its the safe option for them, punishing Richmond won't draw a fat flying stuff from their boss, maybe it makes him happy and gets them a few brown nose points.

It averages out in the end.
Look at Jakey, 2 years ago he couldn't buy a free.
The problem is the edicts sent from head office. Now that there are layers of bureaucracy governing the rules of the game, it's bound to stuff up.
The yearly changes to interpretations infuriate me. In the end, after a couple of weeks of interpretation changes, after the inevitable outcry, holding the ball goes back to being.....holding the ball. These interpretation changes are a perpetuating cycle of justification which keeps people in footy jobs.
And the Bellchambers free. Are you kidding Giesh. Please, this man needs help.

that is all well and good but the interpretations are changing during the game live depending on which team is going to get a free apparently, and we are on the bull poo end of it, if you think this game was bad, wait til the bombers one, I will guarantee they will get a stuffing fluorescent escort all the way to a win.

It would not surprise me one bit re the Dreamtime game.

Don't forget how much they loved penalising Richos non-push in the back before he kicked what should have been the winning goal.

The umpire, emotionally caught in the moment, charged in with intent to pay that one.

More petrified of the umpires than the opposition because the umpires control the game.

They can ignore frees they choose and pluck out frees they choose.

They have a lot of power and abuse it especially when emotions get the better of them.

Stubborn also.

I too am not worried about the opposition, I think we take it up to anyone but I am more worried that as soon as anything looks like it is going to go physical, we are going to get a free against us, no matter what...

For several years I've been formulating a conspiracy that the umpires are under the instruction to keep the games "exciting" and thus are given the liberty to control the momentum. So many rules now are grey: high contact vs new sliding rule, the double movement/push, new ruck rules, deliberate out of bounds, holding/dropping the ball and incorrect disposal, umpire 'abuse' and so on. The umpires now can change the flow by helping the team on the back foot and award momentum crushing frees. It is then no surprise why we appear to be so hard done by when we are beating teams comprehensively early on (every game this year) and are constantly penalised for crap and receive nothing ourselves until junk time in the 4th when we're playing catch up.

Too much money is involved and Andy Dimwit is hellbent on making the game as big a spectacle as possible with no concern to the actual fabric of the game. Salary caps, hand outs, drafts, even the draw, it's all compromised. No reason why the adjudication, especially in big games, wouldn't be either.
