Disappointing end but darn good season with a relative young side still

Disappointd in all the Dr's on the forum that didn't hang around for the good times this year

gave it a 9.

Finishing 5th was more than I expected. To lose in our 1st final was very disappointing especially to the cheats, but in hindsight that will probably be a good kick up the backside and will hurt more over preseason than if we had of won a final.

Most impressive was ALL of our top liners played below their best this season and we still improved significantly.

Massive off season coming up, hope we draft in a few more young mids, get an Adams or Longer type and keep improving as our young players get multiple preseasons under their belts

8. -1 for the way we lost the final, wish we could of at least gone down swinging.
-1 for a couple of pathetic losses throughout the year
Other than that, we finished 5th with some great wins, a healthy percentage (best in years) and made the finals for the 1st time in 12 years, deserve a good rating.

Who's the nob that said 5  :lol (Looking at Tiga)

How did you rate our season all up?

5

What went right?

West Coast, Adelaide, Fremantle were underdone when we played them. Played St Kilda and Western Bulldogs twice for easy wins.
Essendon offically a disgrace of a Football club.

What went wrong?

Game plan. Can not play four quarters against "good" teams. Hardwick has no Plan B. We have been exposed to our lack of run and carry from our midfield and have a disfunctional forward line thanks to the hopeless Mark Williams (not Choco). Our midfield provides no support for our defence.

Who surprised/stepped up this year?

Daniel Jackson
Brandon Ellis
Nick Vlastuin
Recee Conca
Matthew White
Steven Morris

Who disappointed?

Brett Deledio
Shaun Grigg
Jake King
Shane Edwards

Which coaching staff needs to go?

Mark Williams (Forward Coach: Danny Daly to go back into that role ASAP!)

Who needs GAME TIME to prove he belongs in the AFL?

Ben Griffiths
Liam McBean

gave it an 8.
couldnt  give it any less considering i thought finals only a slim chance and a big bonus if we did get there. so basically an 8 for the win loss column.

clearly there is plenty wrong and lots of work improvement needed.

I rated it 6 out of 10. Had a few blow out losses that we should not have had....

Right - When we took sides on it went right!!

Wrong - When we tried to play tempo footy it went wrong!!

Surprise - Jacko

Stepped Up - Bachar

Disappointed - Grimesy's injury, would have liked Titch in the forward line, only goals this year.

Tommy Hafey - "There's nothing more tiger-ish than a bloody tiger, a wounded tiger''

It's an 8.

3 big positives for me.

Development of younger players - while not complete - is now tangible and materially helping the total team playing better football. The recruiting of our young talent is now having impact - each 1st round draft pick since 2006 is playing an important role in our starting 18, we've never had that since drafting began.

Players putting their role in the team ahead of individual contribution. It is still a work in progress but this is an aspect of our game which has improved.
IMV, the fact that we do not have any AA players is a positive because we are getting a good spread of contributors.

Defence conceding 3rd least points is significant. We keep this up and we play finals again. A great team effort overall and like them or not - Rance and Chaplain are the lynchpins with Stevie M and Bacher also making great contributions.

In terms of improvement for next year, I'd like to see our on field leaders get the team to lock down the game more effectively when the opposition kicks multiple goals. We are too susceptible to leaking 5 or more goals in quick succession.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

7/10

Right:
Showed our best football is very good. Some comprehensive wins against better-favoured teams, defence was fantastic, better spread of workload in the midfield and finishing 5th overall was great.

Wrong:
Forward line not looking potent enough. Jack whinging and an otherwise seriously bad lack of a power forward and a genuinely talented small forward. Must address this ASAP. Fortunately the midfield chipped in regularly to cover this deficit.

