Sheesh we did it the hard way. The Pies flooded to save the game and make it a tight scrap and we kept kicking it straight to them      . We are still a dumb side in some ways and our skill deficiencies show up under pressure.  It wasn't until the Pies tired due to the hard work they needed to do to keep the game a scrap that we broke it open. Finally had space to run and carry instead of all this chip chip chip crap. lol Stan Alves laying into Cambo on the radio for making a career out of receiving and giving off 15m chip passes.

At least we won while at least half the side had dirty days.

Nathan Brown yet again has demonstrated why he is one of the few proven match-winners in the AFL with a devastating final quarter burst to get Richmond out of jail against a gallant Collingwood at the MCG.

The Magpies, sitting on the bottom of the ladder and coming off the fourth worst loss in their history last week - a 112-point mauling at the hands of Fremantle - were forced to take on the Tigers without their four best players after spearhead Chris Tarrant was a late withdrawal with a calf injury joining skipper Nathan Buckley, Anthony Rocca and Josh Fraser on the sidelines.

Yet for three quarters the undermanned Magpies led a Richmond side that came into the game with five wins from seven matches including recent demolitions of reigning premiers Port Adelaide and Carlton, when they slammed on 13 goals to one in the first half.

However the Magpies could not hang onto their ten-point lead at three-quarter-time as Brown, who had been well held by acting Magpies' skipper James Clement, broke loose to kick five last-quarter goals as the Tigers moved into third place with a 13.15 (93) to 8.10 (58) victory.

 
 
Incredibly Brown kicked as many goals in the final quarter on his own as Richmond managed in the first three quarters as they found themselves unable to deal with a mass flood employed by Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse.

Malthouse, shorn of so much quality personnel, was forced to employ extra men in defence to clog up space for the brilliant Brown and to make life tough for the Tigers' giant forwards Matthew Richardson and Troy Simmonds.

The Magpies also forced stoppages at every opportunity and for three quarters the game resembled rugby rather than Australian Rules but the closeness of the scores kept the big crowd of more than 54,000 on tenterhooks.

Collingwood was also able to restrict what had been a free-scoring Richmond side in recent weeks because of the fine performances of its defenders with Simon Prestigiacomo brilliant against Matthew Richardson while Shane Wakelin played one of his best games and Clement was keeping a tight rein on Brown.

The Pies were also winning the all-important centre clearances as some of the Tigers'
much-improved players in recent weeks such as Brett Deledio, Kayne Pettifer and Shane Tuck struggled to have much of an impact.

But the Tigers were able to stay in touch thanks to their defence with Darren Gaspar continuing his magnificent season while Ray Hall was tremendous at centre-half-back even though Travis Cloke looked a constant danger at centre-half-forward for the Magpies.

The Tigers were struggling to cope with the Magpies' tactics and constantly chipped the ball backwards and sideways in a bid to break down the Pies' defensive tactics, in a far cry from the long and direct kicking which has been their trademark under new coach Terry Wallace in 2005.

But the Tigers finally broke the game open in the final quarter thanks to the brilliant Brown, who single-handedly turned what could have been a loss at the last change into an ultimately comfortable victory.

His first goal came from a mark after two minutes and after Blake Caracella kicked a steadier for the Pies, Brown really took over with a great snap off the pack cutting the margin to four points before a superb soccer goal across his body gave the Tigers the lead for the first time in the game at the 12-minute mark.

And after Mark Coughlan - who continued his fine season with 28 touches to be the Tigers' best midfielder along with skipper Kane Johnson - goaled on the run, the heads of the gallant Pies' players began to drop.

Brown then finished the tiring Pies off with two more goals while Joel Bowden, a fine player across half-back, sealed the game with a tough set shot from 35 metres as the Tigers' fans began to celebrate a hard-fought win over their arch rivals.

