TAC Cup Future Stars with Hutchie, Plough, Sheehan and Dixon did a phantom draft just now. They had Lachlan Plowman, a key defender, going to us at pick 9.

1. Lachie Whitfield (GWS)
2. Jimmy Toumpas (GC)
3. Jack Viney (Melb - F/S)
4. Brody Grundy (Melb) ...... 202cm, 100kg. Can play straight away.
5. Jonathan O'Rourke (Dogs) ..... 182cm, inside/outside mid. can play anywhere.
6. Sam Mayes (Dogs) ..... lead-up forward. good radar around goals. agile.
7. Oliver Wines (Port) ...... mature consistent performer mid.
8. Kristain Jaksch (Bris) .... mobile, strong overhead.
9. Lachlan Plowman (Rich) .... composed. injury-interrupted year.. best tall defender in draft. From the Calder Cannons.
10. Joe Daniher (Ess - F/S)
11. Tom Lee (Carl) .... clean, good below the knees, big mover in this year's draft
12. Jackson MaCrae (St K) ... mercurial, prolific
13. Nathan Hrovat (melb) .... avg. 23 disp. good on left and right. Sam Mitchell type
14. Dayle Garlett (North) .... classy left footer. Andrew Gaff type
15. Nick Vlastuin (Geel) .... stoppage star, uncompromising attack on the footy
16. Tim Membrey (Freo) ..... key forward with presence. 8 goals last week in the TAC Cup Prelims.
17. Josh Simpson (WCE)
18. James Stewart (Coll - F/S)
19. Troy Menzel (Adel)
20. Jesse Lonergan (Syd)
21. Jake Stringer (Haw)

Bulldogs second pick (#27) most likely will be a F/S Lachie Hunter (Son of Mark).

I don't see us taking a key defender at pick 9. Our key defender needs are more about the now rather than developing another young tall. That's why we are chasing Chaplin via free agency. We have Rance, Grimes, Griffiths plus possibly Astbury as young talls. Post as well if he isn't traded/delisted. We need a classy midfielder at #9. We've been linked to Vlastuin who they have going at 15 while MacRae will move into top 10 consideration after today. Menzel of course is the unknown because clubs will be cautious over his knees like his brother. If we want a young key forward at pick 9 then Membrey will also move into top 10 consideration with 12 goals combined in the PF and GF of the TAC Cup.

Exactly bj. Most recruiters don't go for pure key defenders early as it's high risk. Hurley would be the last key defender drafted in the top 10 but he was ready-made for AFL and could and can play either end of the ground well.

We need more mids and especially classier ones to boost our depth so we don't fall away in games. Add to that Tucky could retire in a year's time and there's no certainty whether Axel's boy will hold up. This year we should be boosting our midfield quality and depth via the draft and using FA/trades to fill gaps in our bookends and finding a 2nd back-up ruckman.

GWS will want more than just pick 9 for Tyson though as he's contract so he can't just walk out on them. If we can't draft a quality mid at #9 in this draft then our recruiters haven't done their job.

^ agree about recruiters mate

Plowman can play but would rather Hrovat, Macrae, Membrey or Vlastuin before him... wouldn't mind Jaksch slipping down a spot either - can play both ends well...

A fair few punters are saying they were disappointed with Jaksch's second half today so he may slip down a spot or so behind those others you've mentioned if the recruiters think likewise.

Going over this again, one name that is absent from this first round list is Kennedy.

MaCrae is a pass for me as a first round pick. Has a bad kicking action/ball drop which IMO will not stand up in the heat of AFL finals. This is only my opinion. I would look at O'Rourke, Mayes, Wines, Garlett or Vlastuin before MaCrae.

Cheers.

So him going top 15 or so like in this phantom draft would be a bit rich?

Looked up Vlastuin since a few phantoms have had him to us. I'd be happy with that. Would go with Garlett if it was a sure thing he would be Rioli mkII, but in my view we still need a couple more solid and reliable soldier types before rolling the dice.

I don't think with Chaplain coming via free agency we would go for a key defender.

Would like to see Hrovat or Vlaustin come to us. Both kids are very good at the stoppages and extract it. Very much I see it as another inside mid which could free up a Foley to use his pace and Deledio to us his use skill leaving the bounces for Tuck and Cotch and pushing Jako out of there and hopefully to Coburg.. Furthermore will give us an option of resting Dusty, Cotch, Lids and Co in the fwd line during rotations to cause extra headaches to opposition defences.

I would also like us to look at a clamping defender who plays on opposition smalls whether that be by draft trade or free agency and that can free up Morro to play an attacking taggers role in the midfield and then if picking up extra mids doesn't relegate Jako then this hopefully will. Structurally it makes us look more sound defensively whilst creating attacking options for us and problems to opposition teams as to how they would match up on us.

To sweeten the deal, why don't we do like they did in the old days, Offer Pick 9 plus A pack of Huttons Footy Franks, a quart of White Crow Sauce and to really seal it, a exclusive Tailor made suit from Strand.    ;D
