Reprimands for Tiger pair
richmondfc.com.au  April 7, 2014 5:40 PM

Richmond star forward Jack Riewoldt and rugged midfielder Matt Thomas are free to play in this Friday night’s blockbuster clash against Collingwood following the AFL’s Round 3 Match Review Panel findings.

Both were cited for incidents stemming from last Saturday’s loss to the Western Bulldogs, however both can accept reprimands which allow them to take their place in the Tigers’ team for Round 4.

The MRP statement:

Jack Riewoldt, Richmond, has been charged with a level one tripping offence (80 demerit points, reprimand) for tripping Tom Liberatore, Western Bulldogs, during the third quarter of the round three match between Richmond and the Western Bulldogs, played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday April 5, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Western Bulldogs Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a level one offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has no good or bad record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record.

Well this is the best thing that came out of the game IMO.

How can it be high contact? By the time he hit the ground Thomas had his hands around Griffen's body. Sure his head may have hit the ground but the contact with Thomas definitely wasn't high.

I know but the charge said high contact with Thomas, not the ground.

You've answered your own question

Having Griffen's arms pinned meant that he (Griffen) had no way to protect his head, therefore his head hit the ground and that is deemed high contact.

Consider it the "Trengove" rule, sling tackles where there is no protection for the head of the player being slung is deemed high contact. This is actually one thing the incredibly inconsistent MRP have actually been relatively consistent on

IMHO Thomas is very lucky to only get week reduced to a reprimand

Good for you. You're our resident expert. Raise a glass.
Now you can add it to your CV which already has Carlton beating us last year in the EF.
