Bennell shines in All Star romp over Tigers

GOLD COAST midfielder Harley Bennell and Western Bulldogs forward Liam Jones led the Indigenous All Stars to a commanding 50-point win over Richmond in Friday night's pre-season showpiece in Alice Springs.

Bennell, 20, was awarded the Polly Farmer medal for best on ground after an impressive display through the midfield in the 14.6 (90) to 6.4 (40).

Jones kicked two goals and marked strongly on the lead and in packs before showing more signs in the ruck and across half-back.

Adelaide's Graham Johncock also impressed with three goals after starting the game in defence.

Carlton's Eddie Betts nailed two; one after an impressive effort in the pocket where he bounced up from a marking contest with David Astbury and wheeled around to slot the goal.

It was an undermanned Tigers' outfit with many of their blue chip players missing, although their absences gave some young cubs a chance to stand out.

Without the likes of captain Trent Cotchin, forward Jack Riewoldt, ruckman Ivan Maric, defender Alex Rance and midfielder Brett Deledio, the Tigers fielded a young side with eight players in the yellow and black for the first time.

From the recent draftees, Nick Vlastuin - who was drafted with selection no.9 overall last year - was the most noticeable with a handful of solid possessions.

Second year forward Todd Elton impressed with some solid marks but struggled with his kicking at times while Dustin Martin won plenty of the ball across half-back but was let down by his disposal.

Orren Stephenson, in his first game for the Tigers, got better against Paddy Ryder as the night progressed, and kicked a goal in the second quarter after Brett Goodes gave away a 50m penalty and another in the final quarter.

Luke McGuane played forward and kicked two goals

The Tigers were captained by indigenous midfielder Shane Edwards, who had an impressive game in black and yellow after spending the lead-up with the All Stars.

Other standouts for the All Stars included Harley Bennell, who had a couple of electrifying runs along the wing in the second quarter, and Hawthorn's Amos Frank.

Frank was involved throughout the game across half-forward, and while his kicking lacks penetration, he took a handful of marks and laid a strong tackle on Martin in the third quarter.

Both Davey brothers were busy; Aaron setting up Jones for the first goal of the game in the opening 30 seconds and Alwyn with a collection of classy touches.

The match was played with the temperature hovering around the 30-degree mark, with a brief shower and gusts of wind featuring in the first half.

The game started with the All Stars War Cry, which was led by Aaron Davey.

All Stars too strong for the Tigers

This was Richmond, but a not-just-yet version. There was no Trent Cotchin, no Brett Deledio, no Ivan Maric, and Jack Riewoldt had flown home with the flu. Last night's match against the indigenous All Stars was a chance for the Tigers to work on the sorts of things they want to do in round one, not necessarily who will be doing it. They will have forgotten this loss by the end of March, but it was one that made for interesting viewing anyway. Mostly because of how well, and easily, their opponents combined.

The All Stars had been in camp together since Tuesday, training just a couple of times, but looked as though they had played together far more often, winning by 50 points and never really looking like they would be pushed. Paddy Ryder dominated the ruck and had the likes of Harley Bennell, Aaron and Alwyn Davey waiting to rush the ball away. They were quicker, and more slick. Bennell had the ability, said coach Michael O'Loughlin afterwards, to become one of the very best players in the AFL, and for a long time.

"He's starting to realise the work rate and professionalism and dedication you need to succeed at this level and he's building a career not for one, two or three years, but to get a 10-plus year career out of it," he said of the Gold Coast onballer, who won the Polly Farmer Medal as best on ground. "I think it's sunk in. He's a really quiet individual, he doesn't know many of these guys but he has a genuine care for everybody. He's a brilliant kid, I absolutely love him and he's in a brilliant environment at the Gold Coast to succeed."

Eddie Betts and Graham Johncock teamed up well together in the forward line, Johncock kicking three goals and Betts two of his own. Liam Jones' took two big marks in the first 10 minutes, and scored both times. Amos Frank, recruited from central Australia by Hawthorn two years ago, kept finding the ball across half-forward and Jed Anderson, grabbed by the Hawks in a trade deal with GWS at the end of last season, did some good things too: he was brave, willing to get hit, and able to provide some special finishes.

Richmond's best player was one of its regular best players: Dustin Martin, and the team was filled with plenty of kids. Nick Vlaustin, the Tigers' first pick in last year's draft, was able to use his body well a few times to block his opponent, protect the ball, grab it and get it away. Matt McDonough kicked a late goal, and Todd Elton missed some early chances early after doing everything right to get the ball in his hands. David Astbury was back, and will hopefully stay back, after another bad year with injury. Conca played well through the midfield.

