Herald Sun football expert Jon Ralph rates every AFL coach in season 2014 from 1 to 18

JON RALPH rates this season’s AFL’s senior coaches from one to 18.

1. Alastair Clarkson (Hawthorn)

2. Ross Lyon (Fremantle)

3. Mark Thompson (Essendon)

4. Mick Malthouse (Carlton)

5. Paul Roos (Melbourne)

6. Chris Scott (Geelong)

7. John Longmire (Sydney)

8. Ken Hinkley (Port Adelaide)

9. Brendan McCartney (Western Bulldogs)

10. Brenton Sanderson (Adelaide)

11. Damien Hardwick (Richmond)
WIN-LOSS: 44 per cent. 39 wins, 48 losses, two draws, one final.
HIS win-loss record is the second-worst of the non-expansion coaches and he hasn’t won a final. But consider where Richmond has come from under Hardwick. From basket case to future contender, the transformation is immense. When Richmond was 33 points up against Carlton, he was a coaching genius. There is unfinished business for Hardwick, who is following a similar progression to his mentor Clarkson.
Contracted until end of 2016.

12. Brad Scott (North Melbourne)

13. Nathan Buckley (Collingwood)

14. Guy McKenna (Gold Coast)

15. Leon Cameron (GWS Giants)

16. Alan Richardson (St Kilda)

17. Adam Simpson (West Coast)

18. Justin Leppitsch (Brisbane Lions)

I thought it was a reasonable summation.
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

Take the newbies out and he is the 4th worst coach in the AFL. Mick Malthouse 5th? Based on what.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Based on the fact that the man has won flags and his sides more often or not make the finals?

By default?  :lol

What about Roos? Maybe we could dig up Jock McHale so we could have no.1  :shh

  • Against logic there is no armour like ignorance.
The desire to rank things in some sort of order, though possibly entertaining, is in the end a fools errand. So many variables and differences in circumstance that make any comparison nonsensical.

If you end up with what you need at the time you need it then you are in a good position. How it compares to anything else is immaterial.

You might obtain something that is highly ranked but find it is totally unsuited to your need and actually damaging to your cause, where something lesser is more constructive.

We've been there before.

This. Pagan was the messiah until he joined the Blues. Micks first year was ordinary - Jonny Ralph clearly doesn't want to feel the wrath of super sensitive Mick in press conferences this year.
