RICHMOND has defeated Gold Coast for the first time in three attempts, downing the Suns by nine points in a low-scoring affair at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns.

The Tigers led by seven points at three-quarter time and had the use of a significant breeze in the final term.

However, they didn't make their advantage count until Jack Riewoldt snapped a clever goal from the pocket to put them 16 points ahead.

Campbell Brown's goal cut the margin to 10 points with three minutes to play and Andrew Boston missed another set shot to tighten things up in the last minute, but the Tigers held on for a well-deserved victory, 6.17 (53) to 6.8 (44).

In truth, Richmond dominated open play from midway through the second quarter and it was only their inability to convert weight of possession into goals that prevented the game from being decided much earlier.

After losing to the Suns in north Queensland in the past two seasons, the Tigers kicked three quick goals just before half-time to snatch control of the game.

Daniel Jackson was excellent for the Tigers, kicking two goals and limiting the influence of Suns skipper Gary Ablett. Dustin Martin (31 possessions) was prolific in midfield, if a bit wasteful, and Ricky Petterd played a strong game off half-back.

Gold Coast ruckman Tom Nicholls held his own against Tigers duo Ivan Maric and Tyrone Vickery, while Dion Prestia (27 possessions and a goal), Trent McKenzie and Matt Shaw were among the Suns' best in an even midfield effort.

Sam Day was also useful in the second half, continuing Rory Thompson's good work in keeping Jack Riewoldt goalless after Thompson was forced from the field on a stretcher in the third quarter after a collision with Tiger Matthew Arnot.

Richmond Tigers v Gold Coast Suns at Cazalys

Murray Wenzel
Saturday, July 13, 2013
The Cairns Post

IT wasn't pretty, but it didn't have to be for Richmond as they dealt with a mini-hoodoo and beat the Gold Coast for the first time in Cairns on Saturday night.

The Richmond Tigers ended their horror show in Cairns on Saturday night, but only just in a messy nine-point defeat of the Gold Coast.

In the past two years they have left empty-handed, but despite not playing their best footy the yellow and black could finally smile after a 6.17 (53) to 6.8(44) win.

The Suns missed a kick in the last 40 seconds to make it a three-point game, but in the end it was a brilliant effort from Jack Riewoldt in the right pocket that provided the buffer.

His impact on the rest of the game was minimal though as Dustin Martin (game high 31 disposals), Trent Cotchin (29) and prized recruit Troy Chaplin were rock solid.

Dan Jackson also found the ball 24 times and kept star Sun Gary Ablett relatively quiet (26 touches) in the process to earn massive plaudits.

Riewoldt’s effort was the only real highlight in the final quarter, as goals became a premium in wet and windy conditions.

In fact only four goals were kicked in the second half.

Trent McKenzie, off his non-preferred right boot, gave the Suns the perfect start to the third when he levelled the scores.

But when Rory Thompson was toppled and forced to leave the game via the golf buggy, the heavens opened and the Suns could not not cash in on their wind assistance.

It was messy from then on and the Tigers landed a crucial blow when Jackson snapped a sneaky major of his own to put them ahead.

On the three-quarter time buzzer, Townsville product Josh Hall marked on the same patch of grass Karmichael Hunt did last year, but he could not repeat the dose and they went to the final break down by seven points.

When it was Richmond’s turn to use the breeze in the second term they almost panicked – kicking over their target and struggling to get any clean ball through the midfield.

Five straight behinds only made things worse, before Daniel Jackson threaded the needle to break the worrying sequence.

Soon after a Nathan Foley kick cleared the contest and finally the Tigers had some fortune as it bounced through to make it a two-point game.

A set shot from Brandon Ellis soon after gave them the lead and, after three years, the Tigers finally looked at home in the Far North.

Despite being ahead on the scoreboard at the first break, Richmond could argue they won the quarter after fighting into the trademark four-goal breeze.

The highlight was a Sam Day bomb from on the 50m in the pocket as the Suns controlled possession, but Ablett – after just 14 seconds of play - Jared Brennan and Aaron Hall (twice) all missed golden chances to build a lead.

Port recruit Chaplin was the Tigers’ steady head at the back and at the other end Matt Arnot snapped his first career goal to keep them close.

Richmond clings on to snap its hoodoo against Gold Coast by nine points

    Andrew Hamilton
    From: The Courier-Mail
    July 13, 2013 7:28PM

THE Suns left Cairns with broken hearts and more broken bodies after falling to Richmond by nine points at Cazaly's Stadium.

Defender Rory Thompson was  taken to hospital with internal injuries after a crunching collision with Matthew Arnot midway through the third term of the 6.7 (53) to 6.9 (44) loss.

He had kept his opponent, Richmond superstar Jack Riewoldt goalless in a superb performance to that point.

The Suns’ injury list has reached a critical mass. It is unclear just who will play on Collingwood spearhead Travis Cloke next week.

Vice captain Nathan Bock kicked nine goals in the reserves earlier in the day but Suns officials say he is still only playing at 50 per cent fitness and could not be considered for Saturday’s game against the Pies at Metricon Stadium.

