Ryan Crowley type
« on: September 15, 2013, 08:24:40 AM »
Does anyone else think we could do with a 'Ryan Crowley' type stopper?

Love him or hate him, he is as important to Freeo as the Big Pav.

Wouldn't it be nice to go into a game, say against Collingwood and know Swan or Pendlebury will not have an impact. Or Geelong and know Stevie J may as well take a shower early. They essentially go in to the game a player short, so do we but is not our best player.   The good clubs do it to us.

I know we have Jackson but to have someone like Crowley who's only objective for the day is to stop his man is a little different than our Jackson. IMO his job is to start tight at stoppages but then his mindset is to be a bit more attacking. Especially this year.

To me it seems in the big games someone always gets off the leash and tears us a new one.

Do we have someone at the club who could do the job??

Every club wants a player like that.

We have NOBODY like him. Needs to be fit, strong and bloody tough as nails. Gets into their head.

He's the best since Ling surely.

Not sure who / how we could get a player like this for next season. McKenzie from Melbourne goes alright too and is a little less talked about then some of the others.

The old Tiger teams had 10 Crowleys.

we have one in morris  but hes needed down back because blokes like houli are poor defensively and always have been.
play steve morris as a run with mid try and find a sml med defender who can perform his role id start by trying helbig in the role and if that fails try someone else.

if you play in defense no matter the role you must be able to defend first and foremost. sreve morris does this well but ya know what hes limited his skills mean he will always be nothing but a shut down player. some one like helbig could be a lot more.

Instead of shifting half the team around (don't move players into different positions remember?) why not just try Helbig in the role?
Helbig could be a lot more but you want him to do a shut down role in defense why?

Because his skills are better than Morris and would be better for rebounding.

Morris is solid but not the cleanest disposer from time to time. He could be a great tagger and inside midfielder, then just dish it out to the bystanders like Lids.

Helbigs skills aren't crash hot, pretty average whenever I've watched. I'd leave Morris where he is, it's taken us years to find a quality shutdown defender, they don't grow on trees.

Helbig was an inside mid pre draft. I'd give him a crack as he's aggressive, big size  and knows how to play midfield. Other than that, I don't see anyone else on our list tbh.
