RICHMOND is gearing up for September in style, obliterating Greater Western Sydney by 121 points in a disappointing penultimate AFL match for Giants coach Kevin Sheedy.
 
Eleven goals to one point in the second term put the Tigers on the path to a 25.13 (163) to 6.6 (42) victory that elevates them back above Collingwood and Essendon and into fifth place on the AFL ladder.
 
The subsequent percentage boost means Richmond is likely to sew up a home final for its first post-season appearance in 12 years if it can knock off the Bombers at the MCG next Saturday night.

Naturally for such a one-sided afternoon, the Tigers had winners all over the ground, led by Reece Conca, Dustin Martin and Shaun Grigg, while Aaron Edwards (five goals) was among 12 Richmond goalkickers.
 
Taylor Adams, Tom Scully and Dylan Shiel had the odd highlight for the home side, but it was a record-breaking day for the Tigers.
 
An 80-point half-time lead was the club's highest since building a 107-point advantage over North Melbourne in round two, 1931.
 
That match also marked club legend Jack Dyer's first for the club.
 
The 11.5 kicked in the second term was Richmond's highest-scoring quarter since producing 11.7(73) in Fitzroy's final ever game in 1996 and the equal-sixth highest score in any quarter in Tiger history.
 
Current leader Jarryd Roughead is firming as this year's likely Coleman medallist, with GWS spearhead Jeremy Cameron totally blanketed by Alex Rance, managing just one effort out on the full in the game's first minute.
 
That leaves him stuck on 60 goals ahead of next week's trip to the Gold Coast, while Jack Riewoldt kicked one on Saturday to move to 57 for the year.
 
After Sheedy entered the field via a guard of honour and a pyrotechnic display for his final home match after almost 50 years and seven premierships as a player and coach, the two teams had a competitive opening term.
 
GWS kicked the game's first goal through debutant Kristian Jaksch, but Richmond kicked four of the next five until Liam Sumner's late effort made it a 10-point game at quarter-time.
 
As competitive as the first quarter was, however, the second was about as one-sided as it gets.
 
Edwards kicked two goals in the opening five minutes, sparking an absolute avalanche that didn't let up for the rest of the term.
 
From that point on the record books were the Tigers' only opponents in a meek final home match for the Giants in 2013, who also lost Sumner to a suspected Achilles tendon injury.
 
The 12,314 in attendance also marked a Skoda Stadium record.

They came to farewell Kevin Sheedy and to see Jeremy Cameron edge closer to what Andrew Demetriou believed would be the ''most significant'' Coleman Medal win ever. But they left with 121 reasons to think again about coming back.

Sheedy's final game in Sydney and the Giants' last at home this season turned into a goal blitz for his former club, Richmond, a fortnight out from the Tigers' first finals appearance since 2001.

In a minor victory for the Giants, the fledgling club set a record crowd of 12,314 at at Skoda Stadium but, other than a touching moment when Sheedy was given a guard of honour by both sides after the game, Greater Western Sydney fans would not have been overly enamoured with what they saw.

The 121-point drubbing followed losses of 113 and 60 points since the club's drought-breaking victory against Melbourne three weeks ago, and based on Sunday's performance the end of the season cannot come soon enough.

Cameron has usually been able to provide a highlight for the club in heavy defeats but the young gun endured a torrid day at the office.

Not only did he have to contend with Alex Rance, who is a leading contender to be an All-Australian defender this year, he generally had a second defender, usually Troy Chaplin, double-teaming him.

He was held goalless for the first time in the season and scoreless for the first time since round three last year. His only shot at goal was a long bomb in the opening minutes, which dribbled out of bounds - one of only two possessions for the day.

It was far from the 10-goal haul Demetriou had been dreaming of at the Giants' pre-game function.

His empty bag left him marooned on 60 goals in equal third place with West Coast's Josh Kennedy, four behind leader Jarryd Roughead on 64 and Travis Cloke on 61.

