How Greek is the RFC?

With almost 1/3rd of the Tigers membership being greek, do u think it would be good or bad that one ethnic group can have this much ownership of a membership base? Do you think RFC supporters would think it a positive if the greeks ever got to 50%+ of the total membership.

Greek supportof RFC is even extending to the greek media, NEOS KOSMOS the leading greek newspaper in Australia often gives the tigers major coverage. Only this week, the tigers got a full page spread for our magnificent triumph over the forces of evil. Should the tigers seek dollars from the greek corporate community- but to do this theyd have to put on some greek events, Should the tigers administration go down this path or will it lead us to becoming an ethnic club similar to soccer. seems a high figure, thought greeks were morre into the skunks, i know heaps and heaps of italians as myself taht are tiger fans which is also odd as most italians follow the bllues! except 4 us imtelligent ones of course

In any case I can't see any AFL club getting to the stage where one ethnic group dominates the membership. We are too diverse. At worse Vic clubs where formed along religious and social lines but never ethnic lines. Dees were the "ruling" class, Bombers were middle-class protestant and Pies were working class Catholic. The Tiges were obviously working class in origin. But thankfully none of that crap became embeded into Aussie rules culture and every club have supporters all walks of life. That's why we can sit alongside oppositions supporters without it turning into a battleground.

Iv'e been going Richmond games for nigh on 25 years and haven't really noticed this I think it may be some sort of falacy .

Having said that my 2 best mates who are just as nutty about Richmond as I are of Greek and Macedonian extraction. But really aussie wogs and dont give a crap about that home grown stuff some of em carry on about.

Went to the soccer at Bob Jane and a mate tld me to call out Vasily (or something like that) and half the crowd turns around. Quite funny. May have to try it at the footy, but pretty sure you would get no reaction.

Reminds me of a funny story - My mate of Greek heritage and I were in the TAB at Princess Park one day - Full of mainly Carlton supporters - He had backed a horse called Ore De Dino - it loses and at the top of his vice yells out F wog C - I thought we were going to get killed that day.

pmsl....i know that several years ago it was quoted in a paper that it was 1/3rd it hadnt really crossed my mind until Richos 200 when we didnt show coz it was orthodox easter. anyways...if its a fallacy its good coz when foreign language newspapers give concentration to AFL and to us predominantly its a good thing. Especially to show sponsors who may be unaware that they can get publicity in foreign press and media!

How Greek is the RFC ? It has been very Greek over recent years - we were bending over frequently and getting done from behind.

In the 40's it was said that the names in the selected team had to be sent over to St Ignatious for verifacation before publication. Clubs ( South melb, Geelong, Collingwood are some that come to mind) along with Richmond were under a strong Catholic influence but this appeared to change with the death of Archbishop Dr Mannix and the further liberalisation of church thinking throughout the populace.

thats actually true...traditionally RFC was a very catholic orientated club however I believe the mass migration of Greeks during the 50's and the 60's gave RFC a new supporter group. The 2nd and 3rd generations of those Greek Migrants continue to support the tigers even though most of us left the area. One thing that RFC was never given much credit for was helping assymilate migrants, remember when we were kids Richmond as a suburb wasnt flash, the only thing we had was a really successful side....My parents always remember one day in the mid 60's a couple of old Richmond players actually knocked on the door of there house welcoming them to the suburb. They never forgot that- my old man followed the tigers from that day. Working class Yellow and Black!
