They can't.  Their membership is very restricted by the Etihad stadium and the decision to only have reserved seats with memberships.  They are almost at a ceiling now.

essendon have reserve seats but our supporters raised 6 million bucks and are continuing to put in $100 a year extra on top of membership for the Tiger Fund. On top of that we also sell reserve seats. So whilst they do have an advantage our club has been able to minimise the difference via those 2 aspects.

Six million debt was a kind of one off that the fans paid.
If we have not made finals by 2016 you reckon fans will be dipping into the FTF?
We need to make it count now and make finals soon....
At the same time we Tiger fans are a hardy lot. Would like to see how the Bummers fans would react to a lean quarter of a century and how their membership and finances cope. :shh

Really amazing effort to have over 50k for a club that hasn't come off the back of finals. Even the Pies never did that. (Yes I know memberships have changed since but IDGAF  :shh)