The game was the All Stars' first in a while, and they did it without Adam Goodes, Lance Franklin, Shaun Burgoyne and others. It's two weeks before the Tigers will play again, in their first NAB Cup game, and they at least know who they'll want to take another look at. That was the main thing coach Damien Hardwick, expecting to pick from an almost full squad for the first NAB Cup game, had wanted to get out of it.

"It was always going to be a game where we were going to see what some of the players could do," he said.

"We saw some really good signs from our young boys, Nick Vlastuin I thought in the last quarter was very very good and Kamdyn McIntosh showed he's capable of playing centre half back so we've got some exciting things out of it."

"It was more from an individual point of view we were looking for certain signs and we got that tonight."

Embarrassing Richmond no match for Indigenous hunger, speed

    Sam Edmund, Alice Springs
    From: Herald Sun
    February 09, 2013

RICHMOND'S first game of the year descended to almost embarrassing levels last night after the Tigers were swept aside by the Indigenous All-Stars.

In warm conditions, the Tigers were never in the hunt and went down 14.6 (90) to 6.4 (40) in front of 8350 fans at Alice Springs' Traeger Park.

Richmond couldn't, or wouldn't, match the All-Stars' hunger at the contest and struggled to contain their run and spread from stoppages in the slightly shortened match.

Both sides missed key players, with stars including Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli, Shaun Burgoyne, Brett Deledio, Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt all sitting out.

The All-Stars' speed inside 50m was the telling factor, with Graham Johncock (three goals), Liam Jones, Eddie Betts (both two) and Lindsay Thomas (one) all on the end of quick counter-attacks. Betts - involved in an intriguing match-up with Steven Morris - Thomas and Johncock all had moments of brilliance.
Tigers

But it was Jones who caught the eye early, with the Western Bulldogs forward leading quickly and marking strongly to kick two first-quarter goals. Leroy Jetta's 60m bomb on the run helped the All-Stars to a 23-point quarter-time lead they never looked like relinquishing.

It was an even performance from the victors, who were propelled by the midfield influence of Harley Bennell, who won the Polly Farmer Medal for best afield. Alwyn Davey and Lindsay Thomas were consistent contributors, Neville Jetta was a success off half-back, while Brett Goodes showed signs he could make it at the highest level playing in the same position.

Richmond started with Luke McGuane and Aaron Edwards deep inside 50m in the absence of Riewoldt and Tyrone Vickery. McGuane kicked two, but Edwards' first game in yellow and black was a success. The former North Melbourne and West Coast forward looked bright early before the supply dried up.

Second-year forward Todd Elton looked promising, despite his kicking continuing to let him down. Dustin Martin lifted after a poor first quarter, but his influence was blunted by unusually poor execution.

Acting captain Shane Edwards got better as the game wore on. Orren Stephenson did the lion's share of the ruck work in the absence of Ivan Maric and finished with two goals.

The Tigers played three draftees - Nick Vlastuin, Kamdyn McIntosh and Matthew McDonough - and rookie Cadeyn Williams. While none of the quartet exerted any great influence, none looked out of their depth. Vlastuin's ferocious attack on the football late in the match was eye-catching.

What a load crap, pathetic, honestly, I read some of the headlines this morning and thought we were thumped by about 150 points, bloody hell 50 points with near on our entire team missing is a win for mine.

The game was used exactly how the RFC wanted it used, our new players had a run and did well, Martin showed up, the O surprised me, Nick Vlastuin, Kamdyn McIntosh and Matthew McDonough - and rookie Cadeyn Williams all looked comfortable at that level with Vlastuin's attack on the football apparently "eyecatching".

To call this game "embarrassing" for the club...shesh, the articles this morning are more "embarrassing" than the game!!!
DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

Same Edmund is clearly a wanker who saw what he wanted to see, dissapointing really because he will never get more than table scraps from Ralphy let alone anywhere near what Robbo does.  :lol

Like I said in a previous post, scoreboard could be frustrating to look at but getting out unscathed is the result we were looking for mind you giving the kids a run on the park for the FIRST time.

I look back at last year and those solid wins in practise games against hawks etc then nab cup may not have done the best for us as we were firing on all cylinders too early. Where as Carlton lost every preseason game and still came out and whooped us, pies and lions heavily

Watch this space Sam  :shh

Didn't see any of it, but no injuries equals a win for me.

Hardwick said the game was all about experimenting with the young line-up.

"We always knew it was an exhibition-type game, we were always going to try things. At various stages we put a few blokes behind the ball and then we tried it the other way," Hardwick said.

"We had a relatively young squad out there just to get them in tune with what we're trying to do going forward."
