Key decisions - RFC (Next 9 months)
« on: May 26, 2013, 01:04:38 PM »
Firstly, the season is not over. We were pathetic last night, gutless, scared, unconfident, lacking in intensity, all the above. We still have a good draw and should win 60-75% of the games coming home after the bye and make up the numbers in finals or at worst finish 9th or 10th. In the scheme of success, it doesn't really matter except for finals experience which would be nice.

Key decisions to be made going forward are really vital, and may hinge on whether we have Hardwick at the helm for much longer.

1. Play the future Premiership Players, not the short term fixes:
We've had really poor selection at the selection table this season. Foley doesn't look ready for AFL, Lonergan selection was stupid, Nahas getting games each week is a waste of time. Jackson not being accountable and the favourism is unprofessional, McGuane playing ahead of any of Griffths, Astbury, McBean, Elton surely mix it up and who knows who will unearth. McGuane isn't the answer.
Understand injuries and lack of position cover change this but there are plenty of kids that could be being developed over some "good servants" who have failed to cut it for half a decade.

2. Clear the list with the "good servants":
From the backline:
Luke McGuane
Robin Nahas
Daniel Jackson
Matthew White
Sam Longergon
Aaron Edwards
Tom Derickx

All must be off the list. Not a single one of them worries me about going to another club and blossoming so they shouldn't be playing next year. Draft some kids in, look to the WAFL, the SANFL and get some 20-24 year old types - like your Steve Morris.

3. Fill the gaps with youth and develop:
Understand that depth is our issue and most of the older heads were drafted in as rookies, but short term fixes aren't the answer. Need to get more kids in and develop them to be apart of a premership when its our time. Crazy to think this year or next year we are a chance at winning a flag so bringing in a 29 year old Edwards is strange, even stranger when you don't play him.

For mine we should be playing this side as much as possible for the rest of the year after the bye, with some games against some of the lighter sides in the AFL we should be chucking as much games into these guys as possible.

B:  Newman Rance Batchelor
HF: Houli Chaplin Morris
C: Arnot Cotchin Ellis (inj = Grigg)
HF: Vlastiun Vickery Conca (inj = King)
F: Edwards Riewoldt McBean

R: Maric Deledio Martin

Int: Foley King Griffiths Grimes (inj = Dea)

Have to play Arnot from here, absolute must. McBean after the bye should be a good month of footy against teams like Saints, Brisbane, GC, Adelaide. Think we should persist with Griffiths as a swing man, can't be worse than McGuane.
I don't want to see White, Nahas, Jackson, McGuane any more, you could add King and Grigg to the list too. We've had them for what seems like a whole decade and aren't winners. They are used to losing, we need winners, or at least begin to breed some.

Key positions to look for in the draft. Number 1 priority would be a forward. Small or Tall. Must take best available forward. We have nothing coming through in terms of small forwards. Absolutely nothing. Would love a little eager indigenous boy to be found that can run like the wind. We also need another key forward to help Jack out. It looks like McBean is that man but is 4 years away from his peak.

Need another decent midfielder as well.

Median house prices have fallen in Melbourne.
How about looking at Troy Taylor again.

So has the price of lamb. Reston Roberts can be our token Derek Kickett.

Hardwick is looking for the "fixes" instead of developing talent.

Griffiths, Arnot, Astbury, McBean should be playing.

I think Hardwick and maybe the club has become obsessed with 'playing finals' and throwing everything at it this season. With an easy draw it should be achieved but if it isn't, it won't be the end of the world. If we do make it, so what, we cop a trip away to the west against West Coast or Freo or if we are lucky we may cop a Collingwood or Essendon, which will be great but could be an ugly finish with our inability to turn up for big games.

Stay on course, keep our direction. Unfortunately Hardwick is starting to look over his shoulder and is looking at achieving results short term instead of continuing with the Premiership build. Can't blame him when your job is on the line, but the best thing for this club is to be playing our future premiership players as much as possible, not short term fixes and stalwarts who have failed for the last decade and been given a stack of chances.

They should have been playing round 1 if we are/were serious about winning a GF in the future.

Instead we are riding on the Hardwick goal of a) comming 8th b) keeping his job.

Griffiths and Astbury, would be lucky to get 5 possessions between them, if they are AFL standard I assume they are killing it at Coburg

Not going to happen guys when the senior coach himself says one of these duds is our best player of the season so far.... the fact is dan jackson will play till he retires not till he is delisted. Bring in another 3 vlastuins and he'll still be best 22

I think Griffiths is peeed at the club. Dropped after one game.
He hasn't showed any real interest this year. He is also surrounded by duds at Coburg.
I actually don't blame him when you see guys like Nahas running around in the senior team without a single good game under his belt. Go figure!

How is a key forward sposed to kill in for Coburg when the midfeild is shyte?

Some players play well at senior level without killing it in the 2's.

I cant believe people want to see Kingy removed...sheesh I sometimes wonder.
As for Griff ..if he's spat the dummy because he got dropped, then seriously is that the type of character  we want going forward.

So Pope, what's worse gifting unproven recruits a game before they are ready or gifting average 'journeymen' games based on experience?

I agree that Nahas, McGuane, White and Jackson are all getting games when they don't deserve them. Essendon were more than happy to let Jackson have infinite amount of possessions last night because they know he wouldn't hurt them at worst and at best turn the ball over. Yes he speaks well, yes is is intelligent and a leader off field but this game is played on the field and Jackson is a liability.

Nahas is and always has been too small and is now too slow. Waste of space.

McGuane did not get much of a chance last night with the lack and quality of delivery. With this in mind though, he is nothing more than a good honest toiler. Throw Griffiths in or McBean (his forms warrants it) and tell them their defensive pressure and ability to present and bring the ball to ground is what they will be judged on rather than just goals and it becomes a learning experience for the lads too. If neither are ready physically then A Edwards should be given a game with the same instructions.

White is depth. He should never be played in front of a midfielder in form. He hasn't the skills or decision making ability to become a lock player. Speed and run - that's it.

Maric shouldn't have been given a game nor Foley. Both are still carrying injuries and/or are underdone. Foley turned the ball over at will and Maric couldn't get out of a jog or jump.

It takes a loss to see the obvious cracks that were hidden beneath the shine. We can't make the whole-sale changes you suggest but the selection panel needs to look long and hard at their plan for the year and seek to transition all of the players you mentioned out and give the younger guys a taste.

Lonegan  :facepalm
