Rookie List Rules
« on: November 06, 2012, 11:03:54 AM »
Are there any limitations on the number of mature age players that can be rookie listed? If so, what is the limit and what defines mature age now?

What about international rookies? Any limits? Do they reduce the number of normal rookies you can have?

Any other constraints?

Your list can go 40 main + 4 rookies, 39 + 5 or 38 + 6. Pretty sure that's the clubs discretion rather than based on the number of vets as previous. ie. we still have 6 list spots if we so choose or we can save some for next year if we dont want to.

Used to be a limit of 2 mature age over 23 rookies. Not sure if that has changed. We will only have 3 or 4 rookie spots so we can still fill them up with guys that are 22 & under.

6 International rookies. Can only sign 3 in a year though from memory. Max of 1 Irish too.

Senior list is 38 players. I think the rule still exists where for each veteran you have outside your senior list you lose a rookie spot. Clubs that don't have two vets outside the senior list are allowed to nominate a rookie to be promoted without a senior-listed player being on the long-term injury list.

There is no longer a minimum on the number of rookies you have to have.

I think the maximum number of rookies is down from 8 (as part of the GWS/GC concessions)  back to 6 (they are deciding whether to drop this further down to just 4). This number doesn't include international rookies as tigs mentioned.

The old mature-age rookie rules was a limit of two 23 and over. I thought I saw somewhere that this restriction was lifted to unlimited but I can't find where nor any other source to deny or confirm it.

Correct

Simon is an international rookie who is outside the standard rookie quota

from wikipedia

In 2008, the AFL increased the international rookie list for clubs to eight per year and a total of up to twenty four players at any one time. Scholarship costs were also reduced from A$10,000 to $1,000 for players who remain in their country of origin during their development and $20,000 for players who are moved (such as to Australia) to continue their development.[5]

you could field a team of international rookies it seems.