Richmond scored through Daniel Jackson moments after Thompson left the field on a stretcher and then the rain came.

At that was it.

Richmond led by a goal at the time and the Suns never got closer.

It was a superb performance by Jackson who won an engrossing battle with Suns skipper Gary Ablett.

It was the complete taggers game, restricting Ablett to 26 possessions and breaking free to kick two crucial goals himself.

Ablett dispelled any fears his injured calf was still troubling him when he burst out of the centre from the opening bounce of the game and sent a long bomb spiralling toward goal.

It hit the post leaving the fans to ponder what might have been – a familiar sentiment by the end iof the evening.

Once again the Suns lost the game in their attacking fifty – the area of the ground where games should be won.

Nothing separated the two sides in the inside fifty entries –Richmond were just able to make more of the their chances.

However, unlike previous weeks there was no glaring difference between the two sides in marks taken inside fifty which was largely due to a superb performance by the Suns defence.

The inclusion of North Queensland product Josh Hall look like it was going to pay dividends in the opening moments.

The former Olympic high jump hopeful, was brought into the side to provide a badly needed marking option in the forward fifty and he clunked the first high ball that came his way which led to the opening goal of the game to Harley Bennell.

He took another late in the third quarter which led to a shot on goal after the siren but they were his only real moments and he finished the game nursing an injured shoulder.

Fears ran high the game would be a slog when sideways rain swept across the ground 30 minutes before bouncedown but by the time the siren blew there was perfect sunshine.

However there was a strong breeze favouring the Northern end, or as some locals have dubbed it the “Karmichael” end after Hunt’s heroics here last year.

The Suns entered the first break with a two goal lead but coach Guy McKenna would not have been entirely comfortable with the amount of opportunities his side squandered kicking with the breeze.

Bennell, Aaron Hall and Steven May all lost their opponents on the lead only to see the delivery sail wide or over their heads.

After kicking just one goal in the opening quarter, to Arnot, the Tigers managed three in the second through  Jackson, Nathan Foley and Brandon Ellis to lead by a straight kick at half time.

A goal apiece in the second, Jackson’s second for the Tigers and a superb right-footed effort from Trent McKenzie gave the Tigers a seven point lead and the benefit of the breeze in the final quarter.

The Suns needed some magic to pull this one off.

But there was to be no repeat of the stunning finish to last year’s  match when Hunt delivered the season’s most memorable moment with an after the siren shot on goal that handed the Suns a stunning victory.

Talking points: Gold Coast v Richmond

By Nathan Schmook

1. Third time lucky
The Tigers' three-year arrangement to play 'home' games in Cairns has been an unhappy one, but it finally drew premiership points after losses in 2011 and 2012. With 60,000 members who don't want to see another game sold away from the MCG, Richmond's dalliance with Cairns appears over. 11,197 locals voted with their feet, however, and are clearly keen for an annual match in northern Queensland. It is possible another Melbourne club could make the trip north to play a 'home' game against the Suns from next year.

2. Thompson down
Gold Coast key defender Rory Thompson suffered a suspected shoulder injury early in the third quarter when he collided with Richmond midfielder Matthew Arnot. A shining light for the Suns this year, Thompson had kept opponent Jack Riewoldt goalless and to just two marks when injury struck, leaving the ground on a stretcher. The 22-year-old has been a standout in the Suns' backline this year, playing on the opposition's most dangerous forward and holding his own against Nick Riewoldt, Lance Franklin and Tom Hawkins.

3. Beautiful Cairns, ugly footy
The conditions at Cazaly Stadium would have taken some adjusting to for the Tigers and the footy wasn't attractive. A stiff breeze at the open ground favoured the northern 'Karmichael' end and it played a prominent role. Gold Coast won the toss and kicked with the wind, kicking three goals to one with the Tigers flooding back in numbers to limit the damage. Richmond got an identical result in the second quarter before a wet weather slog in the second half with just four goals kicked after the main break as the contest descended in quality.

4. Edwards goes back and Grigg gets the vest
Aaron Edwards has made his name as a lead-up forward and it’s the role he's played since coming into the Richmond line-up. On Saturday night, however, he was sent back, playing on small forward Aaron Hall before he was substituted out of the game at three-quarter time. Starting in the green vest was Shaun Grigg, who seemed a strange choice. The hard running midfielder has averaged 21.9 disposals this season, ranked No.4 at the club. His loss was Matt White's gain, however, with the speedster playing a rare full game.

5. Ablett not shining a good sign for Suns
It's a sign of Gary Ablett's standing that 26 possessions, including five clearances and seven inside 50s, is a quiet night. Daniel Jackson (24, eight clearances and two goals) took the points on Saturday night, but Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna wasn't fussed. "Obviously he didn't stand out … with 30 possessions and three goals like he normally does," the coach said. "I like to think the team's growing up around him. We were competitive today and he doesn't have a good game, I think that's a good sign. We can't just keep expecting him to do everything.

