North Melbourne is set to be without its leading goalkicker, Lindsay Thomas, for the next fortnight after he was offered a two-match suspension for headbutting.
In addition to Thomas the match review panel also offered reprimands to Geelong's Joel Corey and Fremantle's Zac Dawson respectively for minor tripping and striking incidents.
Coleman Medal contender Thomas has been punished by the panel for an incident late in the Kangaroos' match against GWS.
Thomas won a free-kick for high contact and Townsend bumped him. The Kangaroos player responded by grappling with his opponent and leaning forcefully into him, pushing his forehead into Townsend's. The Giants player immediately complained about the incident to the presiding umpire, Sam Hay.
The punishment would ordinarily be cut from two matches to one with a guilty plea. That could not occur for Thomas because the Kangaroos forward was saddled with 88.75 carry-over points for a bump that broke the jaw of Melbourne's Daniel Nicholson late last year.
If Thomas accepts the penalty he would miss the Kangaroos' matches against Richmond and Brisbane. If he elected to challenge the panel decision at the tribunal he would risk also missing the round-17 match against Carlton.
