Terry Wallace, the list manager, takes a look at his former side, Richmond:

AUDIO: https://soundcloud.com/thefootypod/richmond-list-manager?utm_source=soundcloud&utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=twitter

Summary:

* Losing to Carlton was a bitter pill to take but in a strange quirky way the 7th placed finish benefits them with the 2014 draw. Expects us to get off to a strong start in the first 10 rounds. You don't finish with 15 wins by accident and they were only one game off the top 4. It's time for the Tigers to strike.

* Added layers each year to their list via trades and free agency. Got top end youngsters to begin with in Cotchin, Martin and Deledio then added layers. Francis Jackson has nailed the first picks 100% since he got there.

* Line up will have a new look. Hampson in the ruck, Thomas as a tagger/run with player. Added size with Astbury down back and Griffiths up forward. So 4 changes to last year's line-up.

* Back line still developing but the addition of Chaplin and Morris has helped. Rance has gone to another level. Their best 1-1 tall defender; Morris best 1-1 small defender. Use of Martin off half-back has been a success over summer and combined with Houli provides a lot of run and carry. Tigers will be hoping Astbury's body holds up as the third tall. Grimes still to come back and McDonough has played some strong footy over the preseason (doubts he'll play round 1 though).

* Moving Martin to half-back allows Ellis, Conca, Edwards and Vlastuin more game time in the midfield. They can still move Dusty into the midfield as required.

* Can't have Cotchin and Deledio finishing 4th & 5th in B&F. Need the stars to lead the way to finish top 4.

* Grigg and Ellis provide outside run. Need Foley to find his best footy and confidence as well as Jackson back from his hammy.

* Liked Hampson over the preseason and Griffiths as the 2nd ruck. Believes both can hold up the ruck until Maric comes back.

* Up forward need consistency from Riewoldt and Vickery.

* 21 goals from your best small forward (King) isn't enough. Newy has gone forward as well as Cotchin resting there to help that out and boost their goal numbers.

* Has Richmond with 11 wins plus eight 50/50 games. So Plough is tipping 16 wins and a 3rd-5th finish.

* 2014 won't be another false dawn for Richmond.

aaaarrrrgggghhhhh quick cut the wrists. were in for a shocker yr. when has he ever got anything right about our club.

peeing myself at rance being best 1v1 defender. does he even watch games.

hampson failed for 7 yrs in the ruck will transform us.  so will thomas another 7 or 8 yr hack at afl level.

ill give terry one thing hes prepared to put his optimistic balls on the line.

the martin to h/b comment is especially golden. just when has edwards.  and conca  recently played at hb.  . and where does that leave houli surely we dont need two very outside hb in martin and houli.
i dunno im disappointed in myself for even reading the garbarge that comes out of journos mouths yet alone wallaces.

Hasn't the club practically named McDonough for this week? Yet Tezza says he probably won't play haha

Wallet was always a good analyst and list manager. He was just what the Dogs needed with their mature list that just need restructuring and re-motivating. The problem he had when he came to Richmond though is that he couldn't teach. He just didn't know how to develop young players and didn't have the fund from the club to bring in staff that could.

When he speaks about the club and its direction I, unlike some, actual respect his opinion because I think he knows what he's talking about.

As long as he is discussing our team, like David King, as a member of the media rather than as a member of our staff, I'm OK.  :shh :lol

Funny - Wallace still seems to have a soft spot for the Tigers. Whether its some sort of delusion that he has had an influence somehow in our current success or just because he still knows some of the current players and staff. Has even said that he still follows the side the most out of all the sides in the comp. :-\

Spud on the other hand appears to have a genuine loathing for the club and rarely has a kind word to say about the place or side. :wallywink

Wallace had no support, footy department was non existant, whatever you think of the bloke, he was on a hiding to nothing, any coach was prior to us building the right way under B.Gale. I don't hold him solely responsible

He had one thing - a large bank account courtesy of the RFC.

And he had one other thing -  Richard Tambling!!!
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

Isnt it ultimately up to the employer to decide how much they want to pay an employee?  We have 30 years of crap and gone through a dozen coaches but it was all the coaches fault.. Even if Wallace took half his 600k per year wage and we put it towards a couple of assistant we would have still been under resourced. When the GM and head coach are required to also be recruiters I choose not to blame them for everything, pretty obvious the club as a whole wasn't in a good place.

He doesn't say that Edwards or Conca have recently played at half back.

But I would have thought that moving Martin to half back means he isn't in the midfield, therefore freeing up a spot there for the others to rotate etc.

Just sayin

Wallace is clearly correct. Do you even watch games ?
Can I suggest you take a look at ( for eg ) Richmond vs Hawthorn last year. One of the best man on man performances you'll see by Rance against Buddy Franklin. He slaughtered him.
You seriously have NFI dude !

Plough was on SEN this arvo reiterating what he said on Sportsday. He sees us being 8-2 after our first 10 games.

His Final Eight prediction is:
Freo
Hawks
Swans
Richmond
Geelong
North
Coll'wood
Eagles.
