It is believed Essendon, Geelong and the Gold Coast are the AFL clubs being investigated by the crime commission.

The five NRL clubs under scrutiny have been named in intelligence gathered by anti-doping agency ASADA.

It is understood it raises suspicions about whether the supplement regimes used by individual players or advisers linked to small groups of players may be in breach of anti-doping rules.

Fairfax Media is not naming the five clubs believed to have been referred to ASADA.

If any club could be that stupid it's our club.

We are the only club that probably tried to tank and failed at it.

I wouldn't be suprised if any club was in on it and I wouldn't be suprised if some of our players were involved.
We definately would be the only club to have used peptides and do it wrong.

Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports executive director as well as Richmond director Malcolm Speed reckons the investigation could take six months. That would mean this whole drugs saga will hang over basically the whole season.

ANTI-DOPING authority investigators will interview 150 NRL and AFL players, staff and administrators, with the devastating scope of the investigation revealed by the government body.

It's understood that 70 to 80 players and officials could be charged with doping violations and various penalties, including the potential for lifetime bans from their code.Players who have doped themselves using substances unable to be detected by drug tests are also being targeted, with ASADA able to take action based on intelligence.

ASADA, which tipped off the crime commission, resulting in its report claiming widespread organised crime links and performance-enhancing drug use in Australian sport, has warned its investigation will go for months and could widen.

AFL players have been caught on telephone taps talking with underworld figures, including bikies involved in drug dealing.

The outlaw motorcycle club members, some of whom constantly travel to Asian nations that produce steroids and peptides, have been distributing performance-enhancing drugs in Australia.

It's believed most sales are through gyms.

The Herald Sun has been told Australian Federal Police agents have referred intelligence about AFL players to Victoria Police.

Players have appeared on the radar of the nation's peak law enforcement body over many years. Some are household names and have come to notice when found to be linked to criminals under investigation for dealing in illegal non-performance-enhancing drugs.

Most of the intelligence pre-dates the Australian Crime Commission's year-long investigation into drugs in sport. The release of its findings last week generated unprecedented debate about the nature and extent of the problem.

I read this week that Trent Robinson who's the coach of the Sydney Roosters in the NRL is the brother of Dean "the Weapon" Robinson. And he reckons his brother will get another job in sports when all this investigation stuff is over