Impressed:
Ellis for running so hard, taking marks, making space and good kicking
Vlastuin for being a tough nut and his rebounding
Jackson for vindicating me because I like him as a player lol
Chaplin for being awesome usually
Morris for being awesome usually
Rance for being awesome usually except final VS Carlton and round 4
Houli had a great year IMO
Whitey also for vindicating me for my belief he can take it up a level

Disappointed:
Martin for allowing this contract poo to go all stuffing season basically.
Petterd for being weak/panicking/selfish/Dimma's fave
Deledio for still not shaking tags
Riewoldt for still sooking and not getting on with the job
Vickery for having a weak first half to the season. Redeemed himself somewhat
S Edwards for being a hack. Have never rated his 'elite skills'
Foley at times for butchering the ball but at least he's tough/brave
Grigg as usual for being soft and shirking the issue

Must fix:
Players must get fitter
Players must get stronger
No more skinny kids/pussies - tough people only
POWER FORWARD - been saying it all year. Somebody 190+ and 105kg or more
Another ruck - been saying all year we should chase Robbie Warnock.
A champion midfielder - the like of Judd/Goddard/Selwood who just refuse to accept defeat.
Contracts - stay firm. No paying overs

All our players need to watch a tape of the Swans game last night.  Their gut running with two players down was simply outstanding. Unless our guys are willing to put that sort of effort in week in week out then they are a waste of space. Show ponies (most will know who fall into this category) are not going to win premierships and the faster they are made aware of this (or traded/delisted) the better.

One word, amazing :shh
reckon this is aimed at me.
amazing not really. if iwas to say we overachieved id be accused of being bitter or some such.
its simple i rate the list and still do despite 15 wins this yr as a list that is around 10th.  yet we finished 5th how the hell do you criticise that.

i tell ya what bo i will bet we dont make the 8 next yr you bet we do. ive got another 50 bucks to go to the club if i lose.

just ask north wins in this competition dont mean a lot the next yr. yes we won 15 games next yr being honest we could win only 10 and play just as well.
theres so many areas of the list that we have to work on and if we fail well you have gone thru the last 30 yrs you know what happens.

the 9th placed side yes lets be honest carlton were the 9th placed side and they showed up the usual weaknesses in a big game.
reality says as well as they played at times this yr the likes of jackson king white grigg etc etc etc will not get us where we want to get.

personally i want to see a tun over of 10 all up it really isnt asking much.

On one hand you tell us that the deeper you go into the draft, the harder it becomes to get quality, which is pretty obvious really, and that ii trading you have to give up quality to get quality, which again is correct.

Then, you turn around and say you want to get rid of 10 of the list ( aprox 1/4).

so how do you envisage replacing 10 blokes with upgrades in one hit?, considering these two points of yours?
surely you cant be expecting us to get 5 or 6 free agents?

I cracked up when he said to trade Vickers for pick 1 after he has put the boots into him all year

oh dear wasnt i arguing that we need to use 3rd round picks. amazing how you can take one comment and place it out of context.yes the very obvious comment was made that it gets harder to find good players the later the draft  but the 3rd round was worth staying in.  i think i said it was fraught with danger to forgo 3rd rnd picks as some wee espousing.
geez it seems im going to have to keep things real simple when commening around here.

we use 4 nd picks 11, 28, 46, 64,id like us to trade into an earlier one if possible a pick from 20 to 30 would be ideal.  we will use three nd picks no matter what.
the nd is obviously all about developing players and looking to the long term.
every club will use  possibly 4 nd picks or take a minimum 4 juniors one way or another. it aint hard to see or figure.

to use those 4 nd picks we will do what is obvious delist/trade/retire the following
tuck - retired
nahas -  hack
derickx - has to be gone.
mcguane - another long term hack. what do we lose if we are honest absolutely nothing.

then once again do what we have done in the past target a f/a plus  try to do a trade. and ffs this time around look at some of the very good state league players running around. easy enough to find two decent players this way.
so thats two more from the list proper take your pick theres an awful lot who to date have done nothing or are very limited
king, white griffiths, dea helbig batchelor edwards ohanlon must all be very much under pressure to keep their spots.

thats 6 how hard would it be to cut rookies like
petterd -  bloody hell what a hack.
verrier  - cant kick,
sam lonergan -  is clearly not up to afl standard with pace skills and decion making hes another hack.
stephenson - if we get a decent back up onto the list.

mate dont kid yourself all up we could easily cut 8 or 10 players and not blink.
ask yourself apart from the odd game what real contribution did any of the players mentioned above make to our season. simply put we have to be better than them
