitude in the coaching staff at the moment! It makes going to the footy so much more enjoyable.

Even if the small forward setup didn't work yesterday, or if going direct thru the middle didn't pay off as handsomely as it did yesterday, it wouldn't have bothered me, because at least TW is trying something attacking or positive, and blooding likely youngsters at the same time.

Enjoying going to the footy again.

In the first quarter the players were scared.  On numerous occassions there were options in the middle but the player with the ball looked at him and decided not to go there, opting to go long and wide.  Time and time again in the first quarter they froze and just refused to go inside.  i said to my mate the players are not running to support and are scared to take a risk.  Terry spoke my mind at the quarter time huddle by telling them if you don't take risks you go nowhere.  Once we started going down the middle I knew we had them.  Tuck went crazy and everyone followed.  In one passage of play we had runners all over the place, options everywhere and Port had no answers.
Does anyone have half an idea on anything?
