How many more years until we are ready ?
« on: January 12, 2014, 01:07:29 PM »
IMHO it's another 2-5. I don't think we'll challenge for that top 4 position/premiership until 2017 when our midfielders will really be hitting their prime.

Have to be top 4 by 2015 who is capable of beating any other side. Not just a token top 4.

If we arent considered within the best couple of teams by 2016 and playing Grannys we may end up missing our window. Especially with the New teams developing.

I think in order to get this thread into a second page, it's a question for The Craw to answer
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

28+  Maric. Foley
27+  Knights. Chaplin. Jackson.
25/6+ Morris. Reiwoldt. S Edwards. Hampson. Deledio etc.

While much of the list is 'young' - 18 of the list is twenty five or over currently. No excuses in regards to the recent draft picks. The time to be ready is now. TBH, we should have been already been ready to go, with the latest trade/draft period merely the cherry on top.

Some things that concern me are the selection of the team. Seemingly having favorites (grigg, houli, pettard). Not giving youth a chance. Wallace-like.

I don't believe it's so much a case of being ready but more being man enough to STAND UP!

These boys need to look inside themselves and evolve.

Are they capable of that?

Most on this forum were saying 2-5 years ago that we were 2-5 away from it. This year we should be top 4-5 again with at least two finals wins and then next year into the big one.

usually takes sustained finals appearances before teams take the next step to genuine premiership contenders

It's a bit of a loaded question for me.
Ready for what?... If it's 'ready' to contend, then the answer is now. When you make finals you are always a chance. Anything can happen- injuries, form and luck are three vital ones.

If it's 'ready' to win a premiership then the answer IMO is next year realistically. But just because you are up there doesn't guarantee of anything. Great teams with great coaches in recent years have been ready and come away with nothing. St.Kilda springs to mind.

As long as you give yourself the best chance by being top four, giving yourself a double chance and a home final, anything can happen. Or one great win in a final can give you a home final and maybe a week off, like Freeo last year. After they beat Geelong down there, the doors just opened up for them.

You can be 'ready' but if you don't have a bit of luck on your side it could  be for nothing!
The way footy is played these days anyone with a touch of luck can beat anyone on their day. You just have to put a few of those together in finals time and as I said 'anything can happen'
Think Hawthorn in 08.

Win enough games this year to be top four and we are ready! Simple!

Imo we are miles away from winning a flag.

we are competetive with a lot of sides.
two words, quality and depth. we dont have enough of either.

we are at a stage where we have filled holes and gaps with the appropriate numbers. now we need to upgrade and improve each area with quality and depth.
we also have a lot of  development players who have struggled.

an example of the lack of depth is  assuming a edwards, petterd, banfield and thomas are not best 22 those four are the only players remaining on the list who have played more than 50 games.

while we are some chance of making the 8 so are 14 other teams one bad run with injury and we wont even be talking finals.

i dont get the impatience at the end of 2009 just about every man and his dog would have taken a finals apperance in 5yrs time. well we are travelling 1 yr in front of where we realistically should have been.
we have gone from imo a  perenial cellar dwellar  regular bottom 4,  to a middling team 5th thru 13th that needs plenty of work to become a genuine contender.
last yr we were a middling team yes we finished 5th on the ladder but i reckon the carlton loss gave us a better indicator of where we were at.

we all  complain well most of us complain about the need to drop players from our best 22. players who imo will not get us anywhere.players who let us down regularly in pressure situations and who are limited . we still have too many.
yep atm those players  produce a little more than others do. but we dont need em for their age /experience anymore or their bigger bodies we have addressed much of that. we need to continue to put games into players who are more well rounded without the basic deficiencies.

the reality is though, there has not been anyone who has shown enough to displace em. that in itself should tell everyone where we are at.heavily reliant on 16 - 22 players.

the need to improve is great.this is why i argue on here the need to continue playing kids with potential instead of playing barely up to standard  players.  we still need to get games into younger players with the right attributes to play at the level.
as i said we no longer play total hacks,  but we do have plenty who are very deficient and we must upgrade on them. unfortunately to date there has been no players aged 22 and over who have done enough to displace em. maybe the mature intake this yr can provide that competition.

we have 12 juniors. ellis, conca and vlastuin are already established.  we need 5 of the remaining 9 lennon, mcdonough, mcbean, elton, mcintosh, arnot, ohanlon, williams and darrou to step up and become regulars and push out some of those deficient glass half fulls.  this will take a little time. with only lennon being a first rounder and our history with picks after the first round it could take forever. but imo there is plenty of potential there and a good percentage should make it.

we have 32 players aged 22 or more at the start of the season. its here we have problems still. 16 or more of those 32 have serious questions about longevity.  weather it be age, performances to date or chronic weaknesses in their game. its this lot some of whom have been okay that we need to be looking at and attempting to upgrade on imo.

there we go should get us at least to a third page.

We're ready now.
We were ready to make the finals and secure some much needed experience playing with the big boys on the big stage a few years ago.
We have one of the best midfields in the comp and have had that for several years now.
Now it's time to make these players better and get that flag.

Isn't it funny though that everytime we speak of greatness we all feel the pain of the past thirty years of lots of hope only to have our hearts ripped out. So why should we hold hope. For the love of the Richmond Tigers, that's why.

If any Tiger players read this and all our posts, just remember, it's time to make it real and get serious.

Our window is 2015 -18.   This year is important to see how close to the four we can get. Injuries will affect any team, not just us.  As always, we have to win the close ones.  Look at Norf. Everyone had them pencilled in last year as top 6. Lost many close ones and didn't even make the eight.

To claw:
Unity and teamwork with good team structures can cover list deficiencies as ALL TEAMS have deficiencies!!!!
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

Richmond will win 3 flags in the next 5 or 6 years IMHO. Hardwick will go down in history as a legend. That is all.  :gotigers
