Rate our preseason: pros and cons?
« on: March 16, 2013, 11:09:16 PM »
As the title says - how did you rate our preseason all up?

Pros - including what/who surprised or impressed you so far?

Cons - not the usual such and such is still a dud  ;D but things that we still need to improve?

For the record:

Richmond   1.2.9-30   defeated   Melbourne  0.2.3-15
Richmond   0.6.8-44     lost to     North Melb. 0.7.6-48
Richmond   2.8.20-86  defeated  Essendon   1.10.9-78
Richmond   0.13.7-85  defeated  Hawthorn   0.13.6-84
Richmond     14.8-92  defeated  W.Bulldogs  12.11-83

We finished 3rd in the preseason at 4-1.

Despite the win/loss ratio I remain unconvinced.

Can't wait for Ramps review, break out the popcorn and enjoy the Patrick Smith of OER  :santa
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

From the limited games i saw::

Jack was obviously told not to kick goals but to pass off wherever possible  - Will kick them in the season proper
McGuane still shows more than any other option in that spot, i'm happy for him to keep his spot
Sheds looks looks like improving even more..
Vlastuin looks the goods, another astute pickup
Conca and Ellis, both fit and hungry.
Chaplin appears worth it
Petterd will be lifted off the rookie list another astute pickup

A. Edwards - We should've peeed him off when he was arrested.  a waste  :-\

It looked like we were purposely wanting close games.  We would dominate the game but then have our forwards pass off when they should have had a shot. i also noticed we'd throw in our B and C grade midfield when in front.  i thought against Norf it was obvious Dimma didnt want to win, especially with the boys on the bench.  Which says to me he didnt want to make the Nob Cup GF.

But the thing i liked was, we move the ball very fast and many times end to end for a goal.  We have depth and when picking a team, its difficult to fit past regulars in.

Missing:-  We still need a good tagger, a Jackson who can kick.
             - Vickery needs to step up or let someone else do the job, but then again he was probably only going half pace and looking after himself for the season proper.  We'll see though

I'm not overly excited.

Pros: No major injuries, Martin looks set for a big year,  Deledio is looking really good, as does Houli, Ellis looks to have gotten better, Newman in a new role, Cotch is captain, Reiwoldt looks fit and ready for a big year.  Vasltuin looks a good pickup. Petterd wants the spot, Chaplin looks an excellent pickup.
It's unlikely "Lockup" will play a game.
....Oh..... And what I've seen of Knights.

Cons: Vickery, I'm worried that he doesn't have it.
Forward line set up still isn't working but if Vickery was firing then it would be.
Would've loved to see Griffiths up forward but it looks like he's locked in down back.
Haven't seen Grimey or Foley yet.
.....Oh....... And what I haven't seen of Knights.

Pros:
* we won close games
* no injuries
* got to see some of the kids

Cons:
* we continue to let teams back into games by having 5-10 minute lapses in qtrs (just watch the Hawk game 1st qtr)
* Forward line set up - seems to work better when McGuane is there and Vickery isn't
* Vickery - horribly out of form
* we still make poor decisions in tight situations

Pros:

Petterd and Vlastuin. Starting to get some real depth

Cons:

Forward line and entry. I'm afraid we won't be able to kick big enough scores to put away the crap sides, and struggle to beat the sides around us.

AFL pre-season report card
By Adam Jones, Ben Hocking and Michael Rogers

RICHMOND

What went right: The Tigers' form was excellent throughout the NAB Cup with wins over Hawthorn, Essendon, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs, and a narrow loss to North. Midfield guns Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio and Dustin Martin are all firing while rookie recruits Ricky Petterd and Orren Stephenson have impressed enough to be elevated. Nathan Foley is the only senior player on the sidelines.

What went wrong: Nothing, unless you count a social media rumour mill that went into overdrive about Dustin Martin. Thankfully none of the supposition has come true and the Tigers remain focused on their on-field aspirations - their first finals series for 12 years.

Rating: 9/10

Gave us a 7. Happy with the wins but not too happy about how we were not able to kick away from the opposition on the scoreboard. Poor accuaracy in front of goal hurt us, but hoping this was just pre-season cobwebs. In saying that, we did do a lot of experimentation and combining this with poor scoring accuracy may explain why games were closer than we would have liked.
One of the big positives was our inside 50 stat. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think we beat every team we played on this count. If our forwards can start kicking straight [Bummerblitz Hat on] We could be in for a very promising season[Bummerblitz Hat off\]

In my opinion, it was the most positive preseason we have had in many years.

My top 5 positives are -

1. Chaplin is another massive inclusion for mine - the biggest improvement of the off-season. He will make a greater difference to our team structure than many will believe.

2. Petterd stepping up off the rookie list along with the Big O were pleasant surprises for mine. Petterd looks to have won the half back role on current form and the Big O proven an able backup ruck.

3. 4-1 when we weren't fielding our best side every week and the manner in which we fought out tight games was excellent.

4. Vlaustin's impressive performance in the preseason games has proven he can play a solid 'bit-part' in our line up. I really did not expect any of this years ND recruits to be able to earn a spot in our team given the increased competition for spots from mature aged players but his form has warranted an early call up imo.

5. Choco Williams work with Martin, Conca and Ellis. His motivation for these talented midfielders could make the difference to whether we lift as a team. I am particularly excited about Martin if his fitness has improved as much as reported.

Honorable mentions - Houli's & Lids form

My top 5 negatives are -

1. A. Edwards - I had high hopes for Edwards this season but he has completely gone missing this preseason. I thought he would give us another option up forward but he has barely touched the ball to date.

2. Vickery - another disappointment. Was hoping he could step up and regain the form he had before his shoulder injuries but I'm starting to fear that he may struggle to exercise the demons in his head (ie Tambling) and fail to regain the confidence he needs. He is a talent so I pray it will just take a few games to shake off the cobwebs.  :pray

3. Our goal kicking and work inside F50 - thought this was to be a focus???

4. Foley - we need him for quality midfield depth. Makes a huge difference to our rotations.

5. Helbig's absence. I was hoping he would have cemented a spot in the team this year.
