Now that the season is over who do we get rid of?
« on: September 02, 2013, 01:03:02 AM »
Well it's that time of year again. Round 23 has been and gone and it's time for the off-season. Who do we get rid of and what's your wishlist?

Tigs, TBH I've opened a couple of these threads disappointed in you. I keep thinking there's no way you will get a nibble but some of these fish just jump right on the hook. It's outrageous

Okay I'll bite.

Who'll get cut will depend on who is and isn't still contracted, how many rookies we promote and what draft picks we'll end up with.

Out of contract: Arnot, Batchelor, Conca, Dea, Derickx, A.Edwards, Elton, Griffiths, Helbig, I.Maric, Martin, McGuane, Nahas, O'Hanlon, Tuck, White

Rookies:
Ben Darrou (rookie - 2nd year)
Steven Verrier (rookie - 2nd year)
Ricky Petterd (rookie - 1st year)
Sam Lonergan (rookie - 1st year)
Orren Stephenson (rookie - 1st year)
Cadeyn Williams (rookie - 1st year)
Gideon Simon (international rookie - 1st year)

Word here on OER is that Petterd will be promoted to the senior list.
I would say the Big O will be kept on as a rookie as a back-up ruck.
Lonergan you would think will be cut.
Verrier and Darrou's futures would be up in the air as well given they've been on our rookie list for two years and have yet looked like getting a senior game.

Finishing fifth means we'll most likely end up with picks 14, 32, 50, 68, etc ... Assuming we are able to trade for another 2nd/3rd round pick we'll probably only use 4-5 picks in the draft this year. So that's only 4-5 changes to our senior list and possibly topping up our rookie list with another mature recycled player(s) from another club.

So I would say definitely going are:
Tuck (retiring)
McGuane (trade)
Nahas (delist)
Derickx (delist)
Lonergan# (delist)

In the gun too: Dea, Helbig, O'Hanlon, Darrou#, Verrier# and it won't surprise me if only one of Elton or Griffiths will be still at Punt Rd next year.

Even though I was only joking with the thread and I haven't given it much thought MT seems pretty close.

Of the rookies you have in maybe I think Verrier will go and Darrou will get one more.
Griff likely gets traded.
McGuane can leave as FA or get delisted. I think the last 2 weeks Azza Edwards lead-up style is more what we need. Both are similar level players but McGuane isn't a great fit as he gets in Jack's way and clogs the forward line.

Our best team as it stands is something close to the following in the eyes of the coach:

Chaplin. Grimes. Morris.
Vlastuin. Rance. Houli.
Grigg. Cotchin. Jackson.
Ellis. Vickery. Conca.
A. Edwards. Riewoldt. S. Edwards.
Maric. Deledio. Martin.
King. White. Newman.
 + Foley.

IMO, we should be a) looking at replacing players who will retire  b) improving on the weakest links.

Richmond VFL:
Astbury. Darrou. Bachelor.
Pettard. McIntosh. Dea.
Williams. Arnot. Ohanlon.
Knights. Elton. McDonut.
McBean. Griffiths. Simon.
Derickx. Helbig. Nahas.
Longrgan. McGaune. Verrier. Orren

Delist/retire/trade
Tuck
Mcgaune
Lonergan
Nahas
Maybe Verrier and Orren also.

Massive trade / draft - could make finals every season for a while if we continue to improve the 22 + depth

Verrier and Darrou's futures would be up in the air as well given they've been on our rookie list for two years and have yet looked like getting a senior game.

In the gun too: Dea, Helbig, O'Hanlon, Darrou#, Verrier# and it won't surprise me if only one of Elton or Griffiths will be still at Punt Rd next year.

# - rookie

Darrou has shown a bit. I would like to give the younger types another season with the stand alone VFL side. McBean, Elton, Griffiths is a promising forward structure. Astbury, McIntosh, darrou back. Derickx is playing well and was a project player. The mids types also would be good to watch: Helbig, Dea, Williams etc. Should be flushing out the older / mid age before culling the recently drafted prospects That said it looks like dimma is happy topping up now

Of the rookies you have in maybe I think Verrier will go and Darrou will get one more.
Griff likely gets traded.

Not sure Verrier kicking is good enough to stay on the list.

All season our weakest 'link in the chain' has been (i think) the third tall forward position. Aaron Edwards is in good form but too old to be int he clubs long term plans. It would be a shame to see Griffiths come good at another club given our forward line situation.

really is a no brainer. we need to do at least 5 from the list proper and theres 4 that are probably gone anyway. just need to make a decision on one or two.
would look to cut 3 rookies  for a total of 8 as a minimum.

4nd picks 1f/a or trade 3 rookies 2 mature .

gone
derickx - ruckman. we need to do a like for like and take a ruckman if not two.
mcguane - tall forward.  would again be looking for a like for like. a jack gunston type for me.
tuck - retired would be looking for a like for like big inside mid with better skills.
nahas - for/mid. would be happy to target like for like again. must have pace some good size for a small and excellent skills and smarts.
king - yep people will howl about this one should be replaced with a good sized pacey mid.
theres probably 6 seniors id lump in with kingy.cant do em all in one go so wont name em. while like kingy they are good clubmen and servicable at times and have probably done enough to keep their spots for the short term we do need to be looking for better.

rookies. well as many as 4 depending on what we do about getting a ruckman.

petterd - shocking skills and we have enough who can play thru the hb line.
verrier - see petterd.
lonergan - slow cant kick cant find the ball at afl level just so many weaknesses.
stephenson - depending on what we do in the ruck area.

hanging on by a thread and would not surprise if one or two   were cut.
bachelor -  geez he an inbetweener. to short to play tall to slow and unclean to play sml.
dea - a medium defender again we have this area covered. hes in what yr 4 and struggled to establish himself.
ohanlon - probably safe but there are some issues.pace one of them.
knights - gotta ask about his durability. hes no good to anyone if hes perennially injured.
griffiths - fair enough hes had injuries but this lad has done next to nothing in 4 yrs the clock is ticking. it may be they will make a decision one way or the other on him.
helbig. - i love this kid but at what point do we insist he step up and show he at least belongs at the level.
