Mark Robinson, Mike Sheahan, Gerard Whateley and Jon Ralph debate where Richmond are contenders or pretenders:

VIDEO: http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/jack-riewoldt-urged-to-give-up-media-ban-before-it-derails-richmonds-season/story-fndv8t7m-1226847390281#ooid=owZzIxbDrY0YgeV9wIbOY7CRTsbqlbyL

---------------------------------------------------------------

Ralph - contenders. Only side to beat Hawthorn and by 41 pts without any Kennett curse. Going to be growing pains but two points off top 4 means plenty of upside and they can maintain the rage. Jack Riewoldt is capable of kicking 80 goals. Believe 3-4 sides are above us though.

Robbo - contenders for 4th-7th; pretenders for the premiership. Rates that we last year had the 3rd least score against. Impressive for a young team.

Whateley - If they hold ground in 5th and win a final that will be progression. Massive leap for them last year to reach 5th. Unrealistic to expect top 4. Sides that finish 5th should be able to win at least one final.

Sheahan - believes a team's fortunes depends on its best players not bottom 6. If Cotchin and Martin reach the level they can reach then thinks Richmond will be genuine contenders. We [the media] offer too much slack to Richmond. Hardwick is in his 5th year. They need to win 15 games [the others reminded him we won 15 games already last year]. Mike then says that then is the launch pad and Richmond must win a final.

I agree with Robbo, except if we take advantage of our draw we could make a push for an even higher finish. I remember when they were talking about this at half time of our first NAB game and Sheahan was finding every excuse to be critical, yet when they did the same for Carlton the old todger looked for the smalllest reasons to talk them up.

i think a blind mans seeing eye dog could see theres plenty of sides in contention for 5th thru 8th. obviously we are one of those sides.  we are no chance for a flag and have a lot of building to do still to get there.
the positive is after the decades in the wilderness and the low base hardwick has come from  we continue to track in the right direction.
i still think it very concievable that we will miss finals all together but so could 10 other sides in contention for bottom half of the 8. thing is we could miss and concievably still track in the right direction.

can i ask everyone. what if we have a yr like nm did after making finals the yr before. we could be super competetive in 95% of games but miss finals thru whatever reason.  we could improve across the board like nm did would that be acceptable. i think it would. the evenness of the comp can mean a rollercoaster from yr to yr as far as results go.
it wont be until we are a genuine lay down misere top 4 side that we may be able to get off that roller coaster.

lets look to improve in all things, and if we do and fail so be it. i actually think both nm and essendon were better in yrs they missed finals than the yrs they made it.

come rnd 1 against gcs if we dont play at our best we may well walk away with our tail between our legs thats how even the comps become.
in some ways i think with the way we have gone about the list the last two yrs finals shoul;d be expected but that would be churlish when all other things are considered. we are in a real dog fight make no mistake about it.

I'm sure it was a slip of the tongue and he meant to say Essendon...

I think round 1 will be one of the hardest games we play in the first month. I would be more confident that we beat Carlton than GC up at Metricon.  They're going to be one scary side soon!
