Debt-free Tigers are roaring

  The Age
    November 19, 2013 - 8:37PM

Back in the finals and now clear of debt, it has been quite a year for AFL club Richmond.

The Tigers announced on Tuesday a net surplus of $3.317 million for the financial year which ended on October 31.

Richmond has posted their ninth consecutive profit and are now out of debt, one year ahead of their schedule.

Richmond's net asset position rises from $19.07 million to $22.38 million.

"This is a very pleasing result and one we have been able to deliver while making significant investments in our football program and our facilities at the ME Bank Centre," Richmond's president Peggy O'Neal said.

The Tigers, who broke a 12-year drought by playing finals football in 2013, ploughed $1.59 million into their football department.

They also spent $2 million resurfacing Punt Road Oval.

O'Neal said the burden of significant debt had been holding the club back.

"Improved business performance driven by our committed members, coteries, supporters and sponsors combined with the wonderful support provided to the Fighting Tiger Fund, means that is no longer the case," O'Neal said.

"The board made a conscious decision that developing the club's financial muscle was a priority if we are to deliver on-field success, and we are working to build a business that is at the forefront of professional sport."

Richmond's 60,321 members provided a record net membership revenue of $6.35 million and merchandise sales grew by 17 per cent, the Tigers said.

Great result and to see the growth in revenue. Still need to increase our membership revenue extensively, don't the pies hawks and bombres all get over 10mill from membership?

Merchandise and membership will grow again, hopefully corporate $$$ grows the most that's what separates the financial giants from the rest in this comp

:huh Arent we as a club striving to become one of the stronger clubs in the competition financially? Simply stating that on current numbers we aren't and will need to keep growing at a faster rate than the rest otherwise we risk becoming an average run of the mill club once again if/when on field we have a downturn.

Think of it this way - 70,000 members and put the cost up by a measly $15.00 is over $1m big ones! Also as the member numbers grow many will move towards reserve seats so there is more money there.
Also this result puts RFC in the top three or four clubs financial results for 2013. Only Hawthorn, Collingwood and maybe West Coast have done better.

True, but increase your membership levels by 5k @ say $200 and there's another $1m big ones as well  ;D

membership costs go up most years (they have for 2014) so a small price increase isn't an issue but big hikes could be

You can demand whatever you want but the truth is no AFL club gives a poo about its members. We are just numbers to them and above all we are just money to them. Beyond that we are nothing to them and the sooner the supporters realise this the better off they will be.
