From the AFL website ...

The pre-season games will give the Tigers a chance to evaluate their rookies, with the club able to name two as nominated rookies before the season starts.

Last year, Richmond promoted Ricky Petterd and Orren Stephenson before the season in the same situation.

Rookies Todd Banfield, Anthony Miles and Stephenson have been named to face the Demons, while Ben Darrou, Matt Thomas and Cadeyn Williams have also impressed so far this summer and could get their opportunity to shine against the Magpies.

"It's going to be a needs basis as to who we put up on what we feel we need," Daly said.

"There's good competition there but there's no rush to put them up so the NAB Challenge is a good competition for us to be able to see these guys and how they perform and what best fits the team."

Coach Damien Hardwick told AFL.com.au last month the Tigers viewed its rookies as "injury replacement players" rather than development prospects.

Banfield covers a most immediate need.  Miles and Darrou are the two for long term promotion.

Banfield covers nothing, so far down the small fwd pecking order might as well be dead

Someone to play small forward.  Don't get me wrong, the bloke is a dud that can't kick to save himself but he does create opportunities.  He will be replaced by Lloyd and McDonough before the end of the year but I reckon we need to slot him in upfront until those blokes show something at VFL level.

IMV they shouldn't promote any of them yet, there's really no need

But I think they will promote Stephenson and either Banfield or Thomas

So you're saying that if Miles or Banfield impress and warrant a senior spot they shouldn't be elevated? Great logic

why would you not promote anyone? it costs you nothing yet gives another two options come selection time. If two blokes do enough to warrant promotion you may as well do it.

But what if they don't warrant it, do you promote for the sake of it?

Also, you are locked into keeping them promoted for a fixed period of time and can't bring someone else up for a specific need if it is req'd

Say they decided to promote Banfield and Thomas before round 1. Then one of rucks or key backs goes to down for a number of weeks but not long enough to be put on the LTIL then you are unable to promote say Stephenson or Darrou to cover.

I would just rather wait until the season starts, see how the go in the VFL and more importantly keep a spot in case we need to promote someone to cover a set position down the track or alternatively give someone an opportunity because they've played consistent footy for longer period than 3 weeks.

I thought i did say "if they warrant it."

Isnt there a cut off point to promote rookies to available spots and after that it cant be done until half way through the season or if someone is put on the LTIL?
