I dont mind spending time and money saving these guys ,because i would hope that their country would do likewise for any of our citizens.I understand peoples frustration at the apparent silliness of their escapade, however i think its silly and possibly idiotic ventures such as this that push the envelope of human existance  even further. Our world is becoming ever more sanitised, where sticking your neck out has become Taboo. But Ivan i do have sympathy for your point of view

so how do taxpayers fund it if it's a cruise ship?

and in the rare cases where it does actually cost extra tax payers dollars, it is only a problem with foreigners, as at least an Australian pays part of the cost with taxes?

the tax raised from ciggies go no where near the covering the medical cost of related sickness, same with alcohol.

The vast majority of people who end up in hospital do so through their own actions and compared to what little money is spent on rescuing sailor's the bill is enormous.

Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

I just don,t see the difference between someone being rescued because his/her boat has sunk and we pay that bill, yet if your unlucky to be transported to hostpital by ambulance you have to pay for if you havn,t got ambo cover.

I guess another reason we do this Ivan is because our governments sign international agreements which deal with such incidents.

So does the cruise liners owners give a bill to the govt that we have to pay.

Most of these rescues are made by the navy who are sailing about doing SWA any way, so most of the time it costs nothing.

In my experience people who get uptight and moan about this are those that changing their brand of tomato sauce is about the most adventurous thing they do.

Gigantor I think you summed it up pretty well.

id be pretty sure thats not how it works. Its the law of the ocean that one vessel helps another when in distress and i cant see what recourse the ship owners would have in recovering costs from the australian governement.

of course you can moan about, i just think its petty.

If it was a cruise liner sinking and the government had to rescue the passengers and crew from sea, who would you be moaning about should be paying the cost, the passengers and crew or the ship owners?

If it's anything like my Italian/Sicilian in laws, then they're probably still yelling at each other over it.

G, I saw a news report that they are commencing salvage in the next few weeks. There goes my idea for a hotel & restaurant specifically catering for abseilers.  :banghead
