Some interesting Stats

Just been reading this week's Inside Football (Issue No. 1120) and they have a feature on each teams Stats so far this season (pages 22-23).

Regarding the Tigers it tells us after round 6 we are:

2nd in the competition on Contested Marks :thumbsup (Geelong is 1st and ladder leaders the Eagles are only 11th)

16th in the competition in tackles :help IMO disappointing

9th in hard ball gets improvement on 2004 when we were 11th at the same time

1st in clanger kicks :help :help - shouldn't be a great surprise when you consider our skills at times

5th in Inside 50's - massive improvement here compared to 2004 when at the same stage we were 14th.

Things are a changing  :thumbsup

Our tackling was much better against Port once we got our run on. One of the main reasons we got back in the game in the second quarter. 

Carlton are ranked 3rd in tackles yet we've won 1 1/2 games more. Could be a sign they are chasing tails more than they have the footy.

According to the Record last week (pg 23) we average 16 clangers per game as side with Krakouer and Tuck both ranked in the top 5 in the comp :-\. Compare that to 8 for the Saints. In fairness to Tucky he leads our stats in long kicks, hard-ball gets and clearances. Also as a team ranked 15th in field kicking efficiency.

We need to find better skilled players.

Half the team is suspect in their disposal, which is disgraceful.

these stats do show improvement and somewhere in th ehun was stated that knobel has been th emost effective ruckmen

what it does show also is that we can still improve heaps, which is all good, would hate to think this is the best we can do!

I think that's a fair call MT re: Carlton. The other thing is we (Tigers) seem to corralle (?sp) alot of the time rather than tackling.

One stat that they didn't put in that I wish they had (and I am not sure if this a stat that's kept) is "missed tackles". When some goes to tackle someone and they get brushed aside or the opponent just "slips" through it

That is my pet hate WP.
It's good to see Mark Graham, who goes straight at the man, rather than corralling him. I hope the other defenders learn from this, and hello to Joel Bowden if you're reading.

A pet hate of mine too  :banghead. Corralling just gives the bloke with the footy more time to spot a free teammate  ???.

If you watch your opponents hips (the only part of the body you can't fake direction - old soccer trick) then as long as you have the strength to grab them it's very hard for them to side-step you.

I sometimes wonder what impact the "flood" has had on tackling. When the flood is on there seems to be a greater inclination for teams to corrall rather than tackle. I reckon this is because the team that's flooded are busy chipping for side to side and those poseession don't hurt you so the teams think the need to tackle is not that great - who knows  :-\

Flooding is ugly and so is corralling IMO :banghead

Yes I think it is pretty clear why they are number 1 tackling team in the AFL - they chase alot of tails :rollin