---------------------------------------------------------------

It took Richmond three seasons, but the Tigers have finally scored a win in Cairns. They held off Gold Coast to win by nine points in testing conditions at Cazaly's Stadium on Saturday night.

After three years of selling off their home clash with the Suns, the Tigers finally took some on-field joy from a venture that reportedly gave the club a much-needed financial boost but also cost it humiliating losses in 2011 and 2012.

A goal from Campbell Brown with less than 90 seconds left put the Suns within 10 points, then a set shot from Andrew Boston could have had them within four points with 20 seconds left, but he pulled it wide to allow Richmond to run out the clock.

Tigers ruckman Ivan Maric said the win was a relief for the club, which now looks within sight of a finals berth after notching 10 wins from 15 matches so far this season.

''We got the win, that was all we wanted to do,'' Maric said. ''This game [is] all about how far this group has grown, there was a perception they could beat us, we had to change that today.''

Starting the final term just seven points ahead, the Tigers put on their most convincing quarter of the match by keeping the ball locked in their own attacking end.

But despite having all the football, the Tigers struggled to convert before Jack Riewoldt kicked a left-foot snap from the right pocket to push their lead to 16 points.

Tigers stars Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin, in his 100th game, led their side from the front. Gary Ablett was a constant threat for the Suns, although his opponent, Daniel Jackson, had another good game with 24 touches and two goals.

Gold Coast's Rory Thompson was taken to hospital for scans after a heavy collision with Richmond midfielder Matthew Arnot.

''I think it's his shoulder or his chest, so we'll just wait on the scans,'' coach Guy McKenna said.

''He's gone to hospital and he walked to the car. I think that's a good thing. He's had a super season. At his age and with his experience as a backman, he's stood up under some fierce weight of numbers. With Travis Cloke next week, we'd be pretty keen on a very positive result from the scans, that's for sure.''

The late afternoon sun shone across the ground as play began but that sun was joined by a powerful wind, of which Gold Coast made good use.

With conditions against them, the Tigers looked more like a visiting soccer side rather than the ''home'' team as Troy Chaplin was planted behind the ball as a sweeping loose man, while Arnot was sent to half-forward, but clearly man-marking dangerous Sun Trent McKenzie.

Harley Bennell opened his side's account with a goal as the Suns pressured the Tigers who continually pushed the ball down the wing and rarely looked in position to attack.

Arnot kicked the Tigers' first goal with a neat finish but Matt Shaw responded quickly for the Suns with a well-taken 50-metre goal.

Tigers defender Matt White made a costly error when he cannoned into Brown after he kicked the ball from the defensive part of the right wing. Brown's kick floated into the forward 50 and was ruled a down-field free kick and subsequent goal to Suns forward Sam Day.

The Suns went into quarter-time up by 12 points but the Tigers looked content with the result heading into a wind-assisted second term.

But the Tigers could not warm to their home away from home and could well have given up two goals against the wind but for poor kicking from the Suns.

Indeed, it wasn't until the last eight minutes of the term that the Tigers kicked their first goal with the wind as Jackson converted a set shot.

PARKING THE BUS

With the wind howling towards one end, both sides went shamelessly to defensive tactics when kicking against the wind in the first half. The Tigers played Troy Chaplin behind the ball as a loose man while Matt Arnot was named at half-forward but clearly tagging long-kicking half-back Trent McKenzie. In the second term the Tigers struggled to adjust to a more aggressive mindset while the Suns pushed up to 16 players inside the defensive 50-metre line. The result was a low-scoring first half. This was not the spectacle the AFL needs to win more fans in Queensland.

UGLY INJURY

Gold Coast defender Rory Thompson is highly regarded as an emerging star but his match ended in the third term when he came off second best in a collision with Arnot. The muscular first-year player bumped into Thompson, with his shoulder pushing Thompson's elbow into his ribs. The Suns player was substituted with a suspected rib injury. The Tigers wasted no time in going to Jack Riewoldt and while he didn't take a mark, that kick led to a Daniel Jackson goal.

A-GRADERS ALL-ROUND

While Cairns is not the MCG, the A-grade midfielders on both sides showed their quality in trying conditions, with Gary Ablett constantly a threat and Jaeger O'Meara turning on some impressive moves. For the Tigers, captain Trent Cotchin was relentless in his ball-winning, while Dustin Martin showed the work-rate and driven play which the Tigers need from him. In years to come these duos could well face off in some memorable finals matches. Cotchin and O'Meara were matched up for parts of the match. It was one of the few attacking moves on the day.

Poorly worded passage.

Agree it was poor but you'd assume people would know what he means
you would assume that someone that is paid to write for a living would structure their sentences in a manner that clearly conveys what they actually mean.

But then again, assumption is the mother of all stuffups.

Its annoying when someone writes something different to what they mean and we are expected to decipher it. we may as well revert back to grunts, hand signals and cave paintings

Most basic mistake of journalism.  If you don't convey your exact meaning then it will always get misread or misconstrued by many readers and then there becomes no point to making the statement in the first place.
