I know I said that I wouldn't be commenting further but as Al correctly stated we now know that it wasn't his Hotel balcony that he fell from and there are witnesses (no team-mates). That changes everything.

Firstly,
Condolences to Johns parents, family and friends
I was very saddened to hear this news
he was too young to lose his life and this is a terrible tradegy

Secondly,

I cant but feel peeed off about this too
Now I know people might take  some swipes at me, but idgaf
This pre season John was invited to train with us.
From what im led to believe he wanted to play with us,
we wanted him to play for us and POOrt had to take him despite
them knowing full well what we intended and probably discussed with them.
Had he not gone there who knows what wouldve happened?? may still be alive but thats the thing with life you never know whats around the corner.

Really sad news and wish it didnt happen  :(

sliding doors scenario EEA. Spot on!! However it happened and in what capacity his life was taken too short.

Ruanaidh i understood what you meant pal :thumbsup

First and foremost RIP John McCarthy God Bless his soul.

Secondly my heart goes out to the family and friends that are left behind to deal with this tragedy.

Thirdly his teammates travelling with him and the Port Adelaide Footy Club.

Fourthly in relation to EEA'S comments yes I know but if this was his destiny to die young whose to say that had he chosen the RFC ahead of Port we may have been sitting here on this site mourning the loss of one of our own players. Whatever has hapenned cannot be changed
as Daniel 161 mentioned sliding doors scenario. Who was to know do any of us know what will happen in 12 months time in our lives. Cannot blame anyone.

Rest in peace John.

Terrible thing to say

I don't think it was a terrible thing to say, it was just prefaced incorrectly.
Suicide should not be a taboo subject. Open discussion on the topic reveals things that we don't like about ourselves as humans, which I think is why some people respond so emotively to it.

Fair point.

Well said.

I just thought far too soon and a bad thing to be speculating about.

I will leave it at that now.

yep.

As someone who immediately thought the same thing, due to the speculative nature of ww media.i fully understand the statement and take more offense from the ideology of berating one for saying such.

Yeah, good point.

The idea he may have jumped definitely crossed my mind, and I'm sure plenty of others as well.

The first night of an overseas trip would be a strange situation for that to happen in though.

Alcohol related misadventure is more often than not the case in these sort of things.

I don't want to play into speculation but suicide crossed my mind too. Though last night they said he was found in the driveway, but this morning on the radio they said he fell nine meters from a service structure? Still don't know why he was at a different hotel on his own, but may have just been a misadventure after all. Maybe the truth will come out. Maybe it won't, but I don't want to disrespect any parties involved.

RIP John. Tragic that someone so young with so much to give has passed away. Last thing I remember is him playing a decent game against us with that terrible boy band haircut of his. As with all players who leave the Pies I was hoping for him to make a big impact at Port next year and make Collingwood regret their decision in delisting him but sadly this is not to be.

On another note, If you take a look at this pic, it is clear that the Flamingo has no balcony's. The coroner did mention a service structure with tall Palm trees outside it, so could he have climbed on top of the building on the right? It appears to be a multi level car park with a driveway below so access to the roof would have been pretty easy.

Being in Vegas, end of season trip, someone else's hotel, pretty early in the morning. I reckon it's more likely a "good" scenario than suicide. Obviously just speculation

That 'roof' part is 3 storeys high.

The newses on the radio were saying this morning the local police there don't believe they can find any CCTV of what exactly happened.