We didn't follow Wallace's run and carry gameplan in the first 3 quarters which allowed the Pies to flood back then hit us on the counter. We just didn't run and break the lines to give our forwards a chance of a 1-on-1 contest until the final quarter. Many of our guys weren't switched on upstairs and seemed to have read too many papers during the week that said today would be a %%%% job. Only from midway through the 3rd did we raise our intensity. Before that the Pies wanted it more.

Cambo had a bit of a shocker in the second quarter. Of his first 10 possies about 8 went to the opposition or resulted in a turnover lol. Agree Cambo was good in the third when he straightened up.

In saying that....Collingwood are for the tip. They are absolutely crap. For a side who gives their all for 3 quarters and still is only 10 points up at 3/4time....and we were playing crap. It doesnt say much. I thought we were outsmarted coaching wise. Malthouse couldnt stand toe to toe with us and he knew it so he built their performance around breaking us down and choking our midfield knowing that if our delivered was poor they would clean us up by having 1 on 3's and 2 on 4's.

Campell had a poor game today. Say what you like and Im a big fan of his but today was a write-off.

And lastly....Collingwood people are the biggest tip rats in the world. Now the idiot behind me is lucky not to be hospitalized as pure stupidity can often lead to such scenarios. I dont mind anyone having a crack at those who deserve it. Bag Tivers for his shambolic kicks.....bag Richo for being a goof....Bag Campell for being soft and your about to feel my fist....especially when you got ferrets like Caracella and Rocca in your team. Totally agree OM21, thats why i wont go to a Collingwood game again(made that pact 2 seasons ago) .They are the most rabid, abusive supporters in the league. They spend more time abusing the opposition than supporting there own team, and I get so angry, that i could probly end up in hospital, so its not worth it for me.
To think we beat them with one of our worst games this year is just so sweet

Im very bitter about not being able to live these days now at my ripe age of 24. I would have loved to have dropped a few of them in the outer.

@ Clokes ganging up on Deledio....its going to happen more often bc he is a ball-winner. He will take it on the chin and move on, although if I was Bretty I would have just laughed at the entire joke of a family. Now I've been a big rap for Cambo all season but his effort (or in this lack of effort in this case) in that marking contest against Burns in the second was terrible and then to give away the 50 metre penalty for giving the ball a love tap was unforgivable. And geez it looks even worse on the replay Now if he had given away 50 for taking Burns out in the marking contest I wouldn't care but .....

To make it worse I have money on Cambo getting suspended before the years out because he seems like an angry old man at times - he let me down yesterday  

I am just relieved we came away with a win because for 3 qtrs we were terrible, horrible and rabble.

2 things:

1. It doens't matter where the opposition is on the ladder you must show them some form of respect or they will drag you down to their level - the Pies did that for 3 qtrs yesterday. And it doen't make for good footy. To be prefectly honest at 1/2 time I thought we were gawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. We were fortunate that we were playing a team that doesn't remember how to win

2. It is a good sign that we can play so terribly and still come back and win. It shows we are improving because the Tigers of circa 2003 or 2004 would have rolled over and copped a spanking

Funny thing Mt - it did turn out to be a % job - now the third best in the league. The one thing that has changed this year is our average winning margin, it now sits at about 41 points for the season.

How frustrating a game was it to watch for three quarters, when a team only manages 5 goals in that time?

Talk about Jekyll and Hyde.  Maybe players thought they just had to go out there and it was just going to happen for them, because our players went away from just about everything that had won them games the previous weeks.  And it’s not surprising that some supporters had flashbacks to previous seasons.

Even though we only scored one goal in the third quarter, I thought the intensity went up a notch and the effort was a lot better.  We had plenty of scoring shorts, but just weren’t able to kick goals.

The last quarter came from who knows where.  It probably helped that players took charge in the last quarter and started to make it happen, rather than sitting back and letting the game unfold before them, which is exactly what we’ve been doing for years.

From that point of view, the game was worth the frustration of the first three quarters, if it gives players the confidence to know they can turn things around, if they work as a team and do the things TW asks of them.

We got away with it this week, maybe because we were up against an under-manned opposition, down on confidence.  Against different opposition, could we have been so lucky?
