Carey Not Sold On Richmond
MMM
Sunday, May 5, 2013

Wayne Carey believes the Tigers are still a few players away from being a finals contender.

After opening the season with three consecutive wins, Richmond have now lost three in a row after falling to the undefeated Geelong on Saturday night by 44 points.

Talking on Triple M's The Sunday Rub, Wayne Carey explained what he thinks the Tigers need and why he isn't going to guarantee that Richmond are a finals team.

Carey, Mark Stevens (from the Herald-Sun) and one other guy on MMM:

* Improved probably 5-10% at best but still the same old problems - ball use, decision making, discipline and some players not working hard enough. Main crux is their inability to make smart decisions and maintain possession under real pressure.

* Long way away from the top 4 echelon. Will finish 8th at best. Carey said more likely 9-11th spot like North. Will rue losing to Freo last week. They have to win those close games.

* Carey said the Tigers are still 2-3 players away from being a finals contender. Still need support for Jack so another forward and a big key defender. Rance is terrific but he's punching above his weight; Chaplin is just a 2nd-3rd defender. The other guy said the Tiger tall defenders did a good job last night. If Hawkins and Pods had got control of the game the margin could've been 60 points plus.

* Richmond gave up 15 goals 5 behinds from turnovers last night.

* Big 3 weeks coming up for Richmond with games against Port, Melbourne and Essendon. Beat Port on Saturday arvo and they could be 6-3 as the Tiges usually play well in the Dreamtime game; but likewise lose to Port who'll be favourites and you could see Richmond being 3-6 (although they should be Melbourne).

Agreed. Not sold either.
Although I'd hoped we had turned a corner.

All hope that I'd had for finals is well and truly gone.

Believe Dimma heard this and gathered the team after PSM to discuss the implications.

Carey been foretelling doom for us for years. Heard him again on the Mannabrook (sp?) Footy Show spruik the same sentiments last week. Said we would lose the GC game too.

Some media personalities and opposition supporters have been so used to us being the competition whipping boy they resent this changing. No we are not a top 4 side but it is becoming increasingly clear that we are a top 8 side building every year.  :thumbsup

Poor Carey is in mourning for his beloved Roos me thinks ;D

It's the Marngrook Footy Show stripes  :thumbsup

I actually find it amsuing when people say "Richmond haven't beaten any of the top sides". The draw is done at the completion of the previous season and is based on a whole range of factors, we don't control who we play and how many times we play them

So.....

1. It's not our fault we haven't played Hawthorn or Sydney yet - 2 of the top 4 sides. haven't got a chance of beating them if you haven't played them  ::)

2. yep we lost badly against Geelong (did any of these so called experts actually expect us to win; me thinks not), stuffed up against the Pies by not sticking to the game plan. As for the Bombers - we were shocking

3. We lost to Freo by a point, a game that we should have won but threw away with 20 seconds of stupidity

4. Two of the games we have won are against 2 finals sides of 2012. Adelaide for memory finished 4th in 2012 and I would argue that most soo called "experts" had them again finishing top 4-6, so is that a scalp, again not our fault that the Crows have been disappointing.

5.  Ditto the Eagels most so called experts had them pencilled in for top 4 so ....  :whistle

6. Carlton - well I am pretty sure everyone was saying as soon as Mick was appointed coach they were going to be top 4 as well.... so .... not our fault they are an over rated rabble

7. N0rt - obviously the most pathetic effort of the year - enough said!

8. Finally the likes of Wayne Carey didn't have us finsihing in their collective top 8's this year so I really don't understand what the big deal is... all about finding a headline me thinks
"Oh yes I am a dreamer, I still see us flying high!"