Cameron's woes characterised those of his team, which was handed a football clinic by Richmond.

After a relatively close first term, the Tigers applied the blowtorch to the Giants, booting 14 unanswered goals, including 11 in the second quarter.

The Tigers' effort of 11.5 in the second term was their biggest score in a quarter since they kicked 11.7 against Fitzroy in 1996 in that club's final game.

The Giants, with only 47 tackles despite having the ball on 106 fewer occasions, could find no way to pressure the Tigers, who launched plenty of counter-attacks from Chaplin, their spare man in attack.

The Giants had no clear winner on the ground although the tenacious Taylor Adams, with 23 possessions, and Phil Davis were among the better players.

RICHMOND rolled to a 121-point victory against GWS in a game that was the antithesis of finals football.

Not since Fitzroy's penultimate game, a 151-point loss to the Tigers in 1996, has Richmond destroyed a team in such a ruthless fashion.

Coming off an upset loss to Carlton, the visitors made as big a statement as they could have against a young side that, like the Lions in 1996, look destined to finish the season with one win.

Aaron Edwards booted five goals for Richmond, who had 12 different goalscorers, while Dustin Martin had a game-high 33 disposals.

Richmond's percentage was given a timely boost ahead of their first finals campaign in 12 years, rising from 114.6 to 121.4 ahead of Saturday night's final-round clash against Essendon.

Coach Damien Hardwick said he wasn't doing the maths on what the result meant but welcomed the margin.

"I try not to think too much about percentage as a coach you just want to come away with the four points, where it puts us in the finals race I'm not too sure but it will certainly come in handy. Whatever helps us get a home final is a good result," he said.

He said there were still areas for improvement in the Tigers' game.

"Last week we were really disappointed the way we founded out but we've sort of gone through a phase of training that was a little bit tougher, we freshened them up a bit this week and we'll give them another light week this week."

He said skipper Trent Cotchin, who was subbed off in the third quarter, was given a rest and wasn't injured.

The Tigers claimed fifth spot on the ladder in the process, overtaking Collingwood and the Bombers. It was Richmond's sixth biggest winning margin in its history and the biggest since the Tigers put Fitzroy to the sword in its second-last game in 1996

Midfield/fowards Reece Conca and Brandon Ellis kicked three each but Jack Riewoldt could manage just one, a dribbled snap on his left foot, after playing with heavy strapping on his knee.

Fellow Coleman Medal contender Jeremy Cameron fared even worse, held to just two kicks - both in the first quarter and both ineffective - by Alex Rance.

The Tigers blew the game apart in a barnstorming second quarter, when they piled on 11.5 while the Giants could manage just one behind. It was just nine points shy of the highest-scoring quarter in Richmond's 105-year history.

There were few signs in the first quarter of the shellacking ahead.

GWS debutant Kristian Jaksch kicked the opening goal with his first AFL kick and Liam Sumner slotted a major on the stroke of quarter-time to reduce the Tigers' lead to 10 points at the first break.

The Giants' next goal wouldn't come until the eighth minute of the third term, with Richmond piling on 89 points in-between.

Far too many of Richmond's 14 consecutive goals resembled training drills, with loose men everywhere queuing up to get their name on the scoreboard.

Injured spearhead Jack Riewoldt dished off three goals and kicked one himself in the rot, while Edwards had already booted 4.2 by halftime.

The Giants found some resolve after halftime and stemmed the bleeding, while Tigers coach Damien Hardwick substituted captain Trent Cotchin out of the game in the third quarter.

The floodgates opened again in the final term.

With GWS away to Gold Coast in the last game of Kevin Sheedy's 29th VFL-AFL season as head coach, the match was heavily promoted as the four-time premiership mentor's Sydney swansong.

The Giants at least had a win in this regard, drawing a record Skoda Stadium crowd of 12,314 to the match.

Officials and players from both GWS and Richmond formed a guard of honour for Sheedy at the end of the match.
