June 25, 2014 10:09PMRICHMOND forward Jake King is still consorting with ex-bikie hard man Toby Mitchell despite being urged to sever the association.
Mitchell has posted on social media pictures of himself and other mates with King at fight nights this month and in the MCG stands watching the Tigers.
Former AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou strongly urged Richmond management to persuade King to sever his association with Mitchell, who appears to be expanding his business horizons following his resignation from the Bandidos motorcycle club.
The former bikie’s claims to have opened a tattoo shop in South Melbourne, City of Ink; however, company documents do not link Mitchell to the business name.
Mitchell has posted a video of himself getting an elaborate head tattoo and also promoting the shop.
And the ex-bikie, recovering from six bullet wounds, also believes he is fighting fit and is contemplating a farewell bout after seven years out of the ring.
King, who is unlikely to be offered another contract by the Tigers after an injury-plagued season, has appeared with Mitchell at fight nights, including at Melbourne Pavilion in Flemington last weekend.
The event was promoted by Powerplay, a business of which Mitchell was previously a director.
Richmond has declined to comment, saying it has made its position clear to King, who is not to bring Mitchell to official club events.
But club management has baulked at banning the forward from associating with Mitchell or sanctioning him for his off-field associations.
In March this year, Mitchell avoided jail over a vicious affray at a King St nightclub in 2010.
A magistrate wholly suspended a four-month prison term for a year after taking into account Mitchell’s ill health and fears he could become a target in prison.
At some of the proceedings, Mitchell used a walking stick, his lawyers citing his ailing health from two shootings as a reason to spare him from prison time.
Less than four months later, Mitchell is again living the high-life.
While serving his suspended sentence, Mitchell has posted pictures of himself enjoying a recent trip to Thailand, showing off numerous American muscle cars at his disposal, and even brags his favoured car, a Commodore Senator, was due to be impounded this week under anti-hoon laws.
Earlier this month he was photographed walking out of The Botanical restaurant in South Yarra with controversial biochemist and convicted drug trafficker Shane Charter, who is a key witness in the Essendon supplement scandal.
Charter is currently under investigation by the Victoria Police Purana taskforce in relation to peptide supply or trafficking.
This month he told the Herald Sun he had been treating Mitchell, who has been using “non-traditional and cutting-edge treatment’’, to help him recover from a shooting.
“He is probably now in the best shape of his life and could go 10 rounds,’’ Charter said.
Mitchell was shot five times in November 2011, outside Doherty’s Gym in Brunswick by gunman yet to be charged.
He was also shot during an ambush by Hells Angels outside the Diablos clubhouse in Melton in March 2013.
