From my point of view, I didn't think Whelans actions were negligent or reckless, just seemed like a desperate attempt to smother. On the other hand, I did think the whack to Bowdens face was a bit late

(Is it only me or was Whelans action negligent if not reckless). Brown had the ball in the air and kicking it when Whelan dived "recklessly" at his anchored leg. I agree it is good to show enthusiasm and hardness but IMO Whelan was way off the mark, way too late and negligent. Was a free paid for a low tackle or trip ?? How can a player be reported for jumping into someones back a second too late but not in this case?? I dont want to be seen as a sore loser and nothing that gets said will get Browny back on the field but geez I'm still shaking my head at Whelans "white line fever" attempt at tackling?/smothering? or what ever it was. I am certain it was an accident and Whelan may be a great bloke but...

Don't ask me why but I taped the game today and watched the incident again  :o

The main reason was because Doc Larkins said on Triple M on Saturday that one of the reasons the injury occured was the fact that Brown slipped as he went to kick. I was curious to see if this was the case. I tend to agree with Larkins that Brown did slip - I remember as he was driven passed on the ambo buggie that his boots were full of turf - that could contribute to a lack of grip.

But back to your comment Tiv - I don't think Whelan was reckless - all I can see that he did was dive to try and smother - we are talking about things in split seconds. Brown slipping coupled with Whelan trying to smother contirbuted to a very unfortunate accident IMO. I also think that there was no free kick paid simply because it looks as if Brown slipped while Whelan dived to smother - as I said a split second thing and unfortuante one at that

That’s cool X, we agree to disagree, no probs. :D

Tiv – you’re right, it is like old times a bit!!!

There’s been whispers about the quality of the surface at the phonebox having something to do with the injury, and I’m with you WP, when Brown went to kick it, he slipped, no doubt. Whelan’s gone the massive desperate dive – and its all gone pear shaped.

I thought Matty Whelan was actually really good in the aftermath of this – he tried to wave and stop play because he could see how bad Browny was hurt. Whelan himself ended up going off soon afterwards, I think from the after effects of the kick he got while putting on the smother.

But as he walked off, I had a good look at him and he seemed pretty shaken up and a bit pale in the face.

Had a second look at the incident myself last night and I may have been a tad hasty in declaring negligence on Whelans behalf, different angle different opinion. But, contact on Brown was low, as also miss timed, was a free kick awarded for a low tackle or trip??

I think Holland (No 4?) was very lucky not to have been given 1 week for the raised elbow against Gas. Couple of centermetres was the difference or should we say Gas is no "actor" or it may well have been two weeks. Intent was there, minimal contact...

There was no free kick paid Tiv.

I think you'll find the reason was there was no trip as Brown slipped and there was no"tackle" as it was deemed a a smother
