Richmond Tigers feeling the heat
Murray Wenzel
The Cairns Post

EXACTLY what the Richmond Tigers are put through in the next 10 days is a mystery to them, they just know it is going to be hot.

Forty-five players and about 30 staff arrived in Cairns yesterday ahead of a pre-season camp that will feature an Amazing Race-style journey from Gordonvale to the Daintree.

It is the first time they have chosen the Far North for this purpose, having played and lost two AFL premiership games against Gold Coast Suns in the past two seasons.

Tigers midfielder Daniel Jackson said the trip would give them a welcome change of scenery from Melbourne and a chance for the new recruits to familiarise themselves with the club.

"It's exciting; just a change of atmosphere is always a good thing. I'm not sure I won't be looking forward to the heat so much in a few days' time when we're sweating it out," he said. "We have four guys just drafted that haven't really met anyone so this trip will be invaluable for them."

The players train in a special heat chamber at their Punt Rd headquarters, but Jackson said they were still nervous about facing Mother Nature in steamy Cairns.

"There's trepidation about how we'll cope with the heat up here, but we know it's going to be gruelling and hard work so the results will be positive," he said. Richmond assistant coach Justin  Leppitsch said it was a no-brainer to tap into the heat and humidity on offer in Cairns.

"The heat component of the training is something we're looking hard into," he said.

"The club will invest heavily in that and you can't get much hotter in Australia than Cairns, I must say. If you want to experience it in this country, you have to do it here."

The team trained at Cazalys yesterday and will do so again today and on Thursday , before their mystery trip takes them from south of Cairns deep into the Daintree.

While the Tigers think they are on a good thing, Leppitsch stopped short of saying other clubs would be copying their strategy.

"Everyone has their philosophies, but people tend to copy the best teams, so once we climb the ladder again I'm sure people will analyse our methods," he said.

Their loss to the Suns last season, that came in the form of a goal after the siren to rugby league convert Karmichael Hunt, hurt their charge towards the top eight and the Tigers eventually finished in 12th spot.

A repeat of that would not sit well with the club, who have their sights set on a return to September football for the first time since 2001.

Jackson said that involved notching a win in Cairns after two failed attempts.

"It's no longer about developing. The boys are a bit older, wiser, skilful, fitter; we're ready to attack next season with everything we've got," he said.

"Certainly we've struggled to deal with the conditions and this trip will really help."

Tigers hope to feel the burn
By Sam Davis

Hot pre-season sessions burning under the Cairns sun will give the Richmond Tigers a better fitness base for next year says midfielder Nathan Foley.

The Tigers touched down in far north Queensland and enjoyed a light session on Monday, before enduring some gruelling running drills in a two hour workout at Cazaly's Stadium on Tuesday morning.

Still recovering from a partial rupture of his achilles tendon that left him sidelined for the second half of last year, Mr Foley says the squad also has a chance to get to know each other off the field.

"It's a good opportunity to have some team bonding and that sort of stuff," he says. "We had a few meetings last night ... and I'm looking forward to seeing what unfolds in the week ahead."

"Obviously we're looking to try and build a greater fitness base through training in the heat and that's been the major focus."

Cairns has been less than hospitable to the Tigers the last two seasons with the club losing winnable games against the Gold Coast Suns at Cazaly's Stadium in 2011 and 2012.

Under their current agreement with the AFL, the Tigers will play the Suns in Cairns for the last time next year.

Despite their poor record, Mr Foley says he hopes to leave Cairns on a winning note in 2013.

"At the end of the day it probably hasn't been a happy hunting ground for us up here," he says.

"The Gold Coast have stolen eight points off us in the two games. We just hope to make amends next year."

As part of the trip the club is welcoming recent draft picks Nick Vlastuin, Kamdyn McIntosh, Liam McBean and Matthew McDonough who were selected last Thursday on the Gold Coast.

Mr Foley says the quartet show promise and are being eased into training.

"It's certainly a good way to come into the club," he says. "They'll spend ten days with the whole group and by the end of the camp they'll know everyone pretty well."

"They're excited, naturally a little bit nervous and as a group we'll welcome them as well as we possibly can and try to make them feel comfortable."

Heat is on in Cairns

Wed 28 Nov, 2012

Richmond’s players will sweat through a third-consecutive day of intense training in Cairns today.

For the opening days of the pre-season camp, the Tigers have mixed football training with strength and conditioning, in hot conditions in North Queensland.

On Tuesday, the players got through almost two hours of training on Cazaly’s Stadium, before a weights session at the Sportsworld Fitness Centre.

The Roar is Back in 2013.  Become a member today.

It was a similar format for the first day of the trip, on Monday.

Richmond’s newest draftees have participated in most of the training so far, while some of last year’s fresh faces, Brandon Ellis and Matt Arnot, have impressed in running drills.
