How did we rate Richmond's trade/free agency period?
« on: October 25, 2013, 03:58:51 PM »
Okay we've had two hours or so plus 3 weeks :boredom  ;D. How did we all rate Richmond's trade/free agency period?

-----------------------------

Trade completed: Shaun Hampson for pick 32

In: Hampson

Out: Pick 32, White (free agent), McGuane (free agent)

-----------------------------

Barrett and the other bloke on the AFL website were surprisingly positive. I believe they gave us a B.

Barrett said Richmond paid slightly overs for Hampson but in the end they got their man which is all you can ask for and he'll be a good pick-up. Over recent years Richmond has recruited well when they knew and targeted what they wanted and got the deal done early.

AFL website's trade period rankings (Barrett and co.):

Carlton     A
St Kilda    A
Coll'wood   A-
Essendon    A-(?) (taking into account they had no picks in the first two rounds)
Hawthorn    B+
Fremantle   B
North       B
Richmond  B(?)
Bulldogs    B-
Geelong     C
West Coast C
Brisbane    C-
GWS         D
Melbourne   D

Missed: Adel, GC, Port, Syd.

Our biggest coup was re-signing Conc's and Dusty. People seem to forget that. I'm happy with B

GWS and Melbourne get a 'D' ?   I thought they didn't do too badly. GWS added some experience and Melbourne got Tyson.

Trade bounty: your club's new recruits from the 2013 exchange period

Mark Macgugan, Ashley Browne and Adam McNicol
afl.com.au
October 25, 2013

RICHMOND

IN
Shaun Hampson
From Carlton Age 25 Height 201cm Weight 104kg Position Ruck/forward Games 63
Official AFL Player Ratings rank 394
What he brings Big men aren't easy to find and, while some queried the price the Tigers paid for Hampson, he should slot in and play an effective dual role for the team as a forward line foil for Jack Riewoldt and ruck support for Ivan Maric. Has shown he is capable of crashing packs and taking contested marks, but needs to do it more consistently. A season uninterrupted by injury would help him do that.

OUT
Free agency/traded: Matt White (Port Adelaide), pick 32 (Carlton)
Retired: Shane Tuck

NAB AFL Draft picks: 12, 50, 68, 86

Analysis: A quiet trade period for the Tigers, who are clearly confident their list is on the right track. There are some delistings to come, with Luke McGuane touted to find a new home in Brisbane, and Robin Nahas facing an uncertain future.

The Herald-Sun gave us a B- ...

AFL trade month report card - every club rated

RICHMOND

In: Shaun Hampson

Out: Matt White

Draft picks: 12, 50, 68, 86

Verdict: Put the brakes on after bringing in more than 30 players in three years. Desperately needed to give Ivan Maric support, which comes in the form of Shaun Hampson. Had a look at Giant Dylan Shiel but with nothing to offer and a tight salary cap it never got off the ground. A vanilla exchange period.

Rating: B-

Here's The Age's report card as well ....

How your club fared in the free agency and trade period

RICHMOND

The Tigers paid plenty for Shaun Hampson, who couldn't cement a spot in seven years at Carlton. But the fact that the Tigers have recruited well in the last few years inspires confidence, as does the fact they identified Hampson, went after him and got the deal done quickly and easily. Time will tell whether he's the right man. Pick 12 means they'll be picking from the top group in the draft, a group largely com-prised of mid-fielders, and they won't be back until the third round. They were hoping for a compensation pick for White, who had his best season and whose departure robs them of some pace and depth, but that wasn't forthcoming.
