WP...i sometimes wonder whether clubs actually give a toss a bag about players past records for they consistantly recruits players other clubs have labelled "too hard"..brendon fevola, ben cousins, wayne Carey, martin pyke, phil carmen..the list is endless. And yet all clubs are so fervent when it comes to nurturing and maintaining club culture.Do clubs only pay lip service to so called culture and when it comes to getting the four points they would sell their mother for a bag of magic beans

I think the difference is that existing players have already proven they can play at the level required, despite their character flaws, and some of those players you mentioned were top shelf, in terms of football ability.

So i can see why a club may take a risk, with the belief that they can turn around or at least keep in check whatever baggage they came with.

Sometimes it is the kick in the arse of being discarded by their club that they need, or at least thats probably what their new club is hoping.

When you talk about draftees, you still have question marks over whether they can actually make the step up and combine that with a questionable character, which decreases their chance of making the transition, and clubs are starting to see it as too risky.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

Al yep i agree with what you say re draftees.but if you think back to the 2004 draft we took the safe option in richard tambling and the hawks took the risky option of Buddy Franklin(and all the apparent question marks re character that he supposedly had) and well the rest is history.I can never follow the logic of football clubs they are so incosistant with their actions,so typically human ;D

that old chestnut?  ;D

I wonder if we would pick Tabling with the current regime?
His problem is between the ears, but for him to have escaped from the dysfunctional community he grew up in and make something of his life (even though he has failed as an AFL footballer, he still is doing much better than those he left behind) shows some sort of mental strength. I also remember reading before he was drafted how he wanted to move to Melbourne (or wherever) and was looking forward to getting away from Darwin.

I wonder if our character testing would have picked up on whatever mental frailty he has, or if he would still have been one that slipped under the radar?

Richmond is believed to be prepared to use its fifth selection on discarded Geelong ruckman Orren Stephenson.

Ch 7 news said Jason Laycock failed his medical so GWS will now draft Bret Thorton with their first pick in the PSD.

I wouldnt pick Stephenson either but if you want to give Ivan Maric a couple of games off during a very long season then having Stephenson around is probably not a bad option. You can stick him in against GWS or GCS or Melbourne and he can take some some games and big Ivan can have a break and prepare for the finals  :lol

Don't know if this is true but I remember hearing somewhere a few months back that due to Stephenson having a family and all, he was after a senior list spot if he was to keep playing in the AFL rather than being rookie listed with its much lower salary. I'd guess we'll find out on Tuesday morning.

Who the stuff do we have doing these tests? Craig Cameron? LMAO. Tambo is one of many Richmond players who ended up going to shrinks. Character tests what a waste of time

But why do we need to grab a dead end hack as insurance, one that is a proven hack. Why not churn through players at 22-24 years of age who are physically ready and have shown form in respective state leagues?

they probably wont make it either, but I'd rather give it a go and give ourselves some sort of chance to land a medium term player rather than go for someone like big O who you can categorically say will never develop into an afl standard ruckman and will be gone in a year. Sometimes I am just gobsmacked at the sheer stupidity

could not agree more.
it is stupidity or just shows a lack of faith in their own ability to go thru good sound processes.

anyway as i asked on the other thread how do we have a psd pick. we have 38 on the list proper and ive been told the vets has been abolished. this would mean to use a psd pick we have to cut a contracted player probably one we just signed up.
can anyone tell me how many we are now allowed on the list proper.

Sheesh, a simple google search will show you that in 2013 you can have a combination of:

senior/cat. A rookie
38/6
39/5
40/4

Vets are included in the 38-40 but now allowed more than two and with different salary cap perks, and cat. B, internationals etc are excluded.
