Dragons, Falcons dominate draft combine list

THE SANDRINGHAM Dragons will have seven players attend October's NAB AFL Draft Combine, with the possibility of four being top-25 draft selections.

Midfielders Josh Kelly, Christian Salem, Nathan Freeman and Zach Merrett all loom as early picks at November's NAB AFL Draft for the Dragons, while Karl Amon, Alex Spencer and Tom Langdon have also been invited to the combine.

Langdon attended last year's testing at Etihad Stadium but was overlooked at the draft.

The Dragons picked him to play as a 19-year-old this season and he has impressed off half-back. He has also stepped up to play four VFL games for Sandringham.

The Geelong Falcons will be the other best-represented club at the week-long testing, with seven players invited to the combine.

Speedy midfielder Lewis Taylor is in contention to be a top-10 draft pick, and other Falcons Nick Bourke, Aaron Christensen, Fraser Fort, Darcy Gardiner, Darcy Lang and James Tsitas will be hoping to impress recruiters.

Fresh from its division two title at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, Tasmania has had seven players invited to the national combine.

Kade Kolodjashnij and Toby Nankervis were All-Australian selections, and Jake Kolodjashnij, Brady Grey, Alex Pearce, Eli Templeton and Zac Webster all showed impressive signs throughout the carnival.

Dayle Garlett will get a shot at draft redemption after being invited back to the combine. Garlett's off-field issues saw clubs too concerned to pick him last year, but the talented West Australian has had a terrific season at WAFL level for Swan Districts.

The combine offers players outside the under-18 system to be ranked and assessed by clubs.

Four VFL players will attend, with Port Melbourne's Chris Cain the oldest of this year's group. Cain recently turned 26 and has played 14 games for the club this year, kicking 22 goals.

Of the 98 players to be invited, 14 are indigenous.

A further 85 players will be notified this week of their invitation to a state draft combine.

Kade Kolodjashnij jumps up draft order

Callum Twomey

TASMANIAN prospect Kade Kolodjashnij is the early star of the NAB AFL Draft Combine, showing his talents in the jump testing.

The half-back flanker and wingman, who played a starring role for Tasmania through the NAB AFL under-18 Championships, led the way in Monday's standing vertical jump test.

Kolodjashnij, who is projected to be a top-10 selection next month, had a 79cm vertical relative jump.

He beat fellow Tasmanian Brady Grey (76cm), Queenslander Fraser Thurlow (75cm), and West Australian Tom Vandeleur (72cm).

Kolodjashnij was also the standout in the running vertical jump off the right leg, jumping 97cm.

The AFL's academies development manager Michael Ablett said it demonstrated Kolodjashnij's surge up the draft order.

"He's just gone from strength to strength," Ablett told AFL.com.au.

"We've seen his footy continually improve throughout the year. We saw what he did earlier in the year, particularly at the AIS-AFL Academy's January camp and could see what an exciting athlete he was.

"But to actually get confirmed figures and that solid data on him now, it just backs up his football ability. Complemented by his athletic ability, I think it pushes him right up amongst the best kids in the country."

Queenslander Archie Smith, who had the best running vertical jump on the left leg, matched Kolodjashnij's leap of 97cm.

Smith is a recent convert to the AFL, having previously played basketball. His father, Andre Moore, was a former NBL star with the Brisbane Bullets.

The 200cm prospect is a member of the Brisbane Lions Academy, which means the club has bidding rights over him when the clubs meet next week.

Like the rules for the father-son bidding system, if no club bids for Smith the Lions can automatically list him with their last draft pick. If another club does place a bid for the 18-year-old, the Lions can choose to match it.

"There's no doubt he's a first-choice athlete. Brisbane are obviously very excited about having him and he's one who's showed solid improvement throughout the year," Ablett said.

Freeman, Marsh dominate sprint tests

Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
October 3, 2013

JONATHON Marsh and Nathan Freeman were the standouts of day two at the NAB AFL Draft Combine, blitzing the field in the sprint tests.

