Tigers turn up heat on Gold Coast hoodoo in Cairns training camp

FORMER Richmond captain Chris Newman hopes an intense tropical training camp will snap the Tigers' Cairns losing streak.

Richmond holds the unenviable record of being the only AFL team not to register a win against Gold Coast in the Suns' two years in the competition.

Both losses have come in Cairns under a three-year deal that will take the Tigers back to north Queensland in Round 16 next season.

Richmond players and coaches fly back to Melbourne today after a training camp in and around Cairns that included two days getting to know Cazaly's Stadium.

"We've been really fortunate to get the opportunity to come to Cairns, we've obviously played here a couple of years in a row without a lot of success, but hopefully this helps us next year when we play Gold Coast," Newman said on SEN.

The camp also included a multi-day Amazing Race challenge that involved players being split into six teams and exploring north Queensland on foot, by bike and in giant outrigger canoes.

The race also included a golf challenge, climbing Mt Sorrow at Cape Tribulation and a sandcastle-building contest at Port Douglas.

While clubs including Collingwood, St Kilda, Essendon, Carlton and Brisbane fly to the US for altitude training, Richmond and Melbourne are hoping to gain as much by training in extreme heat closer to home.

Newman said the hard work would continue in a heat chamber at the ME Bank Centre, Richmond's training facility at Punt Rd.

"It's been really good for the boys to get a bit of heat training here and we're all pretty fit," he said.

"It's all about heat acclimation, we play here during the year but we feel like there's some benefits to be gained by training in this heat."

Meanwhile, Newman said he would return to his No.1 guernsey after stepping down from the leadership group.

Newman backed new skipper Trent Cotchin to lead the club out of the wilderness.

"We've already seen he has a lot of leadership qualities and I'm looking forward to getting behind him and running out on the 'G in Round 1."

Audio: Chris Newman interviewed by Daniel Harford on SEN yesterday arvo....

Summary

* Been 35 degrees in Cairns. Good to get away from Melbourne for a bit and break up the usual preseason routine.

* Newy's Green team finished second in the Amazing Race.

* Trained at Cazaly stadium for two days [ed. hopefully it finally helps us when we play Gold Coast]

* All about heat acclimation [see above article]. We'll continue with the heat training down at Punt Rd in the heat chamber.

* He and Tucky don't do all the training being the oldies so they cop stick from the others [laughs]. They'll both ramp up into full training after Christmas.

* Vlastuin - very mature kid with leadership qualities. Yep he does play like Dimma from the highlights we've seen. Very hard at it. We've brought in guys with good character. All the mature guys we've picked up have fitted in well. The young guys have got plenty of weights time in the gym coming up.

* Back to the No.1 guernsey. Happy to go back to it. Looking forward to getting behind Cotchin as captain. Cotch has already shown that he’s got a lot of leadership qualities that are going to be really important for us. Newy backed Cotch's decision to wear the No.9. No disrespect to Jack Dyer as the Club pays tribute to Dyer in many areas around the Club (ie. B&F, grandstand,  etc...)

* Rapt for Maric and Grimes being promoted into the leadership group.  Ivan’s one of those guys who leads with his big presence out on the field. He had an outstanding season last season. He was in the leadership group at Adelaide and he possesses a lot of those qualities that fit the bill to be in the leadership group. Dylan Grimes is a great kid who does everything right. Obviously, he hasn’t played a lot of games but we feel like he’s going to be a really important part of our team going forward. So Newy was rapt for him and was looking forward to what he can do in the leadership group.

* Drug issue? Durgs are readily available in society now. Different to when Newy was growing up. It's something we address as a team. Obviously there's a no drug policy. Something to stay away from. It does put people in tricky situations during the offseason. Any player who thinks he will get away with it is kidding themselves. Leaders and teammates won't respect them and they won't play.

They won't play eh?  Unless they are A key game breaking mid fielder maybe.  If anything I've learnt from listening and watching AFL over the years is the rules are flexible if you can kick.