Marsh, a powerful and explosive 192cm forward, ran 2.78 seconds in the 20-metre sprint test. It was the second fastest run in combine history, only behind Joel Wilkinson's 2.75 second effort in 2010.

The 17-year-old West Australian again impressed later in the day, when he scored the third-best time in the repeat sprints test, which sees players do six 30-metre sprints back-to-back.

Freeman showed his burst ability in that test by claiming top honours, running 23.62 seconds for the six sprints.

It followed his second placing in the 20-metre sprint, where the Victorian midfielder ran 2.81 to finish behind Marsh.

Freeman pushed himself further into top-10 draft calculations with his test, confirming him as the midfielder with the most pace at the top end of this year's pool.

Darcy Byrne-Jones, from the Oakleigh Chargers, came second in the repeat sprints, with a time of 24.06 seconds.

Irishman Daniel Flynn, who AFL.com.au reported on Wednesday had a number of clubs interested in signing him, also showcased his athletic potential.

Flynn was third in the 20-metre sprint with a time of 2.83 seconds, was fourth in the repeat sprints (24.25 seconds), and second in the agility test with 8.08 seconds.

Breaking the eight-second barrier to win the agility test was Tasmanian midfielder Zac Webster, who ran 7.97 seconds.

A notable presence inside the top-10 of the agility test was Ben Brown, with the mature-age ruckman/forward running a time of 8.29 seconds.

Combine attendees continue to impress with results

JOSH Kelly has won the final event at this year's NAB AFL Draft Combine, running the second-fastest three-kilometre time trial in the testing's 20-year history.

Kelly won the run last year when competing for a place in the Greater Western Sydney mini-draft, and backed up just over a month before this year’s draft, completeing the run in nine minutes and 32 seconds.

The best time in combine testing is nine minutes and 30 seconds, by former Port Adelaide rookie Tom Rieschbieth in 2005.

The 18-year-old Kelly surpassed his time of last year by 16 seconds, and again underlined himself as an early pick on November 21 when the draft takes place at the Gold Coast.

"I had the advantage of a few weeks of training under my belt and I was hoping to get a bit of a PB (personal best)," Kelly said after the run.

"I'm pretty happy with it. It's a good way to end the camp, it's been a lot of fun this week."

West Australian Nick Robertson ran nine minutes and 46 seconds, which was followed by Collingwood father-son prospect Jake Kelly, who ran nine minutes and 51 seconds.

Robertson and Jake Kelly were also inside the top 10 results of combine testing.

The AFL's national talent manager Kevin Sheehan said Josh Kelly's effort had ended a strong week at Etihad Stadium.

"The game's in great hands when young men, like the 111 we've seen here in the past four days, present themselves in such fantastic condition and all bright-eyed and looking forward to getting a chance in the AFL," Sheehan said.

"I think [Josh Kelly] is an extraordinary young talent as a player, and now you see him as an elite athlete. He ticks every box and on top of that he's just such a coachable young man."

On Monday at 10am, clubs will take part in the father-son bidding process after North Melbourne nominated Luke McDonald as a father-son draftee.

The son of former Kangaroos big man Donald, McDonald is likely to cost the club its first-round selection (pick eight).

The skillful half-back is widely seen as one of the best five or six players in this year's draft pool.

As reported by AFL.com.au this week, Collingwood has nominated Jake Kelly as a provisional father-son pre-selection pick for the rookie draft.

It means that if the son of former Magpies defender Craig does not get picked in the NAB AFL Draft, the Magpies can choose to automatically list him ahead of the rookie draft.

The same will happen for Ryan Lester-Smith, son of Neil, at Fremantle, having been nominated as a rookie father-son pick by the Dockers.

The Brisbane Lions nominated academy player Jonathan Freeman, under rules giving them first access on players developed out of their home state.

But he falls under the same bidding process as McDonald, and if another club bids for him the Lions have the option of matching the bid.
